Chapter 61 - Building an Army
Ray opened the envelope at dawn.He sat alone at the edge of the camp near the northern wall, back against the timber, the camp still quiet around him, and read what Scott Davies had left behind. It wasn't long.Davies wrote the way he apparently did everything else. It was direct and without wasting time. He had known about Project X for fourteen months before the outbreak. A former government contact had brought him partial documentation, enough to understand what was being built and roughly when it would be deployed. He had taken the information to three separate authorities and been dismissed by all of them.So he built the camp instead. He had tried to find Ray specifically after hearing from the same contact that a supermarket worker in the city had been identified as a genetic match for the programme's primary procedure. He hadn't reached Ray in time. The last line of the letter read: *Whatever they built into you was always yours don't let them take it back.*Ray folded t
Chapter 62 - Real Weapons
Day three of training and Ray was already done with the basics. He walked the central clearing at dawn and watched the groups from the previous day picking up where they had stopped.Brandt ran the firearms group through positioning drills.Torres moved between the archers with quiet corrections, Gaines leading the combat group through the fall techniques Ray had taught him with the enthusiasm of someone who had discovered something useful and couldn't stop using it.They were better than yesterday. They weren't good enough yet.Ray went to find Reyes.******"I need the weapons distributed," he said. "All of them."Reyes looked up from the supply tally she had been working through. "We agreed to hold them in the……""That was before," Ray said. "Zed knows this general area. He doesn't have the exact location yet but he has enough. When his people find this camp I need everyone who can hold a weapon to already be holding one. A locked container helps nobody."Reyes put down her pen. "
Chapter 63 - Harlan
Ray met him Harlan at the north gate at dusk.Harlan was exactly what Reyes had described. Grey-haired, military bearing, standing with the particular stillness of someone trained to wait without showing impatience. He wore the clothes of a survivor, torn at the knee, jacket patched at the elbow, boots worn down at the heel in a way that took time to produce. A pack on his back that looked like it had been through everything the last few weeks could throw at it.He looked like every other person who had walked through that gate with nothing left but the will to keep moving.Ray looked at him for a long moment."You've been waiting three days," Ray said."I've been waiting longer than that," Harlan said. "Three days is just how long it took you to show up."His voice was arranged. It was calm in the way of someone who had been calm in difficult situations enough times that it had become the default setting rather than an effort.Ray stepped aside and let him through the gate.******
Chapter 64 - Engineered Zombies
Ray was unable to sleep that night. He lay in the tent allocated to him at the camp's eastern edge and stared at the canvas ceiling and thought about Harlan's right hand inside his jacket, holding something still at an angle that had nothing to do with keeping warm.He thought about the three days Harlan had spent at the camp's northern edge before Ray arrived. Three days of watching the gate, the walls, the watchtower positions. Three days of patient waiting that Ray had read as the behaviour of a cautious survivor and was now reading differently. He got up before dawn and went to find Reyes.*******She was already in the central tent with the supply tally, the same way she had been every morning Ray had been in the camp. He pulled the tent flap closed behind him and sat across from her and kept his voice low."About Harlan," he said.Reyes looked up."Last night after the meeting, he was standing at the northern wall facing the treeline” Ray said. His right hand was inside his
Chapter 65 - The Battle of The Camp
"Positions!" Ray's voice went very through the chaos. "Everyone on the walls now!"The camp entered into motion.Brandt had his firearms group moving before Ray finished the sentence, splitting them across the four walls the way they had planned. Two rifles per section, the shotguns positioned at the two main gates where anything that got through would have to funnel. The compound bows went to the elevated platform along the eastern wall where Torres had spent three days training her people to shoot from height. It wasn't perfect. It was the best they got.Ray grabbed Reyes by the arm as she moved past him. "Get everyone who isn't fighting into the supply building. Reinforce the door from inside. Don't open it for anything except my voice."Reyes didn't waste time receiving it. She was already turning, already moving, already pulling people by name toward the building with the focused urgency of someone who had prepared for exactly this even while hoping it wouldn't come.Ray turne
Chapter 66 - Warning
The second helicopter went down twenty minutes after the first. It was Ken doing.Nobody planned it and nobody told him to. He was on the eastern wall with the shotgun running low on shells when he saw the helicopter drift close enough on its sweep and he pulled the last two shells from his vest, loaded, waited for the angle, and fired both barrels at the tail rotor in one breath. The helicopter spinned.BOOOMMMM!!It came down on the northern treeline in a ball of noise and fire and the impact shook the ground hard enough that three people on the eastern wall lost their footing. Now two was down and one was left. The remaining helicopter pulled back fast, climbing higher, out of range of anything the camp had left, and without the two relay points the zombies below lost half of their direction in under a minute. The coordinated assault broke apart the way it had after Zoe took the first one down, zombies losing their shared purpose and drifting, the organised mass falling into chao
Chapter 67 - Taking The War To The City
Ray didn't wait.He went straight from the empty bedroll to Saul and found him already awake at the camp's northern edge.He was sitting on an upturned crate with his eyes closed and his head tilted in the specific way that meant he was listening to something nobody else could hear."Saul," Ray said.Saul held up one finger without opening his eyes.Ray waited.Thirty seconds passed.Saul opened his eyes and looked at Ray with an expression that said he already knew something was wrong and had been working out what it was before Ray arrived."North," Saul said. "Last night. Around two in the morning while the repair teams were working the south wall." He paused. "I heard a chopper. Single rotor, running low and quiet, the kind of flight that doesn't want to be tracked. It came in from the north and it left the same way." He looked at the empty bedroll across the camp. "It was on the ground for less than three minutes."Ray looked north."He called it in during the fight," Ray said. "W
Chapter 68 - Strike
They moved out at first light.Thirty people moved in single file through the forest, without talking or making unnecessary sound. Ray was at the front with Saul one step behind him, Luiz and Diaz covering the flanks, Torres and two archers at the rear watching the back trail.Everyone was carrying something.Rifles, bows and sharp bladed tools. Body armor was on the front twelve. Bag packs with ammunition and medical supplies were distributed across the unit so that losing one person didn't mean losing all of one thing. Charlie had organized the load-out the previous night with the focus of someone who had spent his whole life thinking about inventory without knowing it would one day matter this much.Ray had pulled extra ammunition from his inventory before leaving and distributed it until everyone was carrying double what they had trained with. The forest was quiet for the first one hour. Then Saul touched Ray's arm.Ray stopped immediately. The signal went back down the line a
Chapter 69 - Twenty Cities
They found a chopper parked at an helipad on a closed chamber at the roof top of the facility.Ray was the one to notice it at first and no one cared to approach it, because none of them could fly a chopper. But Ray flew the chopper. He hadn't told anyone he knew how until he climbed into the pilot seat and started the engine and the unit stood outside the facility entrance looking at each other with expressions that asked the same question nobody said out loud."Get in," Ray said through the open door. They got in.The facility had two helicopters in a concealed bay two levels below the lab. Zed had taken one when he left. Ray took the other. It wasn't the largest aircraft he'd ever seen but it carried twelve people and he loaded it with the most critical members of the unit and left Brandt to lead the rest back through the forest on foot with a radio pulled from the facility's communication room. The flight back to camp took eighteen minutes. The walk had taken most of a day.****
Chapter 70 - Departure
The decision on who was going took up to ten minutes between the group.Ray made the call the same way he made every call, based on what the mission needed rather than what people wanted, and the two things didn't always match."New York needs people who can pass as civilians," Ray said. He was standing with Reyes in the central tent, the map spread between them again, the route north marked in three stages. “They don't need fighters or a squad. They need people who can walk into an actual city and not drawing attention before we find what we're looking for."Reyes nodded. "People like who?""Me," Ray said. "Ada, Zoe, Priya, Charlie and Saul."Reyes looked at the list. "What about Ken?""Ken looks like what he is," Ray said. "A man built for combat and the same for Gaines and Brandt. New York is still running normally. People notice things in a normal city that they wouldn't notice out here." He paused. "Charlie can disappear into any crowd on the planet. Priya walks into a city a
