Edmund arrived first. He came through the warehouse door ahead of Marcus with his coat on and his phone in his hand and the particular forward movement of a man who had been told something significant and had spent the drive over organizing his response to it. He came in and stopped. He looked at the box on the workbench. He looked at it the way you look at something when you already knew what it was before anyone told you. The recognition was in his face, and then it was controlled, and then it was in his face again, and he let it stay there this time.He crossed the room slowly. He stood in front of the box and looked at Margaret's handwriting on the top, and did not touch it for a moment.Marcus came in behind him and stood near the door.Kai told Edmund about Daniel. Where he had found the box. How long had he been sitting on it? The call he had been waiting to make. What he had said at the door before he left.Edmund listened with his eyes on the box. When Kai finished, Edmund wa

Eight o'clock Saturday morning. The city was quieter than it would have been on a weekday. Saturday morning quiet. The particular reduced pace of a city that had given itself permission to start slowly. Traffic lighter. Pavements less dense. The coffee shops full and the office buildings not.Reyes's office was in a civic building on the south side that did not have the architectural ambition of the newer government buildings further north. It was functional and plain and it had been doing its job for thirty years without asking to be noticed and that suited the man who worked in it.Marcus was already in the waiting area when they arrived. He had been there since seven. He stood when Kai and his mother and Edmund came through the entrance and he looked at Kai's mother the way he looked at her now, with the specific directness of someone who had decided that pretending the past two days had not happened was not something he was going to do anymore. She touched his arm once as she pass

Marcus drove them. His mother sat in the back with her hands in her lap and looked out the window, and Kai sat beside her and said nothing. There was nothing to say that was more useful than the silence, and he had learned a long time ago to know the difference. She watched the city. Not casually. Not the way you watched scenery from a car window when you had nothing else to think about. She watched it the way you watched something you had been away from long enough that it had become both familiar and strange at the same time. The streets she had walked a thousand times. The buildings she had known by sight before she had known them by name. A park they passed where she had eaten lunch alone on summer Fridays when the Mercer East office got too close, and she needed to think without walls around her.Eleven years.Kai watched her eyes moving across the city and understood what she was doing. Not looking at it. Taking it back. Street by street and building by building and park and cor

The week that followed was not dramatic. That was the thing about endings that nobody told you. They did not look like endings from the inside. They looked like paperwork and phone calls and meetings that ran long and decisions that needed to be made before other decisions could be made. They looked like Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings and the specific administrative texture of things being formally concluded.Reyes's investigation moved forward with the particular momentum of something that had been properly built and was now simply running. Han's legal team filed three procedural challenges in the first forty-eight hours. All three were denied by Wednesday morning. The intercepted letter was the anchor. Everything else in the case was strong, but the letter was the thing that could not be argued around because there was no argument available for it. A letter addressed to a lead arbitrator during active proceedings that had been removed before delivery. The chain of custody

She called on a Tuesday. Not a text. Not a message through a lawyer or a mutual contact or any of the indirect routes that people used when they were uncertain about whether the direct route was available to them. She called the number Marcus had given Edmund, who had given it to Kai, with the specific neutrality of a man passing information without attaching an opinion to it.Kai looked at the name on the screen. He let it ring twice. Then he picked up."Kai," she said. Her voice was the same. He had not been expecting it to be different, and it was not different. The same voice that had said things across a dinner table for three years and had said nothing when it mattered and had signed eleven pages in her small, careful handwriting and called him once from a pavement in front of a store and gotten no answer."Lena," he said.A brief silence."I would like to see you," she said. "If that is something you would be willing to do."He looked at the city through his office window. He t
