Chapter 61- Cleaving the Cannon
‘Wait... does he need us to be connected to our shadows before he can attack us?’The realisation flashed through the wind elementalist’s mind, and he quickly turned toward the remaining two gangsters, the earth and fire elementalists who were still combining their powers through the enormous earth cannon. At almost the exact same moment, the two of them unleashed another gigantic molten rock projectile straight toward Calvin. The wind elementalist immediately opened his mouth, intending to warn his companions about the weakness he'd just discovered, but Calvin wasn't about to let him warn them that easily.Calvin condensed a dense sphere of darkness elemental energy within his palm before spreading his fingers apart, rapidly expanding it into a massive shield.Instead of blocking the incoming molten projectile head-on, Calvin angled the shield and redirected the attack toward the wind elementalist, forcing the man to abandon his warning and immedi
Chapter 62- A Brighter Flame, A Darker Shadow
Seeing Calvin charging toward him, the earth elementalist hurriedly waved his hand, intending to unleash another barrage of earthen spears. Before he could complete the motion, however, a tendril of darkness burst out from his shadow and wrapped tightly around his arm, stopping the movement halfway and delaying the attack just long enough for Calvin to completely close the distance. The man immediately swung his other hand forward, raising a thick earthen barrier to intercept Calvin's descending slash, but Calvin's darkness blade split straight through the barrier before tearing into the man's arm.The instant the blade made contact with his body, Calvin immediately reformed the weapon, sending darkness elemental energy crawling up the earth elementalist's arm before it raced toward his neck and condensed into a thick rope around his throat.Calvin landed on the ground without wasting a single movement before grabbing the darkness rope with both hands and
Chapter 63- Three Immediate Issues
Calvin had three immediate issues that needed to be resolved as soon as possible. The first was the fact that he was driving the hotel’s tailored car down the main street without a license.Of course, simply looking young wasn’t enough to get him stopped by police officers at traffic junctions. However, driving through the streets in a car with a cracked driver’s side window would certainly attract a fair amount of attention, increasing the chances of him being stopped. To deal with that, Calvin used his darkness element to cover the broken window, making it appear as though all the windows were tinted, when in reality, only the back windows actually were.It cost elemental energy to constantly maintain that veil of darkness at just the right opacity to resemble tinted glass while also concealing the cracks from view, but it was necessary if he wanted to avoid drawing attention.Calvin also took advantage of the opportunity to deal with the second
Chapter 64- Shadow Efficiency
Fortunately, although the car drew a few glances from people who noticed the broken window, they weren't stopped by the police on the way back. After returning to the hotel, Calvin left the task of reporting the incident to the chauffeur and headed back up to his room. The moment he closed the door behind himself, he flopped down onto the couch, heaving an exhausted sigh before removing his cross bag and tossing it onto the floor.“That was a pain to deal with.”Calvin clicked his tongue in faint annoyance as he recalled the completely unnecessary fight he’d been forced into because of Jim.“Just seven people, and I’m already exhausted afterwards. Really, I’m too weak right now.”His elemental energy reserves were currently below 25%, and that was after he’d already recovered a fair amount since the fight had ended.Considering that he’d fought multiple D-Rank elementalists and one
Chapter 65- Authority Bought with Gold
The next morning, Calvin found himself seated inside a café in the same district as his hotel, sitting opposite a brown-eyed, chocolate-skinned woman who was all smiles as she looked through the menu.Calvin had been woken up by a call from Shelia, who'd asked him to change their meal plans from lunch to breakfast because she had some business to take care of by lunchtime. She'd even suggested this café, which was within walking distance of his hotel, and with a resigned sigh, Calvin had taken a quick shower before heading over.Besides, there was something he wanted to ask her anyway. While he considered how best to phrase his request, Shelia pressed the bell to call over a waiter, and when the uniformed staff member arrived, she pointed at the menu in her hand.“I'll have items number 3 and 6,” Shelia said. She then looked over at Calvin, who spoke without looking up from his phone.“Number 1 and 6.&r
Chapter 66- Returns with Interest
"You say you're a big shot, but there's a hint of unhappiness in your tone," Calvin said. This was the first change in her tone that he'd decided to comment on after noticing it, and Shelia paused for a moment in silence before replying."True. I mean, I am a big shot in this part of the country, but in the wider world out there, A-rank elementalists like me are a dime a dozen."As much as Calvin would've liked to refute her, if only to keep her in a better mood, he knew that simply wasn't the case. This part of the country had a relatively small elementalist population, making it much harder for someone to come across elementalists here. In other places, however, such as the capital city, Aegall, a person had a much greater chance of running into an elementalist while simply walking through the streets.Naturally, with a much larger elementalist population, the number of higher-ranked elementalists was also significantly greater. It was bec
Chapter 67- The Corrupted Rift
Scientists, astronomers, and astrophysicists had once believed this dark energy to be a mysterious repulsive force that permeated the entire universe and was responsible for only the universe's accelerating expansion. However, that had been centuries ago, before the discovery of rift spaces. It was later discovered that whenever flaws appeared in a rift's connection to the world's space-time, dark energy from outer space could seep into the rift, where it mixed with the elemental energy within. That mixture would mutate the entire rift, turning it into what was known as a corrupted rift. The interior of the corrupted rift Calvin had entered wasn't fundamentally different from that of a normal rift. In other words, it was simply another space that resembled the normal world, except with a much higher concentration of elemental energy.Within this particular rift, the elemental attribute with the highest concentration was darkness, which wasn't surpr
Chapter 68- Accelerating the Storm
Even the bats that had been consumed by flames regenerated in exactly the same manner, their burned flesh restored by the dark energy before they once again took to the skies.Calvin's eyes narrowed at the sight, and his thoughts immediately went to the three bats he'd killed only minutes earlier.‘Those bats didn't get back up after I killed them.’He then remembered how the storm had suddenly intensified the instant those three bats died, followed almost immediately by the torrential rain.Calvin silently watched the two bikers as they rode off into the distance, and from their actions and reactions, he arrived at a conclusion.“These men don't seem surprised that the bats aren't dying from their attacks,” he muttered. “Then there's also the fact that the storm started the moment those bats were killed by my hand.”A possibility immediately came to Calvin's mind, and he pressed two fingers against his te
Chapter 69- The Nascent Beast Lord
The lightning elementalist slowly turned toward Calvin, and even with the mask covering their face, Calvin could tell their eyes had definitely widened in shock."So," Calvin said, "explain exactly what's been happening inside this rift. What are these bats, and why do they keep reviving?""I should be asking you that," the elementalist shot back immediately. "How the hell did you kill it permanently?! What did you do to it? Is it your element? Wait... what element are you? That spike of... wait... darkness?"The lightning elementalist fired one question after another, their tone full of disbelief.Calvin stepped forward, reached out, and grabbed the person by the front of their clothes, pulling them closer."Answer my questions already," he demanded. "What the hell are these bats, and where did they come from?""We don't know either. I don't know. Nobody does," the lightning elementalist replied, pushing Calvin's arm away from their shirt.<
Chapter 70- Severing the Supply
As Calvin moved through the city, the other elementalists also noticed that the bats had begun flying back toward the centre. The two elementalists on the bikes whom Calvin had encountered earlier frowned at the sight."That's not good," one of them said. "These bats suddenly stopped attacking. The only explanation is that whatever's inside that cocoon we found a few days ago is calling them back.""Could that thing be accelerating its emergence?" the wind elementalist asked. The two of them, both C-rank elementalists, together with the lightning elementalist and the wounded researcher Calvin had spoken with earlier, were actually members of the same team.A few days earlier, they had attempted to investigate the centre of the storm and had discovered the cocoon hidden within it. However, they had been intercepted by the bats and had even lost one of their comrades because of how many bats had attacked them."Now's not the time. We have to f
