Chapter 11
Alex stared at the dark screen of his phone long after the call ended. The silence felt heavier than it should have.Daniel's voice still echoed inside his head. You're running out of time. Not a threat, not a warning, not one of the cryptic riddles Daniel seemed to enjoy leaving behind, but this had sounded different, it was urgent and almost desperate.Alex slowly lowered the phone and across the operation room, Brooks immediately noticed the change in his expression."What happened?"Alex looked up."It was Daniel."The room fell silent then Ramirez stopped typing and Brooks straightened in her chair."What did he say?"Alex hesitated. The words somehow sounded worse when spoken aloud."He said I'm running out of time."Nobody spoke for several seconds. Finally Ramirez broke the silence. "Running out of time for what?"Alex rubbed his jaw. "I don't know."But that wasn't entirely true and something deep inside him already knew.Whatever Daniel had discovered five years ago.Whatever
Chapter 12
Thunder rolled across Ravenswood as Alex stepped out of the station.Rain hammered the streets. The city seemed darker than usual, as if it somehow sensed what was coming.Daniel's words replayed endlessly inside his head.Someone is rebuilding the network. Not someone rebuilt it, not someone tried but someone was rebuilding it right now, which meant every second mattered. Alex slid into his car and started the engine then Brooks immediately opened the passenger door before he could leave."You're not doing this alone."Alex didn't argue cause at this point, he was too tired, too worried and too aware that Daniel's warning had changed everything. Brooks settled into her seat… "So where are we starting?"Alex pulled away from the station."The survivors."An hour later they sat inside a conference room reviewing every known connection to Eclipse. Victims covered one side of the board and survivors covered on the other side. Alex stared at the second list.Mina Lee. Captain Eleanor Voss

The photograph trembled slightly in Alex's hand, not because he was afraid but because he was angry. The old image had been taken six years ago during a department charity event. Most people would have overlooked it as Alex almost had, but now he couldn't stop staring. Daniel stood at the center of the photo, grinning as if the future still made sense. Around him were officers, detectives, city officials, and civilian consultants. One face stood near the edge, almost hidden, almost forgotten, yet somehow connected to everything.Brooks entered the office carrying a folder."You're still here?"Alex didn't answer, he just handed her the photograph and Brooks studied it. At first she looked confused, then she noticed."Oh."Alex nodded."Exactly."The face belonged to Richard Bell.Former city councilman, Eclipse survivor, and one of the last living people connected to Victor Hale.Brooks frowned."You think he's rebuilding the network?""I don't know."Alex sat heavily in his chair."B
Chapter 14
Alex didn't sleep. The photograph remained on his desk long after midnight. Daniel, and Elara standing together alive. It's was recent, not six years ago, not before the harbor fire, but recent. And Alex had examined the image at least twenty times, searching for signs of manipulation. Anything at all, whether it's a shadow out of place, an altered timestamp, or a distorted background but there was nothing like that. The photograph appeared genuine which made it worse, because if it was real, then one question refused to leave his mind, Why hadn't Elara told him? The answer could be simple or devastating, but neither possibility sat well with him.By morning, Ravenswood was waking beneath a blanket of fog.Alex arrived at the station early, too early. But Ramirez was already there, surrounded by empty coffee cups and glowing monitors."Please tell me you slept."Ramirez laughed."You first."Alex tossed the photograph onto the desk and Ramirez studied it. His expression immediately ch

The visitor log sat on Alex's desk long after everyone else had gone home. One entry, one date, one name, Daniel Cross and even seven months ago.Alex stared at it again then again as if the answer might suddenly appear between the lines but it never did. The only thing becoming clearer was that Daniel hadn't vanished completely. He'd been moving through Ravenswood. Meeting people, leaving clues, watching, and somehow Alex had never seen it.A soft knock interrupted his thoughts and Brooks entered carrying two cups of coffee."You've been staring at that thing for an hour."Alex accepted the coffee."I think Daniel wanted us to find this."Brooks pulled out a chair."Then why hide?""That's the question."She glanced at the visitor log."The bigger question is who he met there."Alex nodded.Because he was already thinking the same thing and there was only one way to find out. Later that day they went to the Blackout Bar, and it looked exactly as it had the last time they visited. Mus

The knock came again but slower this time and measured. As if the person outside already knew they were being watched.Alex didn’t move neither did Elara. The apartment had never felt this small before. The silence between them stretched, fragile and tight, like it could snap at any second. Then the voice came again."Elara."No emotion, no urgency, just recognition.Alex slowly shifted his position, moving slightly to the side of the doorframe. Hand near his weapon, eyes locked on Elara. She wasn’t looking at him anymore. She was staring at the door like it held something she had been trying to avoid for a very long time."Don’t open it," Alex said quietly.Elara didn’t answer.Another knock. This one softer. Almost patient. Then a pause and finally"I don’t have much time."That sentence changed everything because it didn’t sound like a threat, it sounded like truth.Elara closed her eyes for a brief second, she looked like someone carrying too much weight for too long. Then she mo

The room stayed silent long after the recording ended. Alex could still hear Daniel's voice echoing in his head. “Phase Two is active.”And then Elara's words.“Daniel didn't start Phase Two. He's trying to stop it”.Something about that statement bothered him. Not because it sounded impossible, because it sounded incomplete. Like she'd carefully chosen what not to say. Alex looked at her. "Tell me everything."Elara's eyes dropped to the recorder still resting in her hands. For a moment she looked exhausted not physically. Emotionally like someone who'd carried a secret for too many years. "Alex" "No more half-truths." His voice came out sharper than he meant it to. But he was tired. Tired of riddles, tired of dead ends, tired of chasing ghosts. "You knew Daniel was alive." There was silence.&
Chapter 18
The drive back to the station was silent. Alex kept one hand tight around the steering wheel, the other holding the photograph of Mina. He couldn't shake the feeling that he'd arrived only minutes too late.Daniel had always been one step ahead, now he is two.Brooks met him outside the operations room. "You found her?"Alex handed her the photograph. She studied it, her face hardening. "They took her.""They wanted me to know."Ramirez hurried over. "I've already sent patrol units to every road leading out of the city."Alex shook his head. "They won't use the roads."Ramirez frowned. "What makes you so sure?"Alex looked toward the evidence board. "Because Daniel knows how we think."The room fell quiet, cause everyone knew he was right.Hours later, the station buzzed with activity. Officers searched abandoned warehouses, traffic cameras were reviewed, border alerts went out but they caught nothing. It was as if Mina had vanished into thin air.Alex stared at the city map. Every lo

The monitors went dark. Only the red countdown remained.23:58:41..The numbers ticked down in complete silence. No one spoke, no one moved.Alex's mind raced. Daniel had forced him into an impossible decision. Save Mina. Or stop Phase Two.Brooks broke the silence first. "We're not choosing."Alex looked at her. "We'll find a way to do both."Ramirez didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked to the central computer console. "There may be another option."Alex joined him. The system was old but still running. Most of the files were encrypted except one, a folder labeled, PROJECT HELIX.Alex opened it and it was filled with dozens of personnel files, psychological evaluations, behavioral profiles, and recruitment records. Each belonged to someone with influence like judges, police officers, journalists, politicians, and bankers.Brooks frowned. "This isn't a hit list."Ramirez shook his head slowly, looking horrified. "No. It's a selection list.""For what?""Recruitment."The room

"Dad..."The word escaped Alex before he could stop it. His grip on the gun loosened for the briefest second. The hooded man didn't move. He simply stood beneath the dim warehouse light, watching Alex with calm, unreadable eyes. Then he smiled a tired smile."You're seeing someone else, Detective."Alex blinked. His heartbeat slowly began to settle. The man stepped fully into the light. The resemblance was undeniable, same height, same broad shoulders, even the same gray streaks in his hair. But it wasn't Samuel Mercer. The jawline was different. The eyes weren't the same and the scar running across his left cheek had never belonged to Alex's father.Alex tightened his grip on the pistol again. "Who are you?""My name is Thomas Grayson." The name meant nothing to Alex. "I worked with your father for nearly fifteen years."Alex's expression hardened. "You expect me to believe that?""I don't expect you to believe anything."Thomas reached slowly into his coat. Alex raised his weapon in
