THE FIRST PRISON
The sound of a heartbeat echoed through the valley.Thump.It was deep. Shook the ground beneath Arias feet. The golden water in the First Spring rippled violently. An ancient serpent wrapped its coils around the Spring forming a barrier between the water and a cracked black pillar. Its amber eyes stayed fixed on the growing crack.Another heartbeat.Thump.The crack spread higher.Golden light leaked from one side.Black mist seeped from the other. Two forces pushed against each other inside the pillar.Aria raised the Keepers Staff. She asked, "What is inside?"The serpent replied without looking. "A promise."Aria frowned. "A promise?"The serpent said, "One that should never have been broken."The words hung heavily over the valley. The River whispered softly behind her."Listen, " she said.Aria closed her eyes.In the heartbeat she heard voices. They were an old man and a woman. They spoke calmly. Sorrow weighed every word."If we seal it...""Someone must stay to guard it.""Th
THE CHOICE OF THE KEEPER
The valley was quiet. The river had stopped flowing. The wind wasn't blowing through the trees.Even the sound inside the First Prison had stopped.Everything was waiting for Aria. She looked down at the three things in her hands. There was a brass key that had been used by Keepers before her.The Keepers Staff was glowing with a silver light. The silver seed was safe in Lyra's pouch. The serpent was watching her. It wasn't saying anything. It wasn't going to try to influence her choice. The River wasn't going to tryThe prisoner inside the cracked pillar was still watching her.He seemed old.Aria closed her eyes. Thought about everything she had learned.Elias had told her that love is a choice.Lyra had said that just because something is meant to happen it doesn't mean you don't have a choice.Aster had taught her that the truth takes time.Orion had shown her that good intentions can be bad.Rowan had taught her that trust is stronger than fear.Liam had told her to never give up
THE FIRST PRISONER
The stone shell kept falling apart. It did not blow up.It just broke into pieces like it had done what it was meant to do.Golden light came out of the pillar. The heartbeat that had shaken the valley a while ago became slow and steady.Thump.Thump.The old serpent put its head on the ground. Not because it was scary.Because it was showing respect.Aria noticed this away."You know him, " she said. The serpent answered softly, "I remember him."The River started shining around the First Spring. The water became still. There was not a ripple on the surface. The valley itself seemed to be bowing down. The last pieces of stone floated away.A man stepped forward. He was wearing white robes with golden threads on the edges. He did not have a crown or armor or a weapon. His hair, which was once black now had silver streaks. Fell to his shoulders. His face did not look young or old.It looked timeless. His eyes were very special. One was silver. The other was amber. He looked at the serp
THE WATCHER BEYOND THE SKY
The eye did not blink. It was huge, bigger than the moon you see in the First Spring. Its iris shone with colors I couldn't name. Silver, gold, deep blue and shades that seemed to exist beyond what I could see.. It didn't seem angry. It just seemed aware of everything. It was looking at me. No, it was seeing right through me. I felt every memory I've ever had rise to the surface of my mind. I remembered Liam's laughter, Elias's hug, Lyra's smile and Rowan's faith in me. The moments I wished I could forget. The Keepers Staff vibrated in my hand. The brass key grew warm. The silver seed pulsed against my chest. Together they shielded me from the Watchers gaze. Rowan stepped in front of me instinctively."What is that?" I asked.Cael answered without taking his eyes off the sky. "The Watcher.""The witness, " he added."The memory, " he said. The title alone sent a chill through me. "The oldest... Memory?" Cael nodded."Before kingdoms. Before rivers. Before the First Spring. It watched.
THE CHILDREN OF HOPE
Aria held a leaf in her hand.It was really light. When she touched it she saw a lot of things. There were seven lights all over the place. They were in the mountains and the forests and the deserts and the oceans and the cities. Each light was like a heartbeat. Each one felt alive.A voice spoke to her again. It was gentle and old.It said "the roots cannot stand if every branch is lost".Then the vision went away.Aria looked at the leaf in her hand. She asked "what are the children?"Cael came to stand next to a silver tree that had just grown. He touched one of its branches. He said "they are not children like you think"."They are the descendants of the First Hope"."They are the seeds".Aria looked confused."Seeds?" she asked.Cael said "yes".He told her "when the Tree of Memory first bloomed it made seven living seeds"."Each seed had something that helped memories stay whole".The River started to shine around the valley. It spoke in a voice. It said "compassion".A silver l
THE RACE BEGINS
The Shadow lowered Adrian's hand. Its smile never reached his eyes. The Shadow said "You cannot protect them all."The words lingered over the valley.Behind the Shadow the army of Forgotten remained still. They no longer seemed like soldiers. They looked like people waiting for an ending.Aria glanced at the Tree of Memory. The Tree of Memory had silver leaves that trembled in the wind. One branch glowed brightly. The branch of Compassion glowed brightly. The other six branches remained dormant. If the Shadow reached the remaining Children of Hope first the Tree of Memory would never fully bloom. The River whispered urgently "Time grows thin."Cael stepped beside Aria.Cael said "You must leave."Aria looked at Cael.Aria asked "What about the Spring?"Cael said "The serpent and I will guard it."The ancient serpent inclined its head. The serpent said "As we always have."Aria hesitated.Aria asked "What if the Shadow attacks?"The serpent's amber eyes softened. The serpent said "Tha
THREE ROADS, ONE KEEPER
Aria stood where three paths met.The paths stretched out before her.One path led to snow-covered mountains.Another path led to a living emerald forest. The third path led to a crimson desert. Each road had a glow. The Keepers Staff had three pulses, one for each path. The pulses were equal and no stronger than the others.Rowan studied the staff."It isn't a choice, " he said."No, " Aria replied. She slowly put the staff down."It's asking me to, " she said. The River whispered beneath the silver road."Every choice leaves another path untaken " it said.Aria frowned."I can't be in three places, " she said."No Keeper ever could " Rowan replied. They stood in silence for a moment.Behind them a fractured sky kept spreading. The Watchers eye stayed open waiting and watching.Time was running out.Rowan crouched beside the fork in the road. The ground had silver dust on it.He brushed the dust aside.Three footprints appeared. They were fresh and small, barely larger than Aria's ha
THE FIRST BRANCH AWAKENS
The moment the knife went under the silver sand the desert changed.A warm wind blew across the dunes. The sky was hidden behind clouds but it slowly got brighter. The Keepers Staff made a humming sound like it was happy. The mark of Compassion on the staff started to glow and turned into a silver branch carved into the wood. The tiny leaves on the branch shimmered with life. The River's voice was carried by the wind."The first branch is alive, " it said.Away from the desert Aria felt something move. But it was not under her feet it was inside the world. She felt Hope was small and fragile but it was definitely there.Nadia looked at the staff with wonder in her eyes."What just happened?" she asked.Aria smiled gently."You chose to be kind of scared, " she said. The young girl shook her head."I almost hurt him, " she said.Aria said, "You almost did, but you did not.""The choice you made in the end is what matters, " she added. The old man stood up and he was steady even though
THE FOREST OF SILENT HEARTS
The desert disappeared behind them.Aria, Rowan and Nadia followed the Keepers Staff as it guided them across the paths of the River. The awakened Branch of Compassion glowed steadily.Beside it the second empty branch pulsed faintly waiting. The River flowed beneath their feet carrying reflections of forests, mountains and villages. As they walked the air grew cooler. The dry heat of the desert faded, replaced by the scent of rain, fresh earth, pine and wildflowers. Then the silver path ended. Before them stood a forest.Ancient trees stretched so high that their branches hid the sky.Their trunks were wide enough for ten people to stand around.Something was terribly wrong. Not a single bird sang.No insects buzzed. No leaves rustled. The forest was unnaturally silent.Nadia moved closer to Aria."I don't like this place, " she said.Rowan rested a hand on the hilt of his sword."It feels lonely, " he said. The River whispered, "The Forest of Silent Hearts."Aria frowned."Why is it
THE SECOND BRANCH
The ground shook under Arias' feet in the clearing. The Keepers Staff gave off a lot of light so the shadows under the trees went away. The second branch, which was once dark and empty started to glowIt was not as bright as Compassion though. Not yet, anyway. The people in masks took a step back. For the time since they showed up they seemed unsure of what to do.One of them hissed, "He remembers."Another one said, "Break it."They said this because they wanted to stop the Branch from blooming.Without warning all five of them attacked at the time.Dark vines came out of the ground. Ran towards the boy.Aria reacted away. She put the Keeper’s Staff on the earth.Silver light came out of it in a circle. The vines hit the barrier. Then turned into harmless mist.Rowan fought the attackers head-on.His sword moved through the air.Even though it went through their bodies each hit made them take a step back."They are not solid, " he shouted."They are tied to the darkness."Nadia did n
