Chapter 51 [The University]
CHAPTER FIFTY-ONEThe University Nadia woke to the smell of waffles. It was such an impossible smell that she was convinced she was still dreaming. She rolled over, burrowed deeper into her pillow, and tried to go back to sleep. Then she heard the laughter. Not one voice. Two.Lyla's laugh was unmistakable as it was ever bright, loud and the kind of laugh that filled an entire room was infectious enough. But there was a second laugh underneath hers. It was lower, warmer, almost unfamiliar, because Nadia had never heard Muri laugh like that before. So free and easy, like he was actually enjoying himself.Nadia groaned and sat up.Her hair was a disaster. It was short, messy, sticking up in a dozen directions. Her sleepwear was the same thing she had worn the previous night, she was too tire to change after what happened the previous night and the memory made her cheeks burn. She pulled on a robe, tied it tightly, and shuffled toward the kitchen, preparing herself for whatever chaos
Chapter 52 [White and Red]
CHAPTER FIFTY-THREEWhite and Red Lyla's jaw dropped. She actually took a step back from her own desk, as if the words she'd just heard had physical weight."Fragment soldier?" she repeated. "Jim? Jim Chen is a fragment soldier???"Muri did not answer. His silence was answer enough."Explain." Nadia said quietly. Her voice had that edge she used in the field, it was flat, controlled and one degree from violence. "You said you barely knew him. What brought you together?"Lyla pressed her fingers to her temple, pacing now, her voice half-bursting with nervous energy. "We met at a symposium three years ago. He was in geology, deep crust anomalies, tectonic memory, that kind of thing. I was presenting on extinction periodicity and he was in the front row. He asked a question that derailed my entire lecture."She laughed, hollow but fond, like she was remembering a stranger. "He said...he said, 'Doctor Cross, have you ever noticed that extinction events relates with atmospheric still
Chapter 53 [The Proxy]
CHAPTER FIFTY-THREEThe ProxyJim Chen stood in the half-ruined office, surrounded by shattered glass and darkness, and smiled with a warmth that belonged to the sun."I'm not here to fight you, Muri." He smiles. The words were layered, two voices speaking as one, Jim's ordinary tone and something vast beneath it, crackling like a growing fire. He spread his hands, palms open, in a gesture of peace."Unless you're willing to kill an innocent man to get to me." He adds with a smirk.Nadia's gun had not lowered as she stood in the corner, pressed against the wall, silently calculating angles. She could not see a clean shot that would not hit her sister who was still out cold on the ground."Jim Chen is a real person." Kael'Tharos continued through Jim's mouth. "A good one too, kind to his mother, gives money to strangers on the street, believes in science and the basic decency of people." A pause. "He agreed to becoming one of us and to let me borrow his body because he believed in wh
Chapter 54 [Intruders]
CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR Intruders Muri stood like a statue in the dark with Nadia pressed against his chest, his arms locked around her as if the world were trying to pull her away. The silence surrounding them was thick and heavy. The darkness pressed in from every side, thick enough to taste and heavy enough to feel. Nadia's heart hammered against her ribs, she could not see her own hand in front of her face neither could she hear her own pulse. All she could feel was Muri's body, hard as stone around her, and the slow, steady rise and fall of his breathing.Three minutes was how long it lasted, yet it felt like an hour, like the entire world had fallen into a well with no bottom. Then in a snap, sound returned. But not gently as the increase of a radio volume but with a slam of an unexpected speaker.Sirens screamed from every direction at once, fire alarms blared from a dozen buildings in overlapping, clashing wails, car horns joined the chaos, drivers panicking in the sudden dark. A
Chapter 55 [Intruders 2]
Chapter 55 Intruders 2The apartment looked like it was a war zone, glass everywhere, furniture overturned, the body of the first soldier sprawled across the coffee table, a dark smear spreading beneath it. Two more bodies, or what was left of them lay scorched and smoking near the shattered window, their armor melted into their flesh. And in the center of it all, Muri stood over the third soldier, whose neck he had just snapped like a dry twig. But he was not done. Before either sister could ask what had happened, Muri crouched and his hand drove into the soldier's chest with a sound that made Lyla flinch. She heard flesh tear, bone crack, metal grind. When his hand came out, it was wrapped around something that pulsed with blue light.A fragment. He did the same to the two scorched bodies and the one Nadia had disposed. Four fragments, each glowing with that same eerie blue, cradled in his palm like beating hearts made of light. Then he closed his fist and the fragments shattered.
Chapter 56 [Intruders 3]
Chapter 56 Intruders 3 Lyla's apartment was on the fourth floor of an old walk-up, though she called it her apartment she barely stayed in it as she was always on exploration. The lock was cheap, the door thinner than Nadia would have liked, and the moment Muri pushed it open, the air inside shifted. Five soldiers stood waiting in the dim living room, blue-ringed eyes, armored bodies and guns already raised. They opened fire the instant the door swung wide. Nadia's world became a storm of muzzle flashes and screaming sound. She had time to grab Lyla's arm and drag her sideways, but the hallway was a kill box, there was nowhere to go, but in a flash, Muri was in front of her. Already there, as if he had simply chosen to occupy the space between the bullets and the sisters. He did not duck, did not flinch but simply stood, arms spread slightly, and the rounds that hit him sparked and flattened against his skin like hail on a windshield. He stepped forward and the gunfire stopped.
Chapter 57 [Asylum]
CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN Asylum They found the boat with a tiny scrabble 'Cassandra' tucked between two rusted trawlers at the far end of the east dock. She was a medium-sized research boat, thirty feet long, white hull stained with salt and age, a small deckhouse, and a sturdy engine. Ot definitely was not built for ocean crossings, but for coastal surveys and the occasional student expedition.Lyla, however, looked at it like it was a luxury yacht."She'll do." she said as she was already scrambling aboard.Within minutes, she had the engine sputtering to life. The boat shuddered, and then settled into a low, steady hum. Nadia cast off the lines, and they roared out of the port, foam churning behind them as they left the city behind. They headed straight into the Atlantic. The lights of the coast faded behind them until there was nothing but darkness and the rhythmic slap of waves against the hull.At some point, Muri had vanished. Neither sister saw him go leave as one moment he was s
Chapter 58 [Zephyros]
CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHTZephyros Neraya descended into the water this time, and the ocean opened for her.Rather than the blinding light of before the nadia experienced, a spiral staircase of icy-blue crystal steps curved downward into the depths, glowing with soft bioluminescent light. The sisters exchanged a look with Lyla practically vibrating with excitement and Nadia tensed but relaxed as she knew with Muri around she was relatively safe. And besides Neraya acknowledged her the last time she came. With this in mind, they all descend down the stairs, on a rather short trip defeating the illusion of how deep it went down. The world beneath the waves was breathtaking as usual. Coral gardens stretched in every direction, alive with color and ancient light, strange but beautiful fishes drifted past, casting prismatic shadows across the seabed. Pillars of weathered stone rose from the white sand, covered in carvings that pulsed with the rhythm of the tide. And in the distance, a literall
Chapter 59 [Keeper of the Sun]
CHAPTER FIFTY-NINEKeeper of the SunKael'Tharos moved before anyone could stop him.He walked across the sand with the unhurried confidence of a man who had never once in his existence been forced to rush toward anything. The waves parted slightly around his footsteps, hissing loudly with steam gushing upon contact. The wind that Zephyros had been command without thinking fell still in his presence. He reached the table, the beautiful marble and precious stone table that Neraya had set for tea, and sat down as if it had always been his seat.He smiled at them and waved lightly."Please sit." he said, gesturing at the empty chairs. No one moved.Muri's lightning crackled around his fists, Zephyros's eyes had gone cold and hard, his wind building in tight spirals around his shoulders and Neraya's sea churned all around her paradise, her face unreadable but her hands trembling with barely restrained fury.Kael'Tharos poured himself a cup of tea, he did not even spare them a glance. He
Chapter 60 [Primordials]
Chapter 60 Primordials Muri's punch landed first and hard. There was no warning, no shift in stance, nothing. One moment he was standing in the wreckage of the shattered table, and the next his fist was already moving, lightning wrapping around his knuckles like a second skin. The punch caught Kael'Tharos square on the cheek with a sound like a thunderclap splitting the skies in half..Kael'Tharos was thrown back by the force. He skidded backward across the beach, his feet carving twin trenches through the sand and his suit tore open due to pressure l as he tried to slow himself. He scraped through a small dune, through a cluster of Neraya's carefully grown sea-flowers, and finally stopped when his heel dug deep enough to anchor him. The shockwave from the punch continued past him, flattening a line of reeds and sending a burst of spray across the lagoon.Kael'Tharos touched his cheek, a thin line of golden light leaked from a split in his skin. It was not blood but something old
