broken ceiling
The giant red eye looked down from the broken ceiling. Red light spilled over the dark control room. Maeson felt a cold chill run down her spine. It was a huge machine lens built into the roof. The glass lens whirred and focused right on her face. Kael sat on the carpet and smiled a wicked smile. The voice of the game master echoed from the mouth of Kael."You cannot hide from me in the real world," the game master said. "I see everything you do. I know every thought you have. The system is mine now."Ava pointed her weapon at Kael. Her hands shook just a little bit. "Get out of his head," Ava ordered in a loud voice. "Leave him alone right now."Kael laughed. He stood up slowly. He ignored the weapon in the hands of Ava. The red light from the giant eye above made the shadows look very long and scary. The two guards stepped forward. They raised their fists. They did not have weapons, but they were very strong.Maeson looked at the broken computer tower. Sparks still jumped from the b
water ghost
Maeson pressed her small hands against the cold glass of the big tank. The clear liquid bubbled softly. The person floating inside looked exactly like her. The pale skin and the short dark hair were a perfect match. Even the tiny scars on the chin were the same. The only difference was the heavy metal collar. The woman in the water did not have one. Wires ran from the top of the glass tank down to the head of the sleeping woman. Maeson felt her heart beat very fast. She could not breathe well. Ava walked up beside her and gasped loud."How can there be two of you?" Ava asked in a quiet voice. She looked at the tank and then at Maeson. Kael stepped into the bright white room. He rubbed his sore neck. He looked at the giant glass tube and frowned deep. "The game master plays cruel tricks. He makes copies to confuse us. He wants us to doubt our own minds." Maeson shook her head. She kept her eyes on the floating face. "This is not a simple trick. I can feel a strange pull. When I look at
The Dark Pit
Maeson fell hard through the cold air. The drop took her breath away. She hit a steep slide made of smooth stone and slid deep into the earth. The bright light from the white room faded into pitch black. She tossed her hands out to slow her fall down. Her thin fingers scraped the rough rock walls. The steep slide curved sharp to the left side. She bumped her right shoulder against the hard stone. A grunt of pure pain escaped her pale lips. The fast ride ended. She landed on a soft pile of damp dirt. She lay in the dark and tried to catch her breath. Her whole body hurt bad. She sat up and rubbed her sore shoulder. She looked up at the ceiling but saw no light. Ava and Kael were too far away. She was all alone in the deep underground. The old air smelled thick with rust and wet mud. She patted her dark coat pocket. The heavy wrench was still safe there. She felt a small wave of relief. She pulled the heavy metal tool out and held it tight. She stood on her shaky legs.A faint green glo
Stolen Brother
Maeson stared at the young boy. The sad words hung in the quiet air of the factory. She felt a sharp pain in her chest. Her real brother was here. The game master had taken him and turned him into a weapon. The boy looked so fragile. He looked nothing like the cruel monster from the digital garden. Tears rolled down his pale cheeks. He took another step toward the raised platform. He pointed a trembling finger at the heavy metal wrench in her hand."Please," the young boy begged. "The bad man is coming back. He will use my mind to hurt you. He will use me to kill everyone. You have to stop me before he takes control again."Maeson dropped the bent wrench. The heavy tool hit the metal floor with a loud clang. She shook her head. She would never hurt her own family. She climbed down the short metal stairs. She walked up to the crying boy. She knelt on the dirty floor and looked right into his dark eyes. She reached out and hugged his small shoulders. He felt cold and thin."I will never
Red Blade
Maeson watched the hard stone floor vanish beneath the feet of her best friend. Ava fell into the dark empty space below the cavern. Maeson did not think about the danger. She ran forward and jumped right into the wide hole. The cold air rushed past her face. She reached her thin arms out to grab the falling woman. Ava screamed in pure fear. The red light from the blade of the game master faded above them. Maeson stretched her fingers and caught the edge of the dark coat Ava wore. She pulled Ava close to her chest."I have you," Maeson said in a firm voice. They continued to drop down into the deep black pit. Maeson knew she needed to find a way to stop the drop. She closed her eyes and pictured the blue data strings of the system. She was the architect copy. She still held the power to shape the digital world. She forced the code to build a platform of solid light right under them. They hit the bright blue floor with a heavy thud. Pain shot up the legs of Maeson. But they were safe f
who are you?
Maeson stared at the cold metal chair beneath her tired legs. The small gray room smelled like old paper and strong soap. A loud clock ticked on the plain white wall. Tick tick tick. The sound echoed in the empty space. She looked at the stranger by the closed door. He wore a neat brown coat and black shoes. He held a small purple key in his right hand. The metal of the key caught the dim light from a single bulb above. He watched her with dark eyes that held no warmth at all."Who are you right now?" Maeson asked in a dry voice. Her throat felt rough like sandpaper. She tried to stand up. Her legs felt very heavy and weak. She sank back down into the hard chair. The stranger did not answer her question right away. He walked toward the center of the room. His shoes made no noise on the gray floor. "I am the keeper," he said in a low tone. "You broke the simulation." "You deleted the game master." "You think you won the war." "But you only opened a new box." "This is the dark vault."M
Sky war
Maeson gripped the cold stone rail of the balcony. The airship loomed over the city like a dark whale. Its belly glowed with a sick green light. She knew that ship. It was the mobile server of the game master. It contained the kill switch for every person still trapped in the pods. Ava stood by her side and gripped the edge of her blade. Kael moved to the front and checked the power levels of his rifle. The air was full of the smell of burnt wires and wet street trash. Below them the city burned with a bright orange flame."We cannot let them launch the reset," Maeson said. Her voice sounded steady despite the wind. "If they start the program, the minds of those people will be wiped for good. There will be no coming back to the real world.""How do we reach the ship?" Kael asked. "It is miles high in the night sky."Maeson looked at her glowing wrist. The blue light felt warm and real. It was the connection she had built between her soul and the digital realm. She looked at the purple
The Dark Mirror
Maeson looked at the man. The man possessed the exact same face. He wore dark armor. His eyes were cold and hard. The night air blew cold wind across the flat roof. Ava took a step front and raised her sharp blade. Kael stood by her side with his empty weapon. The dark sky hummed with the sound of a hundred hovering ships. Black pods continued to drop men on the panic below them. The city was a prison today. Maeson felt a deep chill in her bones. The copy looked at her with a blank expression. He did not blink. "I do not understand," Maeson said. She kept her voice low. She did not want to show fear. "You are another clone. The system makes copies to confuse us." The man shook his head. He placed his helmet on the tar surface. "I am not a clone," he replied. "I am the upgrade. The game master found flaws in your human heart. He built me without those flaws. I feel no pity. I feel no fear. I only follow the prime directive." Ava gripped her weapon handle. She glared at the new man. "We
Final Trap
Maeson stared through the window of the white ship. The giant metal ring around the moon grew larger with every passing second. The red warning light flashed on the control panel. The cold machine in the dark space prepared to destroy her home. She felt a deep fear in her chest. She looked at her brother in the pilot seat. The young boy kept his small hands on the steering wheel. His face looked brave and focused. Ava sat in the back row next to Kael. They both looked out the window in pure silence. The white ship moved closer to the dark metal structure. The moon looked pale and dead behind the giant weapon. Maeson saw large black solar panels stretching across the star field. They absorbed the light to charge the central laser. The red beam pulsed in the middle of the ring. It pointed straight down at the earth. Kael leaned forward and pointed a finger at a small opening in the heavy metal hull. He spotted a docking bay near the main power core. The young boy steered the ship toward
Green Beam
Maeson pulled the thin metal wire from the neck of the older man. Sparks flew from the fake skin. The man in the white suit screamed a loud mechanical sound. He was not a human at all. He was an android built to guard the core. The green laser pulsed below the glass floor. The color change meant the target was new. The beam would not burn the earth today. It would send a wake signal to every pod in the deep underground. The man grabbed the wrist of Maeson. His grip was tight like a vice. He tried to pull the wire back. Maeson held on with all her strength. She planted her boots on the floor and pulled hard.Kael jumped up from the ground. He ran to the man in the white suit. Kael wrapped his strong arms around the waist of the bad android. He pulled the man backward to break the grip. Ava grabbed her dropped blade from the floor. She rushed forward and swung the sharp edge. She hit the arm of the android. The fake skin peeled back to show thick wires and metal bones. The man yelled an
