Chapter 31 — A Long, Long Life / Is There Really a Clear Square?
By then the Spire's prompt had reached its last line —> [ …for Mario is his own companion — who wants to share your fate! ]Black Mario dropped out of the sky and slammed the ground into shuddering. Cole's eyes pulled tight; without hesitation he drew the giant match.Across the board, Roy yelped, "An ability!"Karl was sprawled where Cole had kicked him; black Mario's eyes went straight to Cole. It looked at the match in his hand, its lightless eyes glittering, broke into its bouncing run, and kicked at Cole's right leg. Cole dodged it — and then Mario's right hand came at his head at a speed that nearly outran his sharpened sight.Cole could track an ordinary pistol round in flight now. This hand moved faster than a bullet. He had no time to bring the match up to guard his skull. He snapped his head back and away, pulled the match into the wrist-tattoo and drew it out again in the same instant — out at the exact angle to sit against his right cheek. Mario's fist struck the match; t
Chapter 32 — I'm Jumping To
Talking to a clever man took the least effort of all. Cole asked, and three seconds later the S he'd drawn on the white shell began to glow.A low voice spoke in his head. "One hour, no more. When it ends, the save erases itself automatically. You get one reload, and only one.""Mm. Thank you."Adrian was crisp and spare, and made the egg's workings a little clearer in the saying. His voice reached only Cole; to Mario and the other two, Cole had simply fallen silent. Mario's patience ran out. "Child, do you dislike this game? You don't want to play with Uncle Mario anymore? Why haven't you chosen where to jump?"Cole tucked the egg away, calm, and looked up at the giant puppet. "From the start I've been thinking. Six thousand four hundred fifty-six players, in a game with only one hundred fifty squares, and not one of them ever cleared it. Isn't that a little grotesquely unlikely?"Mario's eyes slid half-shut. "Sweet child, Uncle Mario doesn't know what you mean. Make your choice."Be
Chapter 33 — Square One
Mario hadn't expected him to dither so long and then, all at once, declare he was jumping. "Oh? Child — nothing more to say? You'll jump now?" Exposed line after line, Uncle Mario still beamed. It straightened the crooked red cap on its head. "Uncle Mario loves a clever child. Won't you say a little more about all the surprises Uncle Mario has prepared for you?"Six Convict squares in a row are a surprise?Cole gave it a cold glance. "I'm jumping backward."Mario waved a giant hand. "And to which square?""Square one.""Oh — square o—" The sound cut off; the whole giant Mario froze in the air, as if someone had hit pause on an old television, the great puppet locked absurdly mid-gesture. Two seconds later it ground its head around and fixed its black eyes on Cole.Roy said, baffled, "Square one? Did he misspeak?"Walt's brow knotted; he said nothing, thinking hard.Mario's mouth curled. "I didn't mishear, child? You want to jump to square one?"Cole ignored it entirely and called up a
Chapter 34 — Too Gentle / A Red Cap Isn't Always a Princess
Cole crouched and picked up a coin."Why square one?" Walt asked.Cole looked up from the gold. "Because a Spire game can always be won."Walt frowned, murmuring, "Square one, square one…" turning it over, hunting for the thread."Six thousand players, and not one cleared it," Cole said. "That proves two things. One: there's no Free Jump past square 120. Two: somewhere in the last stretch there are six or more Convict squares in a row. And given how foul this thing is—" he glanced at Mario, sniveling on its broken stage "—he set the last six as Convict squares, with a run of King squares right before them."You claw all the way to the end. You land on King squares, and get their gifts — an ability, a save — six squares from the finish. And then you can never reach the finish.Because the whole game, start to end, was built to make you hunt for the single Clear square."From the beginning I thought there were too many Free Jump squares," Cole said. "Twenty percent — thirty of them. Nin
Chapter 35 — Dr. Lowe / The Best Defense
"I'm not an ability-user," Walt said. "I won't join your organization." The offer held no draw for him.Felix thought a moment. "That's fine — you don't have to join; we have standards too, not just any ability-user gets in. We can trade information instead. You tell us the inside of Instance Two, and we'll give you intel of equal value."Cole's steps stopped. He turned, walked back unhurriedly, and stood beside Roy.Roy said, alarmed, "You left — why'd you come back?"Cole gave him a look. "Can't a man take a walk?""Sure — sure—" Roy plainly didn't dare say otherwise.Felix and his two partners understood at once, and all three looked at Cole. This one, they thought, is the real spine of the three. The organization's base was in Brooklyn, half an hour's walk, and at the end of it stood a mall — five connected buildings between several residential blocks, sprawling, the only mall for miles, the surrounding towers all apartments. People clustered around it, in and out. Strangers drew
Chapter 36 — Mario's Treasure / Ten Days
Cole left the room, found an empty shop on the mall's top floor, locked the door from inside, laid a few garments on the ground, and made to rest.He lay down behind the cashier's counter, the broad wooden cabinet hiding his body. He listened to the world around him, swept his eyes over the room, and caught a camera in the corner. He took a coin from the register, flicked his wrist, and the coin shot out and cut the camera's wiring. The cameras were likely dead by now — but you didn't get careless. He rolled over, slid his hand into his pack, and under its cover drew out the book, so that from any angle it looked to have come from the bag and not from empty air. He turned to the last page.> 【 Ability: Huff and Puff 】> 【 Owner: Roy (Registered Player) 】> 【 Type: Atomic 】> 【 Function: breathe a violent storm from the mouth, lasting 3 minutes, wind speed up to force 10 】> 【 Level: 2 】> 【 Restriction: per use, choose only to inhale OR exhale the storm; 10-minute cooldown. 】> 【 Note
Chapter 37 — The Match Fiend
Four days later, in the city, a park.A plump, honest-faced boy darted into a convenience store like a streak of lightning. The food and water had long since been picked clean; not giving up, he ran into the stockroom and dug under the staff cot until he'd turned up three boxes of crackers and half a case of bottled water. There weren't many survivors left — but food had shelf lives, and by now the edible things were running out. He hurried back and handed the water to a tall, thin boy.The bean-pole boy drank deep. "Finally. Toby — food's so hard to find now, maybe we should get out of the city. Too many people here. We'll run out."Toby crammed two crackers in at once. "I'll eat less. Give the rest to you."The thin boy reddened. "That's not what I meant.""I know." Toby swallowed. "I'm a Registered Player, I barely get hungry anymore; you're a Reserve, weaker body. I notice I eat less and less every day and never feel it. You too, right — eating less. Maybe it's like Cassie said —
Chapter 38 — Kill Bill
Cole let Jax get three minutes ahead before he eased after him.Twenty minutes of tailing, and Jax walked into a factory. He cut around the old workshops toward the iron gate — and just before he reached it, his steps turned, and he stopped before an old manhole cover beside the gate. He set one foot on it, and the next instant he was gone.Cole came out from behind the workshop and walked to the rusted cover. Without hesitation he set his foot on it.A booming voice rose at once in his head.> [ Ding-dong! Single-player instance "Kill Bill" triggered. 11:36 AM, November 30th. Player Cole Mercer has safely entered. ]> [ Sandbox loading… Data load complete… ]His body plunged. It came without warning, and for a moment he didn't catch up — but he would not be caught flat the way he had been the first time. The feeling was exactly the mole's tunnel; he spread his arms and braced his palms against the shaft's two walls, sliding down to steady himself. After a long fall he slammed, with a
Chapter 39 — Rollback
The earthworm was far bigger than he'd imagined. The tunnel ran six feet high, and the worm's body filled half of it; out past the lamp's reach, its tail slammed boom, boom against the walls. Seeing Cole, it shrieked, lifted its huge deep-brown head, and without a beat charged straight for the lamp in his hand.Cole sidestepped fast, ran three meters back, and set the lamp on the ground — far enough to light the worm's girdle, near enough that the worm couldn't smash it. Finding it couldn't destroy the hateful light, the worm shrieked in fury, then opened its small toothless mouth and bit at Cole's shoulder.Cole pushed off and dodged. He swung the club, and as the worm turned its head to bite he brought the club down on the pale ring of its girdle with everything he had. The recoil flung him into the wall; the worm writhed in pain — and on its girdle there was only a thin crack.Cole's eyes pulled tight. He went back in at once. The worm's hide was the hardest iron. Every blow Cole l
Chapter 40 — Bill / Welcome to the Monster World
The third time in, Cole didn't rush. He walked the tunnel slowly, eyes down, turning over every moment of the first two runs.If he could use the giant match, he'd surely kill the worm. But the Spire had set it: only the club could wound it. Fire to pen it wasn't enough. The worm fears fire; the club hurts it; no abilities. The three rules were limits — and, in their way, hints. How, with that club, was anyone meant to beat that worm to death? His steps stopped.Wait. Can that club even kill the worm?It was a plain, hard club — no special reinforcement, nothing. And the worm's hide was at least the hardness of thick ceramic. Cole had thrown his whole body into it, designed a fire-cage to pin it, and managed only to crack its girdle open. That was already his ceiling. Was there really a player who could club that thing to death?Jax couldn't — or he wouldn't still be running S3. Could Adrian Vance?Cole didn't reach for the egg. He already had the answer. No. No abilities, only a crud
