Chapter 41 : Don't Drop Your Right Shoulder
The second day brought beasts. Not at dawn — the morning was clear and cold and ordinary, the road continuing north through terrain that was becoming less agricultural and more open, the hills to the east closer now. Lyset presented the rest of what she'd found in the examination, the things she'd called *tonight* that were now this morning.Daren listened without interrupting. When she finished he was quiet for a long time."How long," he said."Before it becomes visible to anyone looking?" She considered. "The integration is accelerating. The timeline I gave you after the wolf heart was based on a rate that the master's nature has significantly increased. At the current rate —" she paused. "Months, not years. Before the accumulated nature of what you're carrying starts producing effects that aren't concealable.""Effects like what.""The speed is already at the edge of what passes for human variation," she said. "The claws are currently voluntary and retractable but the threshold fo

Chapter 42 : What Walks Through the Gates
The demon animal was at the river crossing. They reached it on the third day, in the golden-violet light of the Veil-Lands' late afternoon, when the capital's distant outline was already visible on the horizon — towers and walls and the particular density of a city that had been accumulating itself in one place for centuries. The river crossing was a wide stone bridge — old, well-maintained, the kind of infrastructure that suggested something had been making sure it stayed usable for a long time. The road traffic had been increasing through the day as they got closer to the capital, more travelers, more carts, more of the ordinary motion of a city's supply chain flowing toward it along the road's arteries. The traffic had stopped at the bridge. Not because the bridge was out. Because of what was on the bridge. It was large — not the master's eight feet, more like five, but wider than the master had been, built along horizontal lines rather than vertical ones, the body of something tha

Chapter 43: The Gilded Rest
The inn the King's letter had arranged for them was called The Gilded Rest, which Daren thought was either the most honest name for an inn he'd ever encountered or the most ironic, depending on how the next few days went.It sat three streets back from the capital's main thoroughfare in the particular way of establishments that had decided proximity to the noise was less valuable than proximity to the quiet, a narrow-fronted building of dark stone with a sign above the door that had been repainted recently enough that the gold lettering still caught the lamplight cleanly. The innkeeper was a woman of indeterminate age who looked at Vasha's sash and Lyset's robes with the practiced neutrality of someone who had housed people operating outside ordinary categories before and had made her peace with the fact that ordinary categories were aspirational at best. She looked at Daren with something slightly less neutral. Not hostile. Not afraid. The specific, careful attention of someone whose

Chapter 44 : Everything at Once
The inn's dining room was nearly empty at this hour — two other tables occupied, both by people who had the specific self-contained quality of solo travelers who had learned to eat without making eye contact, which suited Daren fine. Vasha had chosen the corner table without apparently deciding to, the same instinct that had chosen the corner room, and Lyset was already there when he came down, spellbook open beside her plate in the way that suggested she'd been writing since they'd separated upstairs and hadn't fully stopped. The food was better than the road's dried meat and hard bread — something slow-cooked, something with actual flavor, the kind of meal that Daren's body received with the specific gratitude of something that had been running on functional fuel for too long and had just been reminded that fuel could also be good. He ate. The hunger registered the meal and remained where it was, unchanged. He'd stopped expecting food to touch it. Lyset waited until they'd finis

Chapter 45 : Don't Be Angry Near Old Things
The suppression rings were not a new idea — Lyset had been building the theoretical framework since the road, since the point where the integration's radiation had started registering on people's instincts rather than just on her working's instruments. But the capital had moved the timeline from eventually to as soon as possible , and the conversation over the inn's dining room table in the lamplight was the first time she'd presented the full design. Four rings. One for each integrated nature. Worn on the right hand — the fighting hand, the dagger hand, the hand that had regrown overnight and been improved by the regrowing. "They don't eliminate the signature," Lyset said. "I can't build something that does that — the integration is too deep, too fundamental to what Daren is now. Elimination would require dismantling what's there, which is not something I'm willing to attempt and not something that would be survivable in any case." She turned the spellbook to a page of caref

Chapter 46. : One Finger at a Time
He couldn't sleep. This was not unusual — he'd had varying degrees of difficulty sleeping since the first night in the violet-sky field, the new world's rhythms never quite syncing with whatever his body had calibrated itself to across nineteen years of ordinary nights. But tonight the difficulty had a specific quality, not the restless turning of someone whose mind was running too fast but the particular alert stillness of someone whose body had decided that the environment warranted monitoring. The wolf-blood's hum. Steady, present, reading the city through the inn's walls with the expanded sensory awareness that had been growing since Aldenmoor. The capital was loud even at this hour — not with the specific sounds of an active street but with the undercurrent of a large population's sleeping presence, the thousand small sounds of many people occupying shared space, the particular texture of a city's nighttime self that was entirely different from its daytime self and required i

Chapter 47 : What Sits at the Center
The palace sat at the capital's center the way a stone sits at the bottom of a river — everything moving around it, shaped by it, the current of the city flowing outward from its walls in directions the walls had decided centuries before any of the current inhabitants were born.Daren had seen it from the inn window the morning after they arrived, its towers visible above the roofline, dark against the violet sky. He'd looked at it for a while. Then he'd gone back to practicing the single claw on the index finger, because looking at a thing and being ready for it were different operations and only one of them was useful.By the morning of the audience he'd gotten the single claw down to a reliable six seconds on three consecutive fingers independently. Lyset had watched the last session without comment, which from Lyset meant she was pleased and didn't want to say so in case he stopped being careful about it.The first suppression ring sat on his right index finger.Lyset had finished

Chapter 48 : Four Hundred Years
Daren had thought about this moment. He'd run various versions of it through his head — the formal throne room version, the intimidating version, the version where the King immediately demonstrated whatever centuries of rule had done to his biology in a way that required a response. What he found was a man sitting at a table covered in documents. Not a throne. A working table, the surface crowded with maps and letters and what appeared to be supply requisition forms, the kind of administrative accumulation that didn't care how long you'd been ruling or what your biology had become over the course of it. The King looked up when they entered, set down his pen, and gave them the complete attention of someone who had trained themselves, over a very long time, to be fully present in whatever room they were currently in. He was, as Lyset had suggested, not entirely human. Not in any way that the eye could catch easily — he looked like a man in his fifties, grey at the temples, with the

Chapter 49 : No More Travelers
"You're offering me the Iron Hall," Daren said. "I'm offering you resources," the King said. "The Iron Hall is one of them. Access to the capital's research archives is another. My intelligence network's findings on Mordrach's current movements is a third." He turned from the window. "What I'm asking in return is transparency. Not allegiance — I have disciples for that, and you're not mine. Transparency. When something significant changes in what you are, I want to know." "Why," Daren said. "Because the last time something like you existed in the Veil-Lands," the King said, "nobody knew about it until it was too late to do anything but respond. I'd rather be in a position to prepare." He looked at Daren steadily. "I'm not asking you to be a weapon. I'm asking you to let me be ready." Daren thought about the traveler on the road. About the report sent north while they camped and the question of who was receiving it. About the organized quality of the watching from the gate to

Chapter 50 : The Ground Was Already Prepared
In the corridor, walking back through the palace's functional architecture toward the courtyard and the city beyond it, Lyset said quietly: "He knows more than he told us." "Yes," Daren said. "Considerably more." "Yes." Vasha said nothing. She walked with the same contained, forward-facing purpose she always walked with, her hand at her side rather than on her sword, the sun-colored sash bright in the corridor's light. Then, after a moment: "The bell metaphor," she said. "He's heard it before. Not as a metaphor." She looked at Daren sideways. "Someone told him specifically to listen for it. Someone who knew what it meant." Daren thought about that. About a goddess who reached across worlds and chose someone specifically, who had said in the golden chamber that she'd searched for the right soul and found it asleep in a bedroom that smelled of broth and scallions. About a King who had been ruling for four hundred years and had felt something like a bell not yet st
