Adam Swift Pov The lantern flame flickered inside the iron cage, throwing tall, distorted shadows across the oak-paneled walls of the commander’s quarters. Outside, the night wind howled through the high stone pass of the Red Redoubt, driving fine, icy sleet against the diamond-pane windows with a sound like thrown sand.I sat at the heavy oak trestle table, my right hand resting flat over the leather-bound ledger. My left arm, wrapped tight in linen bandages beneath a thick woolen tunic, throbbed with a dull, rhythmic ache that matched the pulse in my temple.Opposite me sat Dax.The old scout was methodically cleaning his hunting knife with an oiled rag, the rhythmic shhh-shhh of steel on wool filling the quiet room. He had a deep, purple bruise running from his jawline down into his collar, courtesy of the yard fighting three days ago, but his dark, hawk-like eyes were as sharp as ever. They kept darting from my face to the parchment scrap resting beside the lantern—the torn birth

The high estate of Blackspire did not smell of pine oil or mountain hearths like the forts of the northern frontier. It smelled of cold river silt, dried nightshade, and the bitter, coppery tang of old iron.Perched above the jagged gorge where the Great Capital Road met the eastern trade passes, the fortress was a monolithic slab of dark basalt, built two centuries ago by a dynasty of mad lords and long since swallowed by the imperial crown. It sat perpetually under a blanket of heavy, gray drizzle—a place where the sun was only ever a pale, ghostly disk behind thick layers of wool-colored fog. In the grand solar on the third tier, four men stood around an immense, dark mahogany table carved with relief maps of the seven provinces. They were not border mercenaries or tavern-brawl veterans. These were men who commanded armies.General Marcus Vance—a veteran of twenty campaigns who had broken the western clans at the Salt Flats—stood leaning over the map, his thick, scarred fingers tr

The subterranean vault beneath the Red Redoubt smelled of cold damp, old lime, and the sour, lingering stink of human fear.Adam Swift descended the slick winding stairs alone, a single iron oil lantern swinging from his right hand. The flame sputtered against the draft, throwing long, grotesque shadows against the moss-slick basalt walls. His left arm remained tightly bound across his ribs in heavy linen wraps, a deep, pulsing ache reminding him with every breath of the battle that had won him this stone fortress.Behind him, the heavy oak door at the top of the stairwell clicked shut. Dax stood guard above, leaving Adam alone in the suffocating quiet of the lower cells. At the far end of the corridor, behind a heavy iron-grate door, Jackson Carter sat on a heap of rot-eaten straw. The former master of the Western Reserve was barely recognizable. His once-pristine velvet coats were gone, replaced by a filthy, torn woolen tunic stained with grime and dried mud. His fingernails were sp

Ethan Hayes Pov The dust in the record vault at the top of the Keep’s north tower didn't smell like limestone or wet slate. It smelled of old horse-glue, yellowing linen paper, and dry rot.Nobody had opened the heavy oak door on the third floor of the archive since the syndicate took the fortress ten years ago. The brass hinges groaned under my hand with a dry, metallic screech that set my back teeth on edge. I slipped inside, closing the door behind me until only a sliver of pale afternoon light filtered through the crack. In my left hand, I held a stolen brass skeleton key I’d lifted from the quartermaster's ring while he was taking a delivery of salted mutton in the lower yard. The room was lined from floor to stone vault with cedar shelves, stacked high with moldering leather binders, tied tax rolls, and timber leases. A thick layer of white lime dust lay over everything like frozen crust.I didn't care about the timber leases or the silver mining rights.I went straight to the

Ethan Hayes Pov The old timber lodge at the edge of the lower valley smelled of damp pine, woodsmoke, and dry resin. It sat tucked behind an outcrop of grey granite, three miles below the Red Redoubt's outer gates, almost entirely hidden by the dense, snow-laden boughs of ancient hemlocks. A thin plume of grey smoke curled up from the stone chimney, rising into the cold, quiet dusk.I didn't knock. I pushed the heavy oak door open with the toe of my boot, my hand resting flat over the pommel of my hunting blade.Inside, sitting in a low, high-backed armchair beside the hearth, was William Hayes. He wasn't the proud, broad-shouldered timber merchant I remembered from my early childhood. His left leg was stretched out stiff toward the fire, wrapped in greasy flannel to fight the mountain dampness. His hands, swollen and trembling with winter joint-rot, held a wooden bowl of thin broth. He had aged fifteen years in the three years since he’d retreated from the high valley into these for
