Chapter 41
Bruce Thompson and the young girl with short brown hair fell into the absolute darkness of the city sewers. They dropped ten feet, splashing hard into a river of freezing, foul-smelling water. The smell of rot and old mud immediately filled Bruce’s nose. He gritted his teeth, holding his burned right arm above the dirty water to keep it from getting infected. Above them, the rusted iron grate was still open. GRRRRRRRR.The Golden Bloodhound stuck its glowing face into the hole. The blinding golden light shined down into the sewer, sweeping across the dark, wet walls. "They are coming down!" the girl whispered in panic. She splashed backward in the water, hugging her leather bag of medicine tightly to her chest. "No, they are not," Bruce grunted. He raised his good left hand toward the open hole. He did not have much magic left, but he only needed a tiny drop. He focused on the iron hinges of the heavy grate. He pushed a small pulse of dark Void magic upward. The magic hit the i
Chapter 42
Bruce gasped. It felt like plunging his burning arm into a bucket of freezing, soothing snow. The blue liquid sizzled as it touched the holy burns. The dark, cracked blisters stopped smoking. The terrible, agonizing pain that had been clouding his mind completely vanished. The medicine soaked into his skin, traveling directly into his chest. His cracked mana core eagerly drank the healing magic. The sharp stabbing pain in his soul dulled into a quiet ache. Bruce opened and closed his right hand. His fingers moved perfectly. He was not completely healed, but his Void-Forged Body was functional again. He had his strength back. "Thank you, Elara," Bruce said, looking her in the eyes. "I will never forget this."Bruce stood up. He pulled the heavy brown cloak off his shoulders and let it drop into the dirty sewer water. He didn't need to hide anymore. He needed them to see him. "Which way is the Northern Gate?" Bruce asked. Elara pointed down a long, dark tunnel to the right. "Follow
Chapter 43
Bruce Thompson climbed out of the hole. He stood up slowly. The heavy, freezing rain immediately soaked his hair and washed the sewer dirt from his face. His torn shirt clung to his chest. His right arm was covered in the glowing blue medicine, his skin blackened but no longer smoking. He did not look left or right. He did not try to hide in the shadows of the buildings. Bruce stepped out into the middle of the wide, open road. "There he is!" a guard yelled from the front line. "The Void-Born!""Archers!" the captain of the Iron-Guard roared. "Draw your strings!"Twenty guards in the back row raised heavy iron crossbows. The tips of their arrows were enchanted, glowing with crackling red fire and sharp wind magic. Bruce did not stop. He began to walk directly toward the fifty heavily armored soldiers and the massive, shimmering blue barrier. He walked openly, with slow, steady, purposeful steps. His bare feet splashed in the deep puddles on the cobblestones. The rain beat down on
Chapter 44
Bruce was alone in the plaza. He walked slowly toward the massive, eighty-foot gate. The glowing blue Runic Defense Array shimmered brightly, blocking the entire exit. The magic was so thick it looked like a wall of solid blue glass. Bruce stopped right in front of the barrier. He looked up at Lady Hestia, who was standing on the wall, staring down at him with wide, crazy eyes. "You think you have won, Bruce?" Hestia yelled down at him, her voice cracking with madness. "You think you can just walk out of my city? That barrier is powered by the deep earth! It is older than you! It is stronger than your pet angel! You cannot break it!"Bruce did not say a word. He raised his left hand. He placed his open palm flat against the shimmering blue wall of the barrier. The blue magic immediately flared up, trying to push him away. It sent a shock of electricity up his arm. But Bruce pushed back. He dug his bare feet into the cobblestones. He closed his eyes and focused all of his willpowe
Chapter 45
The giant fist, the size of a small house, came crashing down. It was made of rusted iron, dark stone, and glowing red hard-light. Lady Hestia, now a hideous, mutated monster fused entirely with the eighty-foot Northern Gate, let out a deafening roar as she struck. She wanted to smash Bruce Thompson into a bloody paste on the wet cobblestones. Bruce did not freeze. The glowing blue medicine he had received from Elara the slum-girl was working perfectly. His burned right arm was numb to the pain, and his cracked mana core was stable. With his Void-Forged Body, Bruce pushed off the ground. He leaped backward with incredible, unnatural speed. BOOM!Hestia’s massive fist slammed into the exact spot where Bruce had been standing a split second before. The impact was like a falling meteor. The ground shook violently. Dozens of heavy cobblestones shattered into sharp pieces of flying rock. A huge crater was left in the street, rapidly filling with the freezing, dirty rain. Bruce landed
Chapter 46
The massive barrage of elemental arrows and spears hit the shield. They did not bounce off. They did not explode. When the red fire arrows and the blue ice spears touched the thick black smoke of the Seraph's wings, they simply sank into the darkness. It looked like throwing small stones into a deep, bottomless ocean. The elemental magic hissed for a split second, and then completely vanished. The Ashen Shield absorbed every single attack effortlessly. The guards in the plaza gasped in horror. Their strongest attacks had done absolutely nothing. Inside the dome of dark smoke, Bruce stood perfectly safe. The noise of the battle outside was muffled. Bruce closed his eyes. He listened to the heavy, steady beating of his own heart. He thought about the Golden Cell. He thought about his mother, Victoria, hanging from the burning chains of hard-light. He remembered how frail and thin she looked. He remembered the tears falling down her dirty cheeks. He remembered her screaming for him
Chapter 47
Without even slowing his sprint, Bruce reached his left hand up and caught the glowing red fire-arrow directly out of the air. He did not even look at it. He simply absorbed the fire magic into his palm, turning the iron arrowhead to rust, and kept running. The guards on the ground were completely decimated. They could not fight back. They could not even defend themselves. Every time they swung a weapon, Bruce was already behind them. Every time they tried to use magic, Bruce ate it, growing stronger, faster, and more deadly. It was not a battle. It was a harvest. In less than sixty seconds, the remaining twenty Iron-Guards on the ground were completely erased. There were no bodies. There was no blood. There were only piles of gray ash quickly washing away in the freezing rain. Bruce slid to a stop. His bare feet dug deep grooves into the wet stone. He was breathing deeply, but he was not tired. The stolen magic rushed through his veins, repairing his torn muscles instantly. The
Chapter 48
The Seraph was not strong enough to stop the monster completely, but the dark chains slowed the giant arms down for just one crucial second. Bruce used that second perfectly. He ran straight up the falling right arm. His bare feet found traction on the rusty iron and the glowing red spikes. He sprinted up the massive arm like it was a ramp, defying gravity. "Get off me!" Hestia screamed. She tried to shake her arm, but Bruce was too fast. He reached the shoulder of the giant monster. He leaped off the metal joint, launching himself high into the air, directly toward the center of the gate. He was flying straight toward Hestia’s giant, ugly face. Bruce reached his left hand out. The Brand of the Void on his shoulder flared with its maximum power. The deep purple light illuminated the rainy night. He was ready to pull the corrupted magic right out of her brain. He was ready to end the Matriarch once and for all. "I am going to eat you alive, Hestia," Bruce whispered as he flew thro
Chapter 49
Bruce Thompson lay flat on the wet, cold cobblestones. The holy net of pure, burning hard-light was wrapped tightly around his body. The magic acted like glowing ropes of fire, pinning his arms to his sides and his legs together. Every time he took a breath, the net burned deeper into his wet clothes and his skin. He could smell the sickening scent of his own burning flesh. He was completely trapped. Above him, the giant, mutated monster that used to be Lady Hestia looked down. She was fused into the massive, eighty-foot Northern Gate. Her giant iron face twisted into an ugly, jagged smile. Her eyes burned with red, stolen blood-magic. She raised her massive foot, which was made of heavy iron beams and sharp spikes. She hovered it directly over Bruce’s head, ready to stomp him into a bloody paste. "I have you now!" Hestia’s monstrous voice roared. The sound shook the heavy rain in the air. "You are nothing but a trapped rat, Bruce! A little, dirty rat caught in a trap!"But befor
Chapter 50
"Very little, Master," the Seraph replied. "Only enough for one final attack. But I cannot come out of your shadow. The holy net will burn me instantly.""You don't need to come out," Bruce commanded. "I am the Devourer. I am the bridge. I want you to push all of your remaining power directly into my body. Every single drop. I will channel your true, localized power through my own flesh."The Seraph was completely shocked by the order. "Master, you cannot do that!" the Seraph warned quickly. "My power is Forbidden. It is too dense, too chaotic! Your Void-Forged Body is strong, but you are still a mortal boy! If I push my full power through your cracked core, it will break your bones! It will tear your muscles apart! You might explode!""I don't care!" Bruce shouted out loud. His sudden shout made Bontus and Hestia stop arguing. They both looked down at the boy in the glowing net. "I don't care if it breaks my bones!" Bruce yelled, his voice echoing over the rain. He opened his eyes
