21. Following The Money
The morning after the auction felt different to Sebastian. He no longer regretted walking away from Lot Twenty-Seven. Losing the property still stung, but his father's lessons had changed the way he used to think. An investigator measured success by information before profit because information comes first and profit will automatically follow it.The notebook lay open beside his bed and one sentence had been underlined twice in his father's handwriting. “Money always leaves footprints. Find the footprints before you chase the money.”Sebastian read it again and again before closing the notebook finally. His mind raced toward his own case and he realized if Blackstone had purchased the laundromat, there would be paperwork. And paperwork meant records. Those records will lead him to the people involved and the mistakes they might make during the process. An hour later, Sebastian walked into the City Records Office. There were rows of metal filing cabinets stretched across the room whil
22. Back to Blackstone
The polished revolving glass doors of Blackstone Asset Recovery looked exactly as Sebastian remembered before he left. For nearly five years, he had walked through these doors believing they were the entrance to his future. Three months ago, he had been escorted out in front of everyone like a criminal yet today he returned by his choice but not as an employee who used to work here, as an investigator who would find the secrets buried deep inside this company.Sebastian adjusted the strap of his work backpack, inside it rested his father's field notes, the faded photograph and the brass key. He took a slow breath before stepping into the marble lobby. The moment he entered almost immediately all the ongoing conversations faltered. All heads turned toward him as recognition spread across their faces instantly.“The fraud investigator.” one voice whispered. “I thought he'd disappeared.” The other voice said quietly.“He's got some nerve coming back.” Someone from behind mocked him.T
23. Building His Future
As Sebastian closed the file, something slipped from between two pages and landed softly on the table. The thin piece of paper drifted through the air before settling on the polished wooden table.Sebastian's eyes narrowed and he reached for it instantly. It was not a part of auction records. The paper seemed older than everything other files and documents as its edges yellowed and brittle. Someone had folded it so many times that faint cracks ran along the creases. He unfolded it carefully and discovered it was an inventory slip and across the top, in faded black ink written :Evidence Box 417.Transferred by Marcus Hale.Receiving Archive : Restricted Records Vault.Authorization : D. Kane Sebastian's breath hitched the moment he read his father's name initial on it and Marcus’s signature. He read the slip again it showed transferred not destroyed by Marcus.“There's something missing which I'm unaware of.” Sebastian mumbled under his breath. His finger tightened around the paper.
24. The First Profit
The morning air carried the scent of damp concrete and rust. Sebastian stood across the street from the abandoned machine repair shop, one hand tucked into his jacket pocket while the other held a folded city utility map. Commuters hurried past without sparing the crumbling building a second glance. To them, it was another forgotten relic waiting to be demolished. But to Sebastian, it was a question. He crossed the empty road. A loose sheet of corrugated metal rattled somewhere on the roof as the wind picked up. Weeds pushed through cracks in the pavement, brushing against his shoes. The front entrance was secured with heavy chain locks. He wasn't surprised as his father's notebook rested inside his backpack, its worn cover already beginning to soften from constant use and he remembered the line from the previous night's reading that suited his situation at the moment.Always inspect the surrounding before inspecting the asset. He walked past the entrance. The alley behind the shop wa
25. A Different Kind of Wealth
Calvin Rhodes remained inside the Black Sedan long after Sebastian disappeared into the evening crowd. His fingers tapped slowly against the leather armrest as he replayed what he had just witnessed. The warehouse, the sale and the smile on Sebastian's face.Three months ago, Sebastian Kane had left Blackstone unemployed, disgraced and nearly broke. Calvin had personally watched him escorted from the building. So people like that didn't recover this quickly, certainly not without any help.“Find out what he sold.” Calvin said without taking his eyes off the road. The driver glanced at him through the rear view mirror. “Sir ?..”“I don't care if it was a warehouse, a lottery ticket or buried treasure.” Calvin's voice remained calm. “I want every transaction connected to Sebastian Kane over the last month.”“Yes sir.” The driver nodded and with that the sedan eased into the traffic and disappeared into the city's crowd. The following morning Sebastian sat inside his small apartment wit
26. Shopping for himself
"Enough.” The store owners walked inside through the entrance door, silencing every member present inside.“What's going on ?” He asked, looking straight into the salesman’s eyes.“Si..Sir.” The salesman stuttered, feeling too scared. “This beggar tried to steal…”“He was lying. I didn't steal any…” Sebastian interrupted the salesman.“Enough both of you.” The store owner growled, shutting both their mouths. The salesman lowered his gaze, assuming now Sebastian would get punishment from his boss and he would enjoy the show but to his surprise the table turned in Sebastian's favour.“You're fired.” The store owner declared and everyone around gasped.“What ? NO SIR…but…” The salesman looked up, not believing his own ears.“I apologise Sir for the inconvenience caused to you by this foolish employee of ours. But we know how to correct our mistakes.” The owner bowed his head in front of Sebastian. The owner signalled his guards to leave Sebastian's hand and they did and walked outside wh
27. The Attempt
Sebastian stared at the dark screen of his new phone. The call lasted less than a minute. She just warned him with one sentence and then the line went silent. He pressed the call button immediately. The line rang once before an automated voice answered.“The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable.”He frowned and tried again, still unavailable. He tried a third time and received the same result. He lowered the phone slowly, his thoughts racing. “Evelyn..” For weeks she had vanished without a word. Now she resurfaced only long enough to tell him someone had tried to access Box -417 before disappearing again.Something was definitely wrong and he needed to check it on his own. He can't take any risk with Evelyn's safety. He grabbed his backpack from the chair. David's notebook, the brass key, the Graystone token, and the faded photograph were all still inside. He couldn't leave it alone since he knew how dangerous it could be when his enemies were keeping an eye on hi
28. The Man David Trusted
Saturday arrived beneath a gray sky. Sebastian spent the morning the way he had learned to spend every morning since finding his father's notebook –with discipline. He reviewed the auction listings over breakfast, marked two properties worth investigating next week, and transferred another small amount of money into his investment account. Forty-eight thousand three hundred and sixty dollars had seemed like a fortune only days ago. Now he understood it differently. It wasn't wealth but a working capital. His father had once told him, Money sitting still grows old. Money given a purpose grows with you.As Sebastian finally understood what his father had meant, a faint smile appeared on his lips. While working and checking everything double, Sebastian didn't forget about Evelyn. He tried her number umpteenth times but it was still out of reach which irritated and worried Sebastian at the same time. “When she'll return, I'll definitely ask for another contact to approach her in case of
29. One Step Too Late.
The words hung in the room like a storm cloud. “They are moving faster than I expected.”Sebastian's mind immediately returned to the repair shop. The rusted shutters. The fresh MetroLink utility trench. The mechanic who insisted the property hadn't truly been abandoned. The supervisor who had accidentally revealed Phase Three before its public announcement.Blackstone had already bought it. They didn't buy it next month or after the public announcement but today.“They knew.” Sebastian said quietly.Marcus gave a single nod. “They always know earlier than everyone else.”Cole closed the office door behind him. “I confirmed it ten minutes ago. The sale wasn't public. One of my contacts at City Records called me.”Sebastian looked at him. “When did the purchase happen ?”“This afternoon.” Cole answered.“Who bought it?” Sebastian asked.“A holding company.” Cole slid a printed document across the table. “Officially the buyer is North River Commercial Holdings.”Sebastian scanned the p
30. Thinking Ahead.
The journey home felt longer than usual. Rainwater glistened beneath the streetlight as Sebastian walked through the quiet streets with an umbrella in his hand. Marcus’s final words refused to leave his mind. “They're no longer searching blindly.” Someone else had gone to the bank and now knew Box 417 mattered. That changed everything. Until now Sebastian had believed he was chasing his father's past and now someone was chasing him.His apartment was dark as usual as he returned. He locked the door behind him, placed his backpack on the table before removing David's notebook with the same care someone might reserve for an old family heirloom. The worn black cover had become softer from constant use, and several pages had begun to curl at the corners. The apartment greeted him with familiar silence. A month ago, that silence had felt lonely. Now it felt peaceful. He sat down and flipped to a blank page. Instead of reading, he uncapped a pen. Slowly, he wrote three lines.Information
