SABOTAGE ON WHEELS
"Valis, get down!" I roared, my boots skidding through the thick purple dust on the platform as I threw my shoulder straight into Vane's chest, driving him backward into the iron railings."You can't stop the beam, Collins!" Vane shrieked, his voice hysterical as he swung his heavy staff in a wild, blinding arc that clipped my collarbone, sending a sharp wave of hot pain shooting down my left arm. "The anchor is locked on the capital! It's already feeding!""Miller!" I screamed over the deafening, bone-shattering roar of the floating monolith overhead. "The steering housing! Jam the drive axle or we're all dead!"Across the vast, vibrating chamber, Miller dragged his shattered leg out from under the broken iron catwalk. His face was covered in fresh blood, his coat torn to shreds, but his gray eyes burned with a terrifying, unyielding madness."Valis, help me up!" Miller coughed, spitting a mouthful of dark crimson onto the iron floorboards as he reached for a fallen structural beam.
THE LEAP OF DEATH
"Jump! We have to jump now!" I screamed, my voice tearing raw against the deafening screech of grinding metal as the giant rollers sheared apart against the cliff edge. "I can't reach the ledge, Dad!" Valis shrieked, her body dangling over the open air as the tail end of the fortress began to tilt wildly into the abyss."Harrison! Catch her!" Miller roared from the crumbling rock shelf above, his bloody fingers digging into the roots of a dead pine tree as he held himself on the precipice. "The main deck is snapping in half!"Vane staggered up behind me, his silver robes torn, his face a grotesque mask of hysterical, fanatical fury. "You destroyed it! You destroyed my grand monument!""I destroyed your madness!" I bellowed, turning and slamming my blade straight into his wrist, sending his heavy iron staff spinning off into the open void below.Vane howled in pain, but he lunged forward with clawed fingers, wrapping his hands around my neck. "If I fall, Warlord, you burn with me!""N
THE ECHO OF THE CORE
We thought we had buried the nightmare in the river, but some curses don't die when you break their chains, they just multiply."Harrison, look at the water," Miller panted, leaning heavily against a jagged rock, his bloodied fingers digging into his makeshift crutch. "The smoke... it isn't clearing.""It's just steam from the wreckage," I said, my voice raspy as I held Valis tightly against my side, my heart still hammering against my ribs from the terrifying fall. "The anchor detonated. We all saw the geyser.""Dad, no," Valis whispered, her small voice trembling with a cold, sickening horror as she stared down into the deep, shadowy chasm. "The white light... it didn't dissolve the purple fire. It split it.""What do you mean, split it?" I asked, a wave of dark, suffocating dread instantly washing over my chest."Listen," she whimpered, pointing a dirt-stained finger down into the ruined hull of the Dread-Engine.Through the quiet roar of the canyon river, a low, wet cough echoed of
THE NORTHERN RIDGE
Valis pulled her heavy wool blanket tighter around her shoulders, her small face pale from the biting cold, her lips chattered as she looked up at me. "You don't have to lie to me, Dad. I know how many of them are left.""I'm not lying," I said, leaning over to rub her frozen hands between my rough, scarred palms. "I'm just tired. I look at you, and I feel like I'm dragging you through a nightmare that never ends.""You aren't dragging me," she said fiercely, her violet eyes flashing in the dim firelight with that familiar, stubborn spark. "I chose to come with you. I'm not that scared little girl in the glass tower anymore."Across the small ring of stones, Corvus adjusted her thick leather mantle, her face grim as she checked the iron latch on her crossbow. "We need to move before dawn. The northern signal beam is getting stronger, Harrison. The temperature dropped twenty degrees the moment we crossed the ridge line.""Miller and Naya should be halfway to the southern riverlands by
THE FROST WOLVES
"Don't shoot until they leap!" I screamed, my voice barely cutting through the roaring blizzard as I shoved Valis behind my hips and raised my steel blade."I can't hit what I can't see, Harrison!" Corvus yelled back, her fingers frozen stiff against the trigger of her heavy crossbow, her eyes wide as shadowy forms circled us in the whiteout."Dad, there's something wrong with them!" Valis shrieked, her hands flickering with wild, unstable bursts of white kinetic energy. "They aren't hunting for food! They don't have hearts!""They're Skar's scouts," a rough, familiar voice shouted from the blinding snow behind us.I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat. "Miller?"Out of the howling gale, Miller slammed into our defensive circle, his breath ragged, his coat caked in thick ice, his face pale from agony as he leaned heavily on a blood-stained pine crutch."I told you I wasn't letting you take the northern ridge alone, you idiot!" Miller wheezed, coughing violently as he drew his
THE BATTLE OF THE PEAK
"Corvus, get Miller behind that granite ledge right now!" I screamed, my voice cutting through the whistling blizzard as I threw myself into the snow, my sword raised to catch the blinding flare of purple light."I'm not going anywhere, Harrison!" Miller barked from the dirt, his face covered in dark crimson as he dragged his useless leg toward a fallen iron-tipped spear. "I can still drive a point into that beast's belly!""You'll get crushed into meat, Miller!" Corvus yelled back, grabbing his heavy wool collar and dragging him backwards against his will into the shelter of the rocks. "Let Harrison draw the charge!""Look at them crawling in the ice," Skar boomed from atop his massive, iron-armored mount, his voice rolling over the peak like a localized avalanche. "The great Warlord of Oakhaven, fighting over scrap metal with a cripple and a child!""I came for the shard, Skar!" I shouted back, stepping directly onto the ice, every muscle in my legs burning as the frost-tainted wind
MESSAGE FROM MARCUS
"Harrison, look up!" Corvus shouted, pointing her trembling hand toward the high canopy of the thawing pine forest.A massive grey courier eagle dropped out of the morning mist, its majestic wings ragged, scorched black, and dripping crimson onto the green grass before it crashed violently into the dirt three feet from my boots."Gods above," Miller whispered, pushing himself forward on his hands and knees, ignoring the sharp pain in his shattered leg as he reached for the bird's leather leg tube. "That's Marcus's personal herald. He only releases these when a fortress falls."Valis knelt beside the dying bird, her small, warm hands softly cradling its trembling head as a pale white light flickered from her fingers, trying desperately to ease its agony. "It flew straight through the purple energy, Dad. Its feathers are completely burnt.""Give me the cylinder, Miller," I commanded, my chest tightening so hard I could barely draw breath as I unclasped the tiny silver tube from the bird
THE PARTING ON THE CROSSROAD
"You don't have to do this alone, Miller," I said, my voice cracking as I pulled our horses to a sharp halt where the muddy trail split in two. "Let me come with you to the sea-coves first. It will only take half a day.""And let Marcus burn in the capital?" Miller spat, wincing as he shifted his crushed leg over his saddle horn. "Don't you dare start being soft now, Harrison. Not when we're this close.""It isn't being soft!" I shouted, stepping up to his stirrup, grabbing his leather reins so hard my knuckles turned white. "Look at yourself! You can barely hold a sword, your face is covered in dried blood, and you're riding into a trap!""I've been riding into traps with you for fifteen years!" Miller barked, letting out a rough, breathless laugh that turned into a painful cough. "Why should today be any different?""Because this time I won't be there to pull you out!" I yelled, tears burning hot behind my eyes. "If you fall in those coves, Miller... if that eastern warlord takes yo
THE IRON COAST
"Keep your boots off the rusted metal, Valis," I whispered, holding my breath as we slipped through the jagged breach in the naval base's outer hull. "Dad, the water is rising," she whimpered, her hands trembling as cold sea brine swirled past her ankles. "I can hear the pipes screaming under the floor." "I hear them too," I said, drawing my sword with a silent, methodical pull. "Just watch the shadows. Corvina's guard doesn't patrol on foot. They wait in the dark." "You shouldn't have come to the coast, Harrison," a slick, icy voice echoed through the iron chamber above us. I snapped my blade up, shoving Valis behind my shoulder as a tall figure emerged on the rusted catwalk twenty feet above the flooded deck. Lady Corvina stood shrouded in navy leather, her skin unnaturally pale, her dark eyes glittering with a cold, predatory intellect. In her right hand, she held a heavy bras
DEPTH OF THE SOUL
"You won't let go," I said, my voice thick with raw terror as I held her tiny, trembling shoulders, watching the black depths swirl around us like liquid iron. "Look at me, Valis. Ignore the pressure. Ignore the cold. Just focus on the core.""Dad, look out below!" she shrieked, her violet eyes widening in absolute horror as the light from her hands reflected off the murky depths.Down in the dark abyss, four shadowy forms drifted out of the flooded vault, their massive limbs wrapped in heavy bronze armor, their lifeless eyes glowing with that same dead purple fire. Corvina's underwater guardians had felt the intrusion, and they were rising fast."I have to split the air!" Valis gasped, her arms trembling wildly as she shoved her right hand upward, her forehead slick with cold sweat. "I'm sending you back to the hatch! You can't fight them in the water!""Valis, no! Don't leave me out of the bubble!" I roared, reaching for her fingers, but before I could
