Liv stood on the marble porch long after the heavy gates had closed, shutting away the fading sound of her father’s angry shouts. She slowly walked back into the mansion, but her mind remained elsewhere.Where did Kaedric go?It had only been a few days since he returned to her life and pulled her and Astrid out of suffering. For six years, Liv had gone to sleep wondering whether he was dead. She had woken every morning afraid that she would never see him again. Now he had disappeared without telling her where he was going. There was no message. No explanation. He had simply left.A familiar fear entered her heart. What if this is like before? What if he does not return?Liv drew in a slow breath and forced the thought away. She climbed the stairs and walked toward Astrid’s bedchamber. The curtains had been drawn open, filling the room with warm morning sunlight. Three estate maids stood around Astrid, helping her wash and braid her long dark hair.Liv paused at the door.Only a short

The maids gasped.Solveig gave them a secretive smile.“Lord Kaedric prefers to keep his personal affairs quiet. You should not question it further.”“Of course, my Lady,” one maid replied quickly.Another maid smiled. “Lord Kaedric certainly has good eyes for women. First Lady Liv, and now Lady Solveig.”Liv felt a vein in her forehead throb. “I beg your pardon?”Solveig jumped and quickly turned around. The four maids bowed.“Lady Liv!”Liv walked toward them, her eyes fixed on Solveig.“Did you just tell these women that you are Kaedric’s mistress?”Solveig forced a small smile. “It was the easiest answer.”“The easiest answer?”“If I told them the truth, they would ask more questions.”“So you decided to claim my man?”The maids looked at one another and slowly moved backward. One of them tried to help.“We meant no disrespect, Lady Liv. We only said Lord Kaedric has good eyes. Both you and Lady Solveig are very beautiful.”“Do not compare me to her,” Liv snapped. “We are nothing

Stormwall Keep was already in chaos when Kaedric arrived. The war horns had been sounding since sunrise. Wounded soldiers covered the lower courtyard while healers rushed between them with bowls of hot water, clean cloth, and healing salves. Some men were covered in burns. Others had black marks spreading across their skin.Smoke rose from the northern wall, and every few moments, something heavy struck the other side of the fortress.BOOM!The ground shook beneath Kaedric’s boots.“Hold him down!” a healer shouted as one wounded soldier began kicking against the ground. “Arghh, somebody hold his arm before he tears the wound open!”Kaedric moved past them and entered the main tower. Two guards saw him coming and quickly pushed open the doors to the command hall. The noise inside was even worse.“The western bridge is gone!” one commander shouted.“Then send men through the lower pass!”“What lower pass? Svartheim took it before dawn!”“Humph! And whose fault was that?”“Forget whose

“I can open it,” Sigrid said. For a moment, the command hall went quiet. Then the First Warden slammed one hand against the broken table.“Nonsense! That road was sealed after the last Svartheim attack. It will remain sealed.”General Bronn turned toward him. “Five hundred soldiers are trapped outside, and you want to throw away the only road that can reach them?”“And what do you suggest?” the First Warden snapped. “Should we open a hidden passage beneath Stormwall and invite Svartheim into the fortress? There are more than ten thousand people behind these walls.”“Those men outside have protected them for years!”“And I will not place the whole fortress in danger to save one battalion.”“They are still alive!” Bronn struck the table so hard that the carved markers jumped. “Stop speaking about them as if we have already buried them!”The First Warden stepped closer, showing no fear. “I am speaking as the man responsible for everyone inside Stormwall. You command soldiers, General. Yo

Sigrid moved through the lower halls so quickly that the others had to run to keep up with her.The warning horn from the western wall had stopped, but its final broken call remained in Kaedric’s mind. Nobody knew whether the soldiers’ shield had completely fallen or whether the signal itself had been destroyed.Neither answer was good. They entered the oldest tower in Stormwall and rushed down a narrow staircase. General Bronn followed with the four soldiers he had chosen, but before they reached the first turn, another horn began to scream somewhere above them.BOOM!The whole tower shook. Bronn slammed into the wall, and loose stones crashed down the stairs behind them.“Arghh!” One soldier covered his head as a piece of stone struck his shoulder. “They have reached the tower!”“No,” Bronn said, staring upward with a pale face. “That sound came from the western ward.”Kaedric felt his chest tighten. Five hundred soldiers were still outside with Svartheim closing around them. They h

Kaedric stopped suddenly inside the Rootway, and Sigrid nearly walked into his back.“What is wrong?”The tunnel had divided into three paths. The roots inside the left passage were dry and grey, while thick black thorns blocked the middle road. The final path disappeared into darkness.Bronn turned toward Sigrid. “Which one?”She looked between the three paths before shaking her head. “I do not know.”Bronn’s eyes widened. “You brought us down here, and now you do not know?”“The roots have moved!”“My men do not have time for moving roots!”Sigrid turned on him. “Then return upstairs and shout at the mountain until it obeys you!”Bronn stepped closer. “Woman—”“Enough,” Kaedric said. The single word silenced both of them.Kaedric closed his eyes and tried to ignore the tiredness pressing against his body. He had already fought, crossed realms, and used more power than he should have. Every part of him wanted to stop. But five hundred soldiers did not have time for him to rest.At fi

A strange feeling spread through Kaedric’s body.He could feel every living person around him through the frozen ground—the frightened soldiers behind him, the wounded lying in the snow, and the mercenaries closing in around them. But the fourteen Svartheim officers felt different. They were like holes in the land.Kaedric opened his eyes and looked directly at one of them.General Bronn tightened his grip on his sword. “Do not listen to that arrogant dog, my lord.”The enemy commander laughed. “Is the Guardian so weak that his general must speak for him?”Kaedric ignored the insult and turned slightly toward Bronn. “When I move, protect the wounded.”Bronn’s anger changed into a hard smile. “Gladly.”The commander frowned. “What are you whispering about?”Kaedric looked at him. “Nothing that will help you.”The man’s face twisted with fury. He raised his black axe and roared, “Kill them!”His warriors attacked from every side.Kaedric vanished.FLASH!He appeared behind the nearest S

The mercenaries stared at the dead man who had promised to protect them.Their Svartheim officers were gone. Their commander was dead. Now the Guardian of Midgard stood before them with blood running down his blade.Everyone understood what would happen next. One captain threw down his sword and fell to his knees.“Mercy, Lord Guardian!”Weapons dropped across the snow.“We surrender!”“Please spare us!”“We will never serve Svartheim again!”Another man dropped so quickly that his knees struck the frozen ground with a painful crack. “Accept us as your men! We will fight for you!”The mercenary captain pressed his forehead into the snow. “We will do anything you command. Please, my lord. Allow us to serve you.”Kaedric looked at the wounded soldiers behind him. Then he looked toward the broken bridge and the ruined ward-stones.“My men?”The disgust in his voice made the captain tremble.“No,” Kaedric said. “You have not earned that honour.”The captain pressed his face even lower. “F

The doors to Lawkeeper Vargr’s office flew open so hard that they struck the wall.“My lord! My lord, something terrible is happening!”Vargr looked up from the scroll in his hands.Four estate maids rushed into the room at once. Their faces were pale, their hair was scattered, and all four of them were speaking over one another.“Lady Liv and Lady Solveig—”“They have gone to the northern tower—”“They are going to use the wind-gliders—”“Someone must stop them before they fall into the chasm!”Vargr stared at them for a moment. Then he calmly placed his scroll on the table.“I did not hear a single useful word.”The head maid rushed forward. “My lord, there is no time! They are about to—”“You will have to remain calm and speak clearly if you want me to understand what you are saying.”The maids looked at him as if he had lost his mind.“My lord,” one of them said, almost crying, “did you not hear the part where we said someone could fall from a mountain?”“I heard four frightened c

Liv stood beside her sky-rift glider, pretending that she was calm.Inside her head, she was boiling. What rubbish!Solveig had appeared from nowhere, entered Kaedric’s home, dressed herself like a princess, and then told the maids that she was his mistress. His mistress!Liv had waited six years for Kaedric to return. She had raised their daughter alone. She had cried over him, prayed for him, and wondered every night whether he was still alive. Now this silver-haired woman thought she could simply smile at a few servants and take her place?A small voice inside Liv’s mind told her that she was being ridiculous. Solveig had already explained why she lied. They both knew she was hiding from her father and did not want the servants asking questions.Liv ignored that voice. If she remained quiet, the maids would remember this. They would whisper about it later. The next time another beautiful woman arrived at the estate, they might welcome her inside and forget to tell Liv.No.Liv was
