Sarah stood in the middle of the warm corridor, her back to the sealed door, the muffled sound of Greg's fists pounding against reinforced steel fading behind her like a dream she was already forgetting. The warmth wrapped around her frozen body and squeezed the tension from her muscles one layer at a time.Marco walked past her without urgency and began setting food on the table. A steaming bowl of ramen with sliced pork floating on top. Two hard boiled eggs, perfectly peeled. Three bottles of mineral water lined up like soldiers. And then he reached into the system warehouse and pulled out a roast chicken leg, golden brown and glistening, the smell hitting Sarah's nostrils with the force of a punch she never saw coming."Eat." He set the chicken leg directly in front of her and pulled out the chair.Sarah's jaw locked. Her eyes darted to the sealed door behind her, then to the food, then to Marco's calm, patient face. The refusal was right there, sitting on the tip of her tongue,

Victor and his basement team reached the reinforced door and stopped. The flashlight beam moved across the surface of the steel, tracing bolts the size of fists, hinges buried inside the frame, and a thickness that made the door look less like a household fixture and more like something pulled from the entrance of a nuclear bunker."Jesus." One of the men pressed his palm flat against the steel and felt nothing but cold, immovable mass. "This thing has to be six inches thick. Maybe more. What kind of person puts a door like this on a residential basement?""The kind of person who has something worth protecting behind it." Victor ran his fingers along the frame, studying the seams, his mind already turning the observation into fuel. "Think about that for a second. A man who spent this much money sealing one entrance has ten times more supplies inside than any of us guessed. This isn't a pantry. This is a vault. And everything in it becomes ours tonight."The men exchanged looks, hunger

"Pull back! Everyone pull back to the shelter!" The lead man grabbed the injured sledgehammer wielder and dragged him back under the bed frame. The group huddled together, ten men crammed beneath a structure that was already groaning under its own weight, the toxic rain hissing against the plastic sheeting overhead. They were about to retreat when a window opened on the second floor. Warm light spilled out into the toxic fog, and Marco's silhouette appeared in the frame, leaning on the sill with the casual posture of a man watching fireworks from his balcony."Leaving so soon?" His voice carried down clearly through the still, poisoned air. "You went through all this trouble hauling a bed frame through the rain and you're giving up after one window? That's disappointing. Even for a pack of stray dogs chasing a car they could never catch.""YOU!" The lead man pointed up at the window, rage overriding every rational thought. "Come down here and face us like a man!""I am facing you." Ma

Forty percent gone in one week. By the time the rain stops, that number drops to maybe a hundred and fifty. Maybe less.He closed the stats and checked his messages. Two notifications waiting.Hey Marco. Sophie's satellite internet is still working so I can actually send messages. We're safe up here. The fortress is holding perfectly. Walls are solid, generator is running, water filtration is online, and we have enough supplies for months. Sophie says hello and also says she told everyone so. I'm starting to think she might be the sanest person I've ever met. Stay safe down there. Giorgia's message came with a photo of her sitting by a fireplace, wrapped in a b

Marco looked at him for one full second. Then he tilted the barrel slightly to the left and fired. No sound came from the gun itself. The round deployed silently through the system interface, crossing the distance between barrel and target at the speed of a live bullet. The man standing directly behind Victor dropped like a puppet with its strings cut, a small hole in his forehead and an expression of mild surprise frozen on his face before he even hit the floor.Victor's knees hit the concrete so hard the impact echoed through the entire garage. His face was the color of printer paper, his burned left hand shaking uncontrollably at his side."Still think it's a toy?" Marco lowered the barrel until it pointed directly at the bridge of Victor's nose. "I can fire again if you need more convincing. I have plenty of ammunition and, honestly, plenty of patience.""Please." Victor's voice cracked clean in half, the confident warlord from the candlelit briefing dissolving into something smal
