Chapter 41
Los Angeles…For the residents of the tenement, it was the most frightening night they were ever privy to. For the firefighters on the scene, it was a raging inferno beyond any level of control. For the multiple news teams on site, it was a ratings machine. For the Crusaders, it was just another night. Red Cross stood within the barriers keeping the gathered news crews and onlooking civilians away, healing the coughing residents as they were brought down from the rooftop by Nocturne's colonies. Inside the building, Kenseijin and Jimmy Nomad found the injured and the trapped before escorting them to be ferried from the ceiling by Nocturne. The ferocity of the flames was matched only by the stench of the smoke inside the complex. Luckily, Kenseijin was protected from both by the faceplate of his helmet, as was Jimmy Nomad by the neckerchief over his mouth and nose. The trapped civilians lacked any such luxury. Kenseijin weaved through fiery debris, not cutting through any of it for fear
Chapter 42
Two suited guards stood dutifully at the front door of the mansion belonging to retired mobster Omar Oliver. The quiet of the night was broken by two gunshots in split-second succession, killing both guards. On the walls of the front gate, the shooter stood with smoking revolvers in each hand. He wore a black cowboy hat, his face obscured in the shadows cast by the moonlight, and his neckerchief hung loosely around his neck on his long, buttoned-up black coat. His pants and boots matched the dark colour scheme of his ensemble, making him blend perfectly with the background of the night sky. He jumped down from the wall and sprinted towards the front doors, aware that he had alerted the other guards inside. He opened his coat, revealing a small army's worth of ammo hidden within, and reloaded his revolvers with the bullets inside. Without hesitation, he burst through the front door and into the bright white entrance room, outstretching his arms to shoot down two moving guards. From aro

Los Angeles…James hesitated to press the buzzer at the entrance of the apartment complex. Every instinct told him to cut and run, that it wasn't worth it, but he eventually just did it. Seconds later, he heard the voice of the person he sought to meet."Yeah?" He heard the brightness of the voice on the other end and once again hesitated to speak."Hey, Nick, uh…it's James." A brief silence took place."Okay then." The change in mood was obvious in the sound of his voice. "Come on up." The door unlocked and James entered the building. The elevator ride up gave him ample time to figure out what he wanted to say, or at least get an idea of it. He made his way to the familiar door numbered 7G and knocked. A man with mop-like black hair and a youthful face opened up, and with slight resignation in eyes, gestured him inside. James stepped inside, taking in the apartment's layout. It had changed significantly since he'd last seen it."It's a lot cleaner." He awkwardly commented."Yeah, wel

Crusaders' base…Kon paced around his dorm, muttering to himself the same sentence over and over again. He kept an eye and ear aimed at the door so that nobody caught him doing so and occasionally readjusted his hair. His stomach churned with an indescribable feeling he hadn't felt since he was in high school. Eventually, he gave up on the prospect of strategy and decided to wing it. He boldly stepped out and looked into the living room. Gunk sat watching a documentary detailing the First Age of Superheroes, while Lizzy stood in the kitchen staring at the slowly burning bacon she was attempting to cook in the hopes of emulating Andrew's famous breakfasts. Kon purposefully made his way towards her, intentionally letting instinct take over and blocking out all rational thought."Lizzy." He said, drawing her gaze."What's up?" Her bright blue eyes met his own, her straight crimson hair hanging like curtains at the sides of her spotless white face, and suddenly those rational thoughts kic

The next day…Hikaru and James were the only Crusaders left at the base. Umi sat in her room studying her English, as in the living room the TV blasted innocuous morning shows. The uncomfortable silence made the distance between the two men seem further, despite the fact that Hikaru merely stood in the kitchen and James sat on the couch. After what seemed like an eternity of quiet, Hikaru spoke up."So…you've become quite the idol recently." James was surprised to hear his teammate's voice."Suppose I have.""It was pretty brave of you, saving that girl the way you did." James chose his words cautiously as he carried on the conversation."Thank you." Hikaru decided to drop the small talk and get down to brass tacks."There's something about it that's lingering in my mind, though. Something…bothersome." James reeled back slowly as he listened. "You weren't alone in there, James. You could have had Nocturne use a colony to pull the two of you out of there and not risked your life and th

Los Angeles…The sweating, heaving James burst through the unlocked door to find the apartment in shambles. Pieces of broken plate and some food scraps littered the floor before him. The glass door to the balcony had been shattered, and the gentle draft played gently with the flowing, almost translucent curtains. He dashed to the bedroom, finding it devoid of Nick and El Bandido's presence, just as expected. He ran his hands over his face as he was flooded with an unmatched sense of overwhelming dread. The ringing of his phone kept him from suffering too greatly, and he once again saw the caller ID as Nick's. Under any other circumstances, he'd be filled with relief. As he raised the phone to his ear, he could almost hear the sadistic smirk spread on Bandido's face."Where is he, Luis?" James immediately asked, stern anger dancing on his words."In due time, old friend." Bandido's voice echoed through the speaker. "For now, something greater is afoot.""What do you want?" Bandido laug

Lizzy stared up at the holograms of planets as she traversed the Andromeda Exploration Exhibit. Kon followed a little further behind, hands in pockets, watching with a smile as she wandered in enchantment. The longer he stared, the more his feelings for her grew. Lizzy spun around and faced him with a pure-as-snow smile, and she gave her own ocular assessment as his head snapped around in an effort to make it seem like he was admiring the globe of Novos at his right. The natural beauty in his chiselled facial structure appealed to her. His relaxed posture made him look no less tall, another factor of his look that she liked. She didn't care much for people's styling, but there was something engaging and endearing in the way he dressed. She noticed the amount of attention he'd clearly put into his look and decided she'd address it as she came to a stop."Your hair looks nice." Kon looked back, smiling with slight embarrassment."Yours too.""Oh, I didn't even brush it this morning. But
Chapter 48
Los Angeles…James walked out of the apartment building, his eyes dashing around the street in a paranoid manner for reasons only he knew. In the waist of his jeans, concealed by his shirt, he carried the present that awaited him in the vacant apartment from which he came: two revolvers, paired with a stockpile of lead bullets. Moments ago, he received another phone call from Bandido, saying the two would 'pick up where they left off' in a message with obvious meaning to James. He moved as fast as he could past the alleyway, but couldn't escape the hands that gripped his shoulders before spinning him around and slamming him into the brick wall. His hands moved instinctively for the guns in his jacket, and he swiftly raised the barrels into the face of his attacker. Then he realised who he was dealing with, and stopped, prompting his assailant to quickly snatch the weapons."What are you doing with these?" He asked."Good to see you keepin' that paranoia in check, Hikaru," James said.
Chapter 49
New Mexican desert…With trepidation in their steps, Jimmy Nomad and Kenseijin stalked towards the entrance to the mine that stood unbecoming of the desert landscape that surrounded it. The steel frame of the closed metal door sat rusted and dirtied within the large rock, and around the two heroes, small stone formations stood at chest height. The dust under the heroes' feet carried the orange colour of the slowly setting sun above them. The two Crusaders moved with their hands hovering over their waists, anticipating the inevitable moment where they'd draw their weapons. Until that moment, Kenseijin saw fit to answer some lingering questions he had towards Jimmy Nomad."Why would he take Nick?" He asked. Jimmy was a bit slow to acknowledge the question, being buried in concentration from the moment they teleported to the mine."What?""You and Nick haven't been together in over a decade. If El Bandido wanted to get his revenge on you and prove to the world you aren't a changed man, w
Chapter 50
New Mexican desert…Nine minutes were left on the clock for Jimmy Nomad as he prowled across the large rock in search of El Bandido. His search ended when Bandido tumbled out from beneath the formation, turned around as he stood, and fired up at his opponent. Jimmy spun sideways, narrowly avoiding the bullets, and leapt forward off the rock to land behind a smaller stone structure. He grunted as he hit the ground shoulder-first, but he managed to quickly pull himself up to lean his back against the rock he chose for cover. El Bandido swiftly found protection for himself as he reloaded his revolvers, noting the low amount of ammo he carried in his coat. He shot up from behind the rock with his weapons raised, but the moment he did so, an already standing Jimmy Nomad shot him in the right shoulder. In a spin, Bandido fell to the ground, a scarlet mist bursting off the black coat upon the bullet's impact. Jimmy sprinted to his fallen target as fast as possible, bounding over the rock his
