CHAPTER 11: WHAT STRATEGY COSTS
Three seconds was not enough time to think of a plan. It was enough time to notice one thing, and Aurelius forced himself to notice it anyway, because noticing it was the only thing standing between him and whatever came next. The chains. Still looped loose around both of his opponent's wrists, recently removed from the manacles but never fully cleared away, dragging faint trails through the sand with every heavy step.Aurelius threw himself sideways instead of backward this time, and the massive fist that should have caught him square in the chest instead连passed close enough to tear fabric from his shoulder, close enough that he felt the wind of it against his skin. He did not stop moving. He dropped low, scooping up a length of loose chain trailing from his opponent's wrist before the man could fully recover his balance, and yanked with everything he had left.It should not have worked. A man that size should have shrugged off the pull entirely. But momentum, once committed in one d
CHAPTER 12: BROKEN CLEAN
The Warden gave him four days to recover before throwing him back into the arena, and Aurelius understood, the moment he saw his next opponent, that those four days had been a kindness meant entirely for someone else's benefit, not his own."Careful with this one," a guard muttered, close enough that Aurelius caught the warning despite it clearly not being intended for him. "Fourth tier champion. Doesn't lose."His opponent moved onto the sand with none of the theater Gorrath had brought, no posturing, no wasted words, simply a quiet, economical stillness that reminded Aurelius uncomfortably of his own father's stance in the training yard, years and a lifetime ago. Lean where Gorrath had been broad, precise where the branded fighter had been brutal, this man carried himself like violence was simply a trade he had mastered thoroughly enough to no longer need to think about it consciously."You beat the beast Vantor sent," the man said, voice calm, almost conversational. "Clever trick w
CHAPTER 13: A DEBT NEITHER ASKED FOR
Renner's fist never landed.A shape crashed into him from the side, hard enough to drive him bodily into the stone wall, and for one disoriented moment Aurelius could not make sense of what he was seeing through the haze of pain and exhaustion pulling at the edges of his vision."Get off him," Kaelen's voice snarled, low and furious, nothing like the dry, measured tone Aurelius had grown used to hearing through the cell wall.Renner recovered fast, shoving back hard enough to send Kaelen stumbling, and his two companions closed in immediately, boxing Kaelen between them in the cramped space of the cell. Aurelius tried to push himself upright, tried to make his battered body do something, anything, useful, but his arms shook uselessly beneath him, refusing to carry his weight."This isn't your fight, old man," Renner said, circling slightly, voice tight with real anger now rather than the mocking confidence he had shown earlier. "Stay out of it and maybe I forget you interrupted.""Was
CHAPTER 14: WHAT THE FIRE TOOK
The Warden's chamber felt colder than Aurelius remembered, though he suspected that had less to do with the room itself than with the sight of Renner kneeling near the far wall, one eye swollen shut, flanked by two guards who did not look particularly sympathetic to his complaints."Explain," the Warden said, not bothering to look up from his ledger, "why three of my prisoners required medical attention within an hour of each other, all claiming a different version of events.""He attacked me first," Renner said, jabbing a finger toward Kaelen. "Broke into my business without provocation.""Your business," Kaelen said flatly, "was breaking into an injured man's cell with two others to finish what a scheduled fight couldn't."The Warden finally looked up, gaze moving slowly between the three of them, weighing something Aurelius could not begin to guess at."Interesting," he said. "Because my guards tell me cell doors do not simply open themselves."Aurelius felt his stomach tighten, aw
CHAPTER 15: MARKED
Life in the days that followed took on a strange, watchful rhythm, and it took Aurelius longer than it should have to realize the watching had changed shape entirely. It was not the ordinary attention that came from winning fights, the sideways glances, the careful distance other prisoners gave him now, the low murmur of his name passed between people who had learned to fear or admire him in equal measure. This was quieter, more deliberate, guards lingering a few seconds too long outside his cell during their rounds, overseers he did not recognize appearing at the edges of his training sessions, watching with the particular focus of men taking careful, private notes."You've noticed it too," Kaelen said one evening, voice low through the wall between their cells. "The extra eyes.""Since the Warden's chamber," Aurelius said. "Since the fight with Renner.""Since longer than that, I think," Kaelen said. "Since you walked out of that arena against a man twice your size and lived to tell
CHAPTER 16: WHISPERS OF VARKAINE
The name traveled faster than Aurelius expected, faster than seemed possible for a place with no windows, no messengers, nothing but stone corridors and guards who mostly cared about their own comfort over anyone else's business. It reached the lowest tiers first, according to Kaelen, whispered among prisoners barely strong enough to survive their own matches, let alone concern themselves with politics above their station. Down there, the reaction was simple fear, the kind bred from stories told by grandparents about a bloodline so old and so feared that entire kingdoms had once bent themselves around avoiding its displeasure."They think you'll bring the wardens' full attention down on all of them," Kaelen reported, after one of his careful, quiet rounds of listening. "Guilt by proximity. A few are already asking to be moved to different cell blocks, just to put distance between themselves and whatever trouble your name might invite."The middle tiers reacted differently, Kaelen said
CHAPTER 17: THOSE WHO WANT HIM DEAD
The warning came from an unlikely source, a thin, nervous prisoner named Todder who worked the kitchens and had never once spoken directly to Aurelius before that morning."Don't eat the stew today," Todder muttered, passing close during the meal line, not looking at him directly. "Whatever you do. Not the stew."He was gone before Aurelius could ask why, disappearing back into the kitchen's steam and noise, leaving Aurelius standing in line with his empty bowl and a cold, familiar unease settling into his chest. He remembered Kaelen's earliest lesson clearly enough. Never eat first. Never accept food from someone you have not seen eat from the same pot. He had followed that rule instinctively ever since, though today, watching the line shuffle forward toward the steaming pot ahead of him, he found himself paying far closer attention than usual to exactly who filled their bowl, and exactly how eagerly, or reluctantly, the servers themselves handled the ladle. The server today was new,
CHAPTER 18: THOSE WHO WANT HIM USED
Sorrell found him again two days after the poisoning, this time waiting deliberately outside the training yard rather than falling into step beside him mid walk, patient in a way that made Aurelius immediately more wary rather than less."I heard about the stew," Sorrell said, without preamble. "Ugly business. Fear makes men clumsy, though. Poison in a communal pot, hoping the blame lands anywhere but themselves. Amateurs.""You have a point somewhere in there, or are you just here to comment on other people's methods."Sorrell's mouth curved into something that was not quite a smile. "I'm here because you're running out of time to decide who you'd rather owe something to. The ones who want you dead just proved they're willing to risk collateral damage to get it done. Seems to me that changes the math considerably in favor of the people who'd actually prefer you stay breathing.""Your people.""My contacts," Sorrell corrected. "Not mine, exactly. But interested, certainly. Interested
CHAPTER 19: WHAT LIES BENEATH
Aurelius did not answer Thane's question, and Thane did not wait around for one, disappearing through the hall's doorway with his two companions before Aurelius could decide whether pursuing him would accomplish anything beyond confirming exactly how much the man already knew."He's fishing," Kaelen said later, once Aurelius relayed the exchange. "Testing how you'd react to the name, nothing more. If he actually understood what the First Choir meant, he wouldn't be wasting time playing games in a crowded meal hall. He'd already be selling that information to the highest bidder.""That's supposed to be reassuring.""It's supposed to be honest," Kaelen said. "Reassurance is a luxury I don't have much of left to offer you these days."The following morning brought no further word from either Thane or Sorrell, though the tension of the previous days had settled into something Aurelius carried constantly now, a low, persistent awareness that danger no longer announced itself clearly, but w
CHAPTER 20: DRAVEN THORNE
Aurelius made it back through the gap just as guards' voices reached the top of the stairwell, and Kaelen sealed the opening as best he could with loose debris while the other prisoners scattered back toward their assigned sections, none of them eager to explain why the work detail had wandered from its intended task."Cave in shifted further than expected," Kaelen told the overseeing guard, voice perfectly level. "We were checking it wasn't going to bring the whole passage down before continuing the clearance."The guard barely glanced at the disturbed rubble, more concerned with the schedule than the details, and waved them back to work without further question. Aurelius kept his expression carefully blank throughout, though the ring's warmth still lingered faintly against his chest, and the memory of that patient, deliberate sound in the darkness refused to fully release its grip on him for the remainder of the day.It was two days later, during a private training session in the sm
