CHAPTER 21
Lorry's lips widened into an evil grin as he finally saw the message he had been expecting since the previous day. He looked around the barely lit sitting room, moving his eyes from Gerald to Elena who was on her phone just like him.Patricia was likely in her favourite place. Dreamland.“I'll be going somewhere very soon,” he became the center of attention in a split second, with Elena taking her eyes off her phone, and Gerald taking his hands away from his eyes, sitting up in the blink of an eye.Elena dropped the phone beside her, clasping both hands at her front. “Where?”Gerald watched from where he was, the curiosity announcing itself on his face.“Well, Gerald already told me to find something doing, rather than sit here all my life, watching you guys starve to death,” he pinched the edge of his nose, turning to the old man who could not help but smile, rubbing his bald head like he had just gotten a clean cut.“Not like I was not making any move or I had no plans,” Lorry added
CHAPTER 22
Seated in a restaurant big enough to get lost in was Joshua and Gina who placed their hands above a table that was pooled with amber lights as they searched through the menu list, until Joshua found what he had been looking for.“Aperol spritz please,” he whispered to the waiter who nodded, before she turned to Gina who was on the other end of the table. Her gaze darted between Joshua, then the waiter, before it finally landed on the menu list. She secretly pulled out her card, with her eyes sweeping through the list before it finally came to a stop.“Bruschetta and Mango Lassi please,” she returned the list to the lady, along with her credit card. “Take it out.”Joshua's face twisted with confusion, his eyebrows coming a few inches apart. “I don't understand.”“I called you here, definitely I'll have to pay.”“You can go please,” it was Gina, waving to the waiter who looked at Joshua before she finally left.“You wanted to have a conversation Joshua,” Gina shrugged, closing her purse
CHAPTER 23
“Are you going somewhere?” Gina tilted her head, while staring at Joshua. “That seemed urgent.”“I don't know, but there's something I need to confirm,” he raised his index as the clacking sound of his keyboard filled the air. He finally found the name he was looking for. Derek's contact.“Excuse me for a moment please,” Joshua rose from his seat, walking outside the restaurant where the warm breeze of the night welcomed him. Joshua knew he was supposed to feel something, he knew this was supposed to affect him, but he just stood there, watching the phone ring, until it ended in a voicemail, and after multiple trials he let out a sigh, staring at the name one more time.“Shit,” he turned back to the restaurant like Gina was watching him, and he ran his fingers through his hair. He checked the app on his phone that showed the countdown to the apocalypse, scrolling slowly till he got to the mission bracket. It was at sixty-three percent.A win for one is a win for all. He knew it, he
CHAPTER 24
“Unfortunately for you, someone managed to get through to us,” the last one among them also took off his glove, flashing a wicked smile towards Joshua.A sudden vibration surged through Joshua, bringing back what he felt back in the car when he bought the supplies he was going to need.Every reward he collected from the system also applied to the normal world for the time being, and for once, he was finally going to test it.Sheer strength alone might not be enough to see him through the apocalypse, but taking on three guys?He was yet to find out. There was no such thing as talking the men out, so Joshua did not bother, he just folded his fist and maintained his stance, one that was solid. Thanks to the reward from the system.“You are one of those guys that won't go down without a fight,” he heard a chuckle from the one on the right side. “But trust me, this is not going to be much of a fight.”“Bet he has no idea about who we are,” the middle one finally stopped at Joshua's front,
CHAPTER 25
Lorry struggled in the chair he was strapped to, while Joshua stood opposite him, watching him rant till he lost his voice.“You don't know what you've gotten yourself into,” Lorry was not going to stop anytime soon, and Joshua was just there, thinking of the perfect judgement to pass down with his hands folded above his chest. He had figured he was three times stronger than an average human. Maybe more. But he was not just going to arrive at an answer, he needed something to make him sure, and Lorry had always been weak so beating him right now was not going to prove a point.'Such a crybaby.’Joshua stared at him in disgust, but immediately he turned his back on the man, a sharp shout slammed into his eardrum.“The world will see you for who you are!”'A world that will be over before you know it?’ He was not going to say any of that to Lorry, and even if he did, Lorry was not sharp enough to know what he meant.“I told you all we needed was just five fucking million!” He let out
CHAPTER 26
Markers of different colours, notes with different graphics, pencils of different sizes, all placed on a table close to a chart board. With just three days left, Joshua sat down in the room, moving his eyes from one pinned paper to the other.Photos of people, locations, biography, jobs, crimes. He had everything pinned on the board like he was a private detective, but that was the best he could think of. The best way to complete everything before the deadline.Preparing for the next three days without disclosing too much was definitely the best thing he could do right now, and he made sure he was always in the room when it was time to clean or serve his food. With his eyes and focus entirely fixed on the objects in front of him, the knock he heard on his door made him twitch, before he turned back.“Come in,” he turned the swivel chair towards the waiters who brought in his food. They were three in number. The soft clatter of plates and the faint clicking of heels filled the space
CHAPTER 27
“Jessica?” Joshua called the name in an inaudible tone. It was as though he needed to call it, in order to make it feel real. This was not supposed to happen. The system was not supposed to pick her or anyone close to Elena. So why?A million thoughts ran through his head as he remained glued to the floor in confusion, and among the endless questions running through his head, one stood out. What good does she have to offer?Compared to Gina, Xavier and Kelvin that had a specific purpose, what was Jessica capable of doing? Why pick her when Victor Haines was there?“I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” the woman's voice pulled Joshua back to reality but he remained in his position.“Lately, I choose to steer clear of the public eye,” she let out an awkward chuckle while looking away from the woman. “As you know, there was this case I lost recently.”“It made me hit rock bottom.”The silence between them would make one understand what she meant even without giving further explanatio
CHAPTER 28
22:34:51.The timer kept beeping and Joshua could only watch. That was all the time he had before the world he had always known would be swept away before his eyes.Former colleagues. Friends. Even the ones that had always hated him.Even the hotel he was sitting in, and he looked around, letting out a sigh as the phone's sudden brightness stole his attention. It was a warning about the number of XP left.[XP LEFT TO COMPLETE MISSION: 5.]Gina, Matthias, Alice, Natasha, Jasper, Kelvin, Benjamin.Xavier's name was still in a bracket, given that he was yet to call, but Joshua finally picked up his cellphone, muttering certain words before he placed the call. The phone rang for the first time, then the second, and the third, before leading him to voicemail but Joshua hissed, tossing his black leather jacket on the bed as he walked towards the wardrobe, scanning the whole place like he had a particular cloth in mind. The search went for a few minutes and he finally dug his hands into the
CHAPTER 29
“Anything else?” Joshua threw the money on the three guys clutching their stomachs.Aiden tried to reach for Joshua's leg but he took it back, offering Ari a hand in which she took without hesitating. He moved his head to the boy sitting close to her. “Who's the boy?” Ari arched her thick brows while taking her hands away from that of Joshua who had not taken his eyes off her.“He's my cousin,” the reply was curt. Just like the only reason she gave him that response was because of what he did for her. “By the way, you don't have to pay my debt.”“You can't pay that tomorrow,” the sun cast a warm glow on his skin and he squinted, stepping under the closest tree which was just two steps away from where he was about two seconds ago.Joshua looked at the guys on the floor. The lanky one had gone unconscious with his tongue out of his mouth, before he returned his attention to the girl.“And there's no telling of what these guys would do if you fail to pay up tomorrow,” he was not expect
CHAPTER 30
‘How could everything seem normal, and the next minute everything is crashing down right before your eyes?’Joshua thought to himself as he stood at the entrance of the hotel, staring at the names in his phone.Gina, Matthias, Alice, Natasha, Jasper, Kelvin, Benjamin, Ari, Xavierr. All written in a bracket, and his name was above, with a golden pin right at the front. It was one that indicated he was the leader. The ten members he needed were complete, and he could choose to add another, but with just eleven hours left, that was the last thing on his mind.He raised his wrist to check his watch, and he let out a heavy sigh from his mouth. It was seventeen minutes past eight in the evening and on the Doomsday system, all he had was approximately twelve hours. It was an advantage for himself and Xavier since the road won't be jumbled up with vehicles that would make Xavier stay longer than he had intended to.“Good evening,” the receptionist was still there when Joshua walked in, and h
