Chapter 41: Harvest
With his own wounds sorted, Jake finally had a moment to take stock of the spoils. The fight itself had barely lasted a few minutes start to finish, but for sheer danger, it ranked among the worst he'd ever walked away from.Small mercy, danger and opportunity always seemed to travel together. These four hadn't looked wealthy on the surface, but it turned out they'd been sitting on some genuinely good stuff.Nobody skips looting a body. Jake started with Old Kessler and Danny, closest to where he stood."Two grenade cards, one bomb card... and a healing card too? Wasn't expecting that.""Wait, hold on, is this actually a white card?"Jake could barely contain himself. He genuinely hadn't guessed these two were carrying something like this. The grenade and bomb cards were standard fare, useful for restocking. The healing card was a pleasant surprise on top of that. But the entry card? That was the real jackpot.Something like that held serious trade value, enough to land a solid vehicl
Chapter 42: Meat Tank
A few days later, the weather finally cleared, and the floodwater started receding fast.Captain Blake's people had indeed picked up on the situation at Jake's building and sent someone to investigate. No avoiding it, really, that fight had been loud. Gunfire, grenades, even the storm couldn't fully cover something that intense.Blake sent a stern-faced, middle-aged man to handle it, someone with a reputation for being scrupulously fair.Facing him, Jake stuck to the truth: Old Kessler and the others had struck first, and he'd only defended himself."You're claiming they attacked first. Any proof of that?"Jake laid out the sequence of events, then added, "The state of the room tells the story. Send a couple of experienced fighters in to look it over, and they'll confirm it."The man shook his head. "It's been days since it happened, and you're the only one who's had access to that room since. That doesn't count as reliable evidence."The implication landed clear enough, too much time
Chapter 43: Hogging the Loot
Jake had a vague memory of this guy, name was something like Perry, if he remembered right. Not that Perry stood out for anything impressive. Jake mostly knew of him because word had spread that he'd recently wormed his way into Captain Blake's inner circle by kissing up hard.Rumor had it Blake originally wanted Hogg for that role, but Hogg had his own priorities and turned it down flat, refusing to serve as anyone's stepping stone. Blake settled for Perry instead.Perry's actual strength was nothing special, and he'd only joined recently. Blake mostly used him for crowd control around camp, nothing important which didn't stop Perry from constantly angling for attention regardless. With the Caravan stalled out this long, plenty of people had already pieced together what Blake was planning. Several vehicles had already peeled back toward the rear, a clear enough statement that they wanted no part of it.Watching that unfold, Perry decided this was his moment to defend the Captain's au
Chapter 44: Utter Defeat
The Meat Tank seemed genuinely disappointed it hadn't managed to snag any living prey from the tunnel, infected simply didn't compare to the real thing, taste-wise.Waste not, though. Its massive palms closed around each infected the way a normal person might handle a small figurine, and that cavernous mouth swallowed each one whole.Captain Blake waited until every last piece of bait had disappeared before signaling his men to fall back. Only once he was safely behind the wheel did he personally hit the detonator.Boom, boom, boomA dense series of explosions rolled out from the far side of the tunnel almost immediately. The rest of the Caravan, drone feed running the whole time, watched it unfold in real time the moment Blake pressed the button.Turned out that thing's greasy, rotting bulk was a lot tougher than it looked. The charges went off deep in its gut, and while its body absorbed most of the blast, it didn't turn to ash the way everyone had hoped. On the drone feed, the mome
Chapter 45: Obsessed with Face
Creak, creakHaving just crushed one vehicle, the Meat Tank's arm-thick fleshy tentacles snapped out again like lightning, wrapping around another car.Slick and greasy as they looked, those tentacles carried real strength once wrapped, no amount of flooring the gas could break free.Bang, bang, bang. The tentacles coiled tighter, hoisting the vehicle straight off the ground. Just as the people inside braced to bail out on foot, the tentacles punched through the windows, wrapped around them directly, and shoved them into its mouth like a quick snack.Barely clear of the tunnel, and it had already taken out two vehicles. Watching that, half the Caravan wanted to floor it until the engine gave out nobody was thinking about fighting back anymore.A few held their ground anyway, pulling out rocket launchers and heavy anti-materiel rifles as a last resort.Except free of the tunnel's constraints, this thing wasn't an easy target to line up anymore the rockets kept missing. The anti-materie
Chapter 46: The Tool
An hour later, the drone launched again.Second trip's luck didn't match the first, though. It circled until the battery ran critical, and still no second rare card turned up. Jake settled for the next best thing, a green healing card.Ever since the fight with Old Kessler's crew, he'd burned through his entire healing card stash. Finally landed one, only to spend it right back out as a bribe.Once bitten, twice shy, as the saying went. After that close a brush with death, going without a healing card or two on hand left him genuinely uneasy. So for the past couple days, he'd bumped healing cards up in priority, a fallback whenever rare cards didn't show.Tonight's pull made the second one he'd landed in just a few days."Two more banked, and I'm back to prioritizing enhancement cards."Healing cards technically traded for slightly more than enhancement cards, but weren't great for large-scale trading. Trade away one or two occasionally, and people just figured he'd gotten lucky.Trad
Chapter 47: The Wild Convoy
"A bottle of cola?"Perry mulled it over. Not exactly a steep price. If this genuinely turned into major intel and won him favor with Blake, it'd be worth it no matter how he sliced it. He agreed fast."Deal. Getting it now."Watching him agree that quickly, Jake called out to his retreating back, "Large bottle. Not a can, not a small one."Perry stumbled mid-step, spun around, and shot Jake a venomous glare furious at himself for agreeing too fast and handing Jake room to raise the price on the spot.Jake spread his hands, the picture of innocence. "You really think a small bottle buys major intel? Fine, forget it I'll just take it to Reeves instead. He'll pay better anyway."Perry ground his teeth but caved. "Wait here," he snapped, stalking off.Not long after, he came back holding a 1.25-liter bottle of cola."I said large. This is clearly medium.""Don't push it."Sensing another round might actually set the guy off, Jake played magnanimous. "Fine, fine. I'll eat the loss. Medium
Chapter 48: An Eye-Opener
Jake crouched down, browsed a while, and once the price felt fair, picked up a few memory drives loaded with novels and movies.Phones and tablets, though, he had no need for. Those weren't actually that rare to pay attention while scavenging and you'd trip over them constantly."Hey, kid. You spring for the extra stuff too? Let's see what kind of ladies you're into."Jake turned around to find Nikki and Sierra grinning at him, clearly amused. No telling how long they'd been watching, but their eyes were locked curiously on the card reader in his hand."Oh, it's you two." Jake didn't miss a beat, playing up mock regret. "Damn, wish I'd known. I could've grabbed two copies and appreciated the art together.""Pfft. Nobody wants to appreciate anything with you.""Come on, wouldn't it be more fun together? Or we could take turns, who's going first?""Ha! You wish."Jake had been close enough with the two of them for a while now to know their rhythm, so he didn't hold back, diving straight
Chapter 49: Anti-Tank Mine
Watching someone actually crack open a card, the crowd that had just been spectating suddenly surged with fresh interest, every last one of them convinced they'd be the next to hit it big. With the crowd pushing forward hard and both stall owners overwhelmed, Jake moved fast, grabbing the remaining three heads carrying card phantoms and paying for them before anyone else got there first. He didn't crack them open on the spot, though. Muttering something about the crowd being too much and not wanting to wait around, he carried the three heads back toward his own vehicle.Nobody thought twice about it, just assumed he was eager to check his own prize in peace. It made sense anyway. The stalls only had one axe circulating, so the line moved slowly. Plenty of other buyers had already peeled off to open theirs privately, same as him.Back at his van, with nobody paying attention, Jake pulled out his own axe and cracked each head open like a walnut, one swing apiece.Three cards, no witness
Chapter 50: Doomsday Chariot
The Meat Tank was simply too massive wherever it went, it swallowed the entire width of the road. And with that much weight behind it, staying on the road meant a landmine was basically unavoidable. No such thing as too light to trigger the blast here. The instant the tentacles wrapped around the mines, a massive fireball engulfed most of the Meat Tank's body. Its tangled, root-like limbs blew apart instantly, scattering debris in every direction. The farthest chunk sailed well over three hundred feet. The blast didn't stop at the tentacles, either the remaining chest cavity took heavy damage too, over half of it gone entirely, what remained a torn, bloody mess of shattered bone and ruined muscle. Its massive head, though, stayed intact, slumped crookedly on the ground, still hissing through its mouth.Without its tentacles, the Meat Tank had effectively lost all mobility.Stubborn as ever, though even reduced to that ruined state, it wasn't dead yet, still weakly thrashing its remain
