Chapter 11
The next day arrived in no time, and the students rushed to choose the classes they would attend until the Grand Trial. Even though riding their dragons was much cooler than attending classes, they knew that if they didn't learn the basics about their dragons, they risked offending them and getting hurt. Worse, they might fail to discover their dragons' weaknesses, allowing their opponents to exploit them.Eryx stared at the long list on the board where all the classes were displayed alongside the instructors' names. Earlier that morning, he had received a box containing the academy's official uniform and a letter informing him that he was now allowed to attend classes, which had confused him.He had thought he would spend his days in that dung heap they called a room until his last breath."Still, I'm grateful I can leave that place." He rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes scanning the board, but he still couldn't decide which class to attend. Unlike everyone else, who knew about t

“WATCH OUT!” the girl screamed in panic, sending Eryx's fear soaring. He squeezed his eyes shut and raised his hands, bracing himself for the scorching pain that was about to tear through his body. A deafening thunderclap blasted through his ears, making his eardrums ring violently. He waited for the pain, but instead, all he felt was an intense heat at the tips of his ears, as though they were being burned. The inside of his ears throbbed as if something were crawling within them. His eyes slowly opened, and two long, thick, muscular arms bulging with veins came into view. A massive palm was pressed tightly in front of his face, one finger nearly grazing his nose. He let out a shaky breath as his trembling legs forced him backward. Turning around to see which madman had almost ended his miserable life, his mouth fell open. Standing before him was an average-height man with long, twisted white beards flowing as though blown by an invisible wind, even though the air around them wa

She walked away, and the remaining four watched as she moved to a corner and sat on the floor. They all turned toward Eryx, but sensing that things were about to get out of hand, Nyra quickly stepped in."Hey! I'm Nyra. What's your name?" she asked with a bright smile, waving cheerfully with her eyes closed. The boy standing at the front, with long, curly hair, scoffed as he folded his arms and rolled his eyes."Aw, come on. Don't be like that," Nyra pleaded, clapping her hands together before walking over to Eryx and pulling him toward the group. "Look, we're all new students here, and none of us knows how things work. We didn't have the privilege of growing up in noble households."She poked Eryx in the side, urging him to speak."Y-Yes. I'm really sorry. It won't happen again, I promise," he said quickly, rubbing the back of his neck. The others exchanged glances before sighing. The first boy rubbed his temple."It's not about apologizing. The Red Planet is extremely dangerous, and

“What is that? Please tell me I am not getting in there.” Mira gasped, her body trembling. “Professor, we won't make it if we go inside there. Look, we only felt the smallest change in the atmosphere, and we are already shivering.”“It’s been decided and can’t be changed.” Sol’s cold voice swept through the place. “You can quit being a rider and lock yourself in a castle, princess.”Xavier’s expression turned ugly as his hands clenched tightly. “What did you say to my sister?”“I believe you’re not deaf.” She answered coldly. The man, Nyra, and Eryx stared at the three of them as they argued.“Silence.” Professor Aldric forced the word out through gritted teeth. The three of them immediately fell silent, their heads turning toward him. His hands were clasped behind his back as he stared at the huge portal.“Whoever wishes to leave can walk through the exit. I cannot have students with weak wills in my class.” He said grimly, turning around halfway. “You will only die before reaching y

“Outrageous!” An elder slammed his palms flat against the table. The remaining elders’ expressions turned grim as they glanced at one another, knowing how bad the situation was.Seeing that the others remained silent, the elder clenched his fists against the table, his eyes twitching with anger.“Aldric dares to disobey the Academy’s rules! What is he trying to say? He’s basically saying we can do nothing about it, and yet you all are quiet?”Another elder, a bald man with blind eyes, sighed.“You should understand something, Modris. Yelling cannot solve any matters involving Aldric. The first thing we must do is find a way to get the students back from the Red Planet. Then we can discuss the necessary punishment to give Aldric.”Modris’ eyes narrowed before he opened them fully.“You speak so calmly, but your legs are trembling, Kas. Is it because you still fear Aldric? He doesn’t have the same power he had in his youth, and he has already been inactive for years, teaching in the Aca

Chapter 16: The Red VeilThe air inside the portal smelled like rusted metal and damp earth, heavy red dust clung to their boots with every step, weighing down their legs while the crimson sky above hung low."Keep your heads down and eyes moving," Aldric said, his voice low as he crouched beside a jagged outcrop of rock. "The terrain here eats arrogance for breakfast."Seth wiped sweat from his forehead, leaving a streak of red dirt across his temple as he stared at a cluster of purple vines coiling around a dead tree trunk a few paces away. If we don't find shelter before whatever lives out there wakes up, we are dead…plain and simple…"Is that... water?" Seth whispered, reaching a hand out toward the dew dripping from the purple vines."Don't touch it," Aldric snapped, catching Seth by the wrist before his fingers made contact. "You think the beasts are the only things here that bite? Those vines secrete a paralytic toxin the second they feel warmth. It dissolves your skin before y

The purple fog pressed against their skin, as the sweet scent of crushed hibiscus was everywhere now, coating the back of their throats until breathing felt like swallowing sludge."Stay calm and listen to the sound of my voice!" Aldric's voice called out from somewhere inside the haze, muffled and distorted like he was speaking from the bottom of a deep well. "Control your breathing! The flower is called the Mind-Lotus. It feeds on adrenaline and panic!"Easy for him to say, Seth thought, his hands clawing at the air as he took a ragged breath. I can't even see my own boots."The pollen bypasses your senses," Aldric shouted, his steps crunching somewhere in the dark. "It does not create illusions out of nothing. It digs into your memories, finds the dark corners, the things you bury, the things you fear most, and brings them right behind your eyes. Do not trust what you see!"Seth took another step forward, his boot heavy in the gloom as the purple fog suddenly swirled around his ank

Eryx lay flat on the hard stone, his breathing shallow and rattling in his throat. The sickening purple stain had crept up past his jaw, dark veins branching across his temples like liquid bruises.Aldric knelt beside him, his fingers pressed tight against Eryx's neck, searching for a pulse. His own head was still spinning from the residual pollen, but he tapped the side of his wrist comm, forcing a frequency through to the field research division back at the academy."I need an extraction protocol," Aldric spoke low into the comm, his voice gravelly. "Student ingested concentrated Mind-Lotus pollen directly into his core."The static sputtered, then a woman's voice cut through, “Direct core ingestion? Aldric, tell me you’re joking. That plant isn't just pollen, it’s a parasite. It binds to spirit energy and calcifies it.”"Is there an antitoxin?" Aldric asked.“No,” the woman replied without hesitation. “If he’s lucky, he has one hour before his core completely hardens and his heart

Aldric threw his body across the dirt, slamming himself between Sol, her mother, and the descending screeching swarm.Razor-sharp talons shredded through the leather of his coat, tearing into the muscle of his back. The modified bats latched on, their long, pale snouts driving deep into his flesh like needles as high-pitched shrieks vibrated straight through his spine. The wrist comm sputtered to life against his bruised forearm, the instructor's voice bursting through the static, distorted “Aldric! The creatures—they’re Parasitic Vespera! They don't just bleed prey, they siphon spirit energy straight from the core! Do not let them latch!”*Too late,* Aldric thought, his vision blurring as a cold, hollow sensation spread from his shoulder blades straight down to his chest. His knees hit the red grit hard. Every breath felt thin, like trying to inhale smoke. Strength drained out of his limbs, leaving his sword hand trembling as he tried to raise his blade.“So this is where the road en

Aldric didn't waste time staring, his own legs were ready to fold, and the air out on the ridge was turning colder by the second. He hitched Eryx higher over his shoulder, feeling the faint thud of the boy’s pulse against his collarbone, and dragged him up the rocky slope toward the cave mouth. "Professor?!" Seth was the first off his feet, scraping his boots against the gravel as he rushed forward. "Where did you—wait, is that Eryx?" Xavier stood up near the back, his mouth slightly open. "How do you have him? He was literally right here on the ground a minute ago. We turned around for one second and he was gone." "Gone?" Aldric halted, letting Eryx slide carefully off his shoulder until the boy rested against the cavern wall. Aldric leaned his hand against the cold stone, taking a slow breaths to stop his head from spinning. "What do you mean, gone?" "He just vanished," Lyra said, her voice shaking as she stepped around Kael. "We were looking at the mouth of the cave, waiting for
