Beneath the Earth
Rotting wood holds no secrets from a man walking toward his own funeral.Thorn ducked his head as he stepped deeper into the narrow shaft, the damp wooden beams creaking under the weight of the earth above. The faint light from the forest faded fast behind them, leaving only the soft silver glow of Lyra floating near his ear. Water dripped rhythmically from the jagged ceiling, splashing against the flat stones of the tunnel floor."Watch your head," Lyra said, her voice echoing in the tight space. "These timber supports look like they will fall if you breathe too hard."Thorn kept his right hand resting on his sword hilt. "The beams are old, but they are sturdy enough. Focus on keeping your light steady.""I am trying," she murmured, hovering closer to his cheek. "It is cold down here, Thorn. A strange kind of cold. Not like the snow on the mountain.""It is just damp earth," Thorn said, taking long, careful strides through the darkness. "Keep moving."They walked in silence for fifty
Behind Enemy Lines
Surprise is the only shield a dead man has left.Thorn crouched low inside the narrow stone trench at the mouth of the mine shaft. Rain poured from the dark sky in heavy sheets, washing the smell of wet earth and damp pine over his face. Fifty paces ahead, bright orange torches burned around a cluster of canvas tents. Thirty archers of the Radiant Sword Sect huddled around small fires, trying to keep their bowstrings dry under leather awnings."They are completely focused on the main barricade," Lyra whispered, her silver glow pulled in tight near his shoulder. "They think you are still coming down the road."Thorn adjusted the leather strap on his chest. "Where is Captain Vane?""In the center tent," she replied, her light flickering toward a large grey shelter with twin gold banners fluttering at the entrance. "I can hear him shouting at a messenger.""Good," Thorn said, unsheathing his iron sword with a soft hiss. "We strike the center first. Cause enough chaos, and the archers wil
The River Bridge
A broken bridge is just a funeral waiting for a crowd.Thorn stopped at the edge of the riverbank, his leather boots sinking two inches into the thick grey silt. The torrential rain had stopped, leaving a heavy blanket of low fog rolling over the dark water. Fifty yards out, the roaring river smashed against the stone pillars of the old imperial bridge. The central arch was gone, collapsed into the white foam years ago, but three thick timber planks had been thrown across the gap by local traders. On the far side, a single iron lantern glowed faintly through the mist."There is someone standing on the wooden span," Lyra whispered, her silver glow dimming until she looked like a stray spark in the fog. "I see a single silhouette."Thorn did not draw his iron blade yet. He kept his left hand resting inside his leather coat pocket. "Just one?""Only one," Lyra replied, floating up toward a willow branch above his head. "He is not wearing sect armor. He has a long spear and a heavy cloak.
The Crossroads Garrison
A torch dropped into dry straw speaks louder than a king's command.Thorn crouched behind a wooden hay cart fifty paces from the crossroads garrison. The midnight fog hung low over the dirt road, mixing with the sharp smell of horse sweat and burning cedar. Up ahead, three tall wooden watchtowers stood over a stone courtyard surrounded by sharp timber stakes. A massive iron gate blocked the south road leading straight to the capital."There are at least twenty guards in the yard," Lyra whispered, her silver glow tucked tight inside Thorn's collar. "And I see two fresh horses tied near the stable. Julian passed through here recently."Thorn watched two guards in leather coats walk past the hay cart, their long spears resting against their shoulders. "Did he leave men behind to reinforce the gate?""I hear the commander inside the guardhouse," Lyra replied softly. "Julian told them to lock the heavy iron grid until dawn. Nobody goes through without an imperial pass."Thorn pulled his ir
The Capital Gates
A city built on secrets always smells like rain and wet stone before it burns.Thorn crouched in the shadow of a abandoned grain cart, his dark wool cloak pulled tight over his shoulders. Dawn was breaking over the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of grey and cold blue. Five hundred yards ahead, the massive outer walls of the imperial capital towered above the open fields. Heavy iron gates blocked the main archway, guarded by two dozen soldiers wearing the silver armor of the Radiant Sword Sect."The main gate is completely sealed," Lyra whispered, her small silver light tucked inside Thorn's leather collar. "They have three spell casters standing on the upper rampart."Thorn adjusted his grip on the hilt of his iron sword. "Julian reached the city last night.""He definitely did," she agreed, her voice trembling slightly. "Look at the banners on the wall. They put up reward posters with your face on every wooden post along the moat."Thorn watched a line of farmers waiting wi
The Wine Vaults
A royal throne is just an expensive chair if the man sitting on it is terrified of the dark.Thorn slipped through the narrow alleyway behind the blacksmith shop, his new steel sword resting light against his hip. Rain began to fall again, turning the soot-stained dirt of the lower ward into black slick mud. Above the wooden rooftops, the high white towers of the inner palace rose into the misty morning sky, wrapped in heavy banner flags of the Radiant Sword Sect."The street patrols are getting closer," Lyra warned, her silver glow hidden safely inside his heavy wool cloak. "I hear heavy boots on the cobblestones two streets over."Thorn kept his head down, pulling his hood low to shadow his face. "We are almost at the garden wall. Stay quiet."He turned down a cramped passage between two abandoned stone storehouses. At the dead end stood a rusted iron door half-buried under creeping ivy and wet moss. It was the entrance to the old imperial wine vaults, built deep into the foundation
The Council Chamber
A throne room smells very different when the men inside realize they are about to die.Thorn ducked under a heavy downward strike from the lead guard, bringing his northern steel blade up in a sharp, blinding arc. Steel clashed against steel, sending bright orange sparks showering onto the polished white marble floor. Thorn twisted his wrists, catching the guard's sword guard, and shoved the man hard into two soldiers charging right behind him."Hold the perimeter!" Elder Vael shrieked, backing toward the high glass windows at the far end of the grand room. "Do not let him reach the dais!"Lyra shot through the air like a silver streak, diving straight into Elder Vael's glowing face. "Looking for this?" she yelled, her bright light flaring with intense silver sparks right against his eyes.Elder Vael cried out, swinging his wooden staff wildly at the empty air to hit the floating light. "Get away from me, cursed spirit!"Lyra looped around his head, snagging the glass orb at the top o
The Deep Vault
A quiet curse is far more deadly than a hundred drawn swords.Thorn stepped off the high dais, his northern steel sword resting at his side as his dark eyes locked onto Elder Corin. The rain outside slammed against the stained glass windows, casting long red and blue shadows across the marble floor. Beside the shattered closet door, Elder Vael remained on his knees, his hands shaking as he stared at the sharp point of Thorn's blade."Where is the entrance to the vault?" Thorn asked, his voice low and cold.Elder Corin held her silver dagger tight, her knuckles white. "Do you truly think you can walk down there and stop a primordial curse? You are out of your mind.""Tell me where the entrance is," Thorn repeated, taking one heavy step toward her."The trapdoor is behind the high throne," Vael blurted out, pointing a trembling finger toward the golden seat at the front of the council chamber. "Under the silk carpet! The key is around Corin's neck!""Shut your mouth, Vael!" Corin snappe
The Clash in the Dark
A silver blade in the dark kills just as fast as a golden king's command.Thorn ducked beneath the whistling strike, stepping sideways on the slippery basalt floor. Julian's silver blade hissed through the air, hitting the stone wall with a loud metallic clang that sent bright sparks shooting into the dim vault."You are still slow on your left side, Thorn!" Julian roared, pulling his sword back and thrusting straight for Thorn's chest.Thorn brought his new steel blade up, catching Julian's weapon near the hilt. "I do not need to be fast to kill a man who is afraid.""I am not afraid of you!" Julian spat, leaning his full body weight against the crossed blades. Steel ground against steel with a sharp, grating shriek. "You are just a boy holding onto a dead crown!""Then why are your hands shaking?" Thorn asked quietly.Julian bared his teeth in rage, kicking his right boot toward Thorn's knee. Thorn sidestepped the kick, released the clash, and drove his left elbow straight into Juli
The Iron Gate
A fallen man can pick up his honour if he holds a heavy bar with both hands.Thorn stepped up beside Julian, his hands gripping the second notch of the heavy iron gate. Above them, the stone ceiling groaned loudly as Elder Corin's spell shook the foundation of the palace. Dust and small pebbles showered down through the cracks in the dark stairwell, splashing into the stagnant puddles on the basalt floor."Lift on three!" Julian yelled over the deafening rumble of crumbling stone. "We have to seat the crossbar before the ceiling drops!""One! Two! Three!" Thorn barked, throwing his weight upward.Together, they heaved the massive iron bar into the wall slots, sealing the heavy iron gate shut with a loud, metallic thud. The thick iron bars groaned under the sudden weight, but the lock held firm, blocking the narrow spiral staircase completely."That will hold the elders," Julian panted, wiping sweat and stone dust from his forehead with his sleeve. "Even Corin's spell cannot break four
