CHAPTER 91
"I'm getting there." Silent turned, pointed a lazy finger at the boot-man. "Trigger here picked him up outside his own warehouse. Didn't even put up a fight — thought it was a business thing, thought he could talk his way out." He pointed to the knife-wielder next. "Blade's the one who worked the hands first. Fingers, one at a time, so Feliks had plenty of time between each one to think about the next. I mean, we were quite nice with him." Darius's jaw clenched as he listened, but he said nothing. "After the hands, we let him sit with it a while. Couple hours. Let the shock wear thin, let the pain settle in proper, because pain that's fresh doesn't teach a man anything — it's the pain that lingers that does the work." Silent's tone hadn't shifted, hadn't so much as dipped into cruelty; he might have been describing how to season a stew. "Then Blade opened him up along the ribs. Not too deep. Just enough that breathing became a decision inste
CHAPTER 92
The silence that followed Lucifer's words stretched long enough that Darius could hear his own pulse hammering in his ears. "Still want to play the stubborn boy, Mr. Cross?" Darius's hand was shaking. He hadn't noticed until he set the wine glass down and watched the surface of it tremble. "Play it again," he said, his voice hoarse, barely his own. "Play it again." Lucifer obliged, totally unbothered, tapping the screen once more. Rhea's voice filled the room a second time, thinner and more frightened than Darius had ever imagined it could sound. "Darius, you have to follow them, otherwise they're going to kill me—" "Stop." The word tore out of him before he could stop it. "Stop it. That's enough." Lucifer lowered the phone slowly, tucking it back into his jacket with the unhurried satisfaction of a man who had already won and was simply waiting for the other side to admit it. "So," he said. "Are we still discussin
CHAPTER 93
Darius said nothing, jaw tight, refusing to let the story land the way Roberto clearly wanted it to. "Or take Marisol," Roberto continued, still very slowly and richly. "Smartest accountant I've ever met. Worked three jobs just to stay afloat before she came to me. Now she manages more money than most banks in this state, and no one — not the police, not the IRS, not a single soul outside these walls — has ever traced a cent of it back to either of us." "She didn't lose herself working for me, Mr. Cross. She built herself, brick by brick, with resources she never would have had otherwise." "And I'm sure you have a hundred more stories just like it," Darius said. "Actually, I have thousands," Roberto said simply. "Loyalty isn't something I demand, Mr. Cross. It's something I earn, by making the people around me more than they were before they met me." "I don't collect soldiers. I collect men and women who would've stayed small their whole lives w
CHAPTER 94
Twelve hours in the dark had a way of stretching a man's mind thin. Darius had lost track of time somewhere around the fourth or fifth hour, when the ache in his back from sitting against the cold concrete wall had dulled into something almost bearable. And his thoughts had started circling the same handful of things over and over — Rhea, probably would have reached out to him if she was busy and safe. Charlie, pacing some apartment somewhere, working himself into a frenzy; and Roberto's voice telling him the lie had worked exactly as intended. He didn't sleep. He wasn't sure the room even allowed for it, wedged as he was between four walls that swallowed every sound he made and gave nothing back. After some hours, the fear had burned itself down into something harder and by the time the door finally opened and light spilled in hard enough to make him flinch, Darius wasn't afraid anymore. He was just tired of being handled. "Yo
CHAPTER 95
Darius didn't flinch. "I don't respond well to threats. I told you that already." He looked past the barrel, straight into Lucifer's eyes. "You can shoot me, or you can let me try to save him. You don't get both. And if you keep wasting time like this? He's going to die!" "Put the gun down!" Silent lunged forward and wrenched it from Lucifer's grip before he could argue, tossing it aside and turning back to Darius with something close to begging in his eyes. "Please. Please, just help him." The room parted for him after that, every hardened, dangerous man in it stepping back to make way for who they just had been treating like shit. "I need a firm surface, not the floor — clear the desk," Darius said, already moving. "Something I can use to elevate his legs. And find me anything with epinephrine in it, a first aid kit, anything." They scrambled. Every request Darius made was met with immediate, frantic obedience, men who had spent
CHAPTER 96
By the time he reached his building, the sky had faded to the pale gray of early morning, streetlights still burning uselessly against a sun that hadn't quite decided to show up yet. He heard the voices before his key even found the lock. For one disoriented second, exhaustion made him wonder if he'd wandered into the wrong apartment entirely. Then the door swung open before he'd finished turning the key, and Rhea was standing there, eyes wide and red-rimmed like she hadn't slept at all. Behind her, Natasha rose off the couch, laptop still open in her hand, and Charlie was already crossing the room toward him, his expression caught somewhere between relief and fury. "Where the hell have you been?" Charlie got there first, grabbing Darius by the shoulders as if he needed to confirm he was actually real. "I called you probably forty times. Forty, Darius." "I'm fine," Darius said, which felt like the understatement of his entire life. "Yo
CHAPTER 97
Darius sat alone at a narrow desk facing the panel, Charlie waiting somewhere outside because students weren't permitted to bring anyone into the room with them. And for the first time all week, the exhaustion of the last forty-eight hours felt like it belonged to someone else entirely. Right now there was only this — three faculty members seated behind a long table, folders open in front of them, and the particular, suffocating dread of watching people decide his future without much interest in hearing his side of it first. Dean Holloway sat in the center, reading glasses perched low on his nose, flanked by Professor Shinene on his left and a stern-faced woman Darius didn't recognize on his right, her nameplate reading Professor Bush. "Mr. Cross," Dean Holloway said, not looking up from the folder in front of him. "You understand why you're here, correct." "I understand what I've been accused of," Darius said evenly. "What I do not seem to unders
CHAPTER 98
"The cheat sheet existed. It was found on you. Mr. Triesenberg reporting suspicious behavior he witnessed isn't evidence of a conspiracy, Mr. Cross. If anything, it's evidence of an observant classmate doing exactly what he should." "That's insane." Darius's hands curled into fists on top of the desk, every ounce of composure he'd been holding onto for the last twenty minutes finally starting to fray at the edges. "He knew what was in my pocket before anyone searched me. How does an observant classmate know that unless he's the one who put it there? With all due respect, I don't think you are thinking about this reasonably." "That's speculation," Vance said. "The committee deals in evidence, not speculation." "Then look at the evidence properly," Darius said, his voice cracking now with the effort of staying level. "Look at who benefits from this. Look at the history between us. Ask anyone on this campus, Valerio has hated me since the semest
CHAPTER 99
The prison looked different in daylight than Rhea had imagined it all these months — less like the cold, punishing place she'd pictured lying awake at night, and more like something oddly civil. Almost administrative, with its manicured hedges lining the visitor's path and guards who nodded politely instead of barking orders. At the checkpoint, the officer scanned her ID for barely a second before stepping aside to let her through, surprisingly courteously. "Ms. Kane. Your father's out on the east lawn, waiting on you." "The lawn?" The word caught her off guard, and she found herself repeating it, as though saying it twice might make it make more sense. "He's allowed outside?" "Since the new arrangement went through, yeah." The guard shrugged, like this was simply how things were now and questioning it wasn't his job. Rhea's brows lifted, somewhere between disbelief and dry amusement. "That's not what I was told." When she was informed
CHAPTER 100
Rhea felt something cold settle in her chest, listening to him lay it out with such calm, practiced conviction. Like he'd convinced himself of every word of it years ago and had simply been waiting for an audience patient enough to hear the full version. "That's insane," she said quietly. "You know that's insane, right? Even if any of that were true, that doesn't justify what you did." "Doesn't it?" Malcolm turned to face her fully now, something intense and pleading in his expression. "Rhea, I need you to understand something. This isn't over. It was never just about Reginald." A slow, sick feeling started climbing up her spine. "What are you talking about? Dad, can you stop making this seem like something proper? It's sickening and I wonder why you're acting like this." "Rhea, I need you to listen to me. I really do..." "What possibly could you have to say?" "Darius," Malcolm said. "Now known as Kristian Argent... He's the one who ex
