The Siege of Velmoor (1)
It had been a month now. Constantly, the castle had been attacked by beasts from outside its walls. At first, everyone thought it was just a random rampage, some seasonal surge of monsters pushed out of their usual territory. But as the attacks continued, night after night, it became clear this was more than mere chance."Someone, or something, is controlling these beasts to attack us, my king," the advisor said, his voice tight with restrained urgency. The attacks had been relentless. "We have to do something as soon as possible," he pressed. The king's expression hardened. "Send in the warriors of Velmoor. Ask the Adventurers' Guild for assistance. It's an order. I want this resolved as soon as possible.""Yes, my king.""I want to see the guild master. Now.""I shall go get him at once, my king."Within minutes, the message reached the guild."I want to see the guild master. I have a message from the king," the messenger said to the receptionist."Please, come with me." She led him
The Siege of Velmoor (2)
The beasts surged forward in endless waves, and the walls of Velmoor rained arrows down onto the battlefield where they gathered. Archers loosed volley after volley into the thick of the horde, but for every beast that fell, three more clawed their way forward to take its place. The battle stretched past the first hour, and both knight and adventurer alike began to feel the weight of exhaustion settling into their arms. Still the beasts kept coming. "Where are they coming from?" one adventurer shouted, cutting down a wolf-like creature only for two more to lunge at his flank. "We must have killed a thousand by now," another cried, breathless. "And still they come." The tide did not slow. Soon both adventurers and knights found themselves too spent to keep pace with the endless assault. A cluster of goblin mages broke from the horde and hurled a wave of flame toward the weakened line. Those still able to move scrambled to raise a shield spell, but the barrier flickered and buckl
The Siege of Velmoor (3)
Diablo's eyes narrowed on the beast charging toward the barrier's edge. He raised a single hand."Instant Death."The beast collapsed mid-stride, its momentum carrying its lifeless body forward until it skidded to a stop in the dirt. No wound. No blood. Just silence where a roar had been a moment ago.He teleported past the barrier's edge before anyone could react. The barrier itself shimmered faintly, a dome of pale light stretched thin over the battlefield. It had been raised by the knights' formation mages hours ago, a desperate measure to keep the wounded contained and the beasts from flanking the rear lines. It worked in one direction only. Anything with hostile intent registered by the enchantment could not cross its threshold from the outside, the barrier reading intent through mana signatures and rejecting anything that carried the beasts' feral hunger. But it could not stop something that meant no harm at all, and it could not hold back something that simply chose to walk thr
The Siege of Velmoor (4)
The building rose out of the fog like a rotted tooth jutting from diseased gums, its stone walls cracked and blackened as though something had burned through them from the inside long ago. Vines choked the windows, and what glass remained was shattered, hanging in jagged shards that caught no light at all. The air here felt heavier, thick with the coppery scent of old blood and something fouler beneath it, something that had been left to fester for years. Diablo stepped through the collapsed archway that had once been a door. His boots crunched against something brittle underfoot. He looked down. Bones. Human bones, scattered across the floor in uneven piles, some still bearing scraps of rotted cloth, others bleached pale and clean as though they had been picked over meticulously. Skulls stared up at him from the corners of the room, empty sockets catching whatever dim light filtered through the broken windows. Deep gouges scarred the walls, claw marks dragged in long, deliberate st
The Siege of Velmoor (5)
The ground shook first, a low tremor that rattled loose stone from the ruined archways overhead. Dust sifted down from cracks in the ceiling. Then the earth split open entirely, black soil curling back like torn parchment, and something vast began to rise from the crack.A viper, but not a natural one. Three heads uncoiled from a single massive body, each scaled in a different shade of dark, oil slick color that seemed to drink in the torchlight rather than reflect it. The leftmost head hissed, and a curl of black flame licked from between its fangs, hot enough that the air around it shimmered. The rightmost head opened its jaws and a torrent of water surged out, hissing where it struck the scorched stone floor and carving a shallow groove into the rock. The center head, larger than the other two, simply stared down at Diablo with slitted golden eyes, and the air around it began to churn into a visible funnel of wind, loose stones and debris lifting off the ground and orbiting it."Th
Merchant's Road
The next day, Diablo went to the guild. When he got there, he went straight to the guild master's office."Hey, Diablo.""Yes, sir.""I called you here because I heard what happened at the front line. You said it wasn't a normal rampage but an overflow, which led you to the mastermind. You caught him and stopped him from summoning more beasts, and your good work has been noticed. You shall now be promoted to B rank.""I see. Thanks for the promotion.""Yeah, something else. The king has decided to host a tournament. This tournament is done every five years. Adventurers, knights, anyone is allowed to participate, and I would like you to participate.""I don't think I'm interested.""Ugh, I see. But the winner will be rewarded with the sum of one million gold."*I sure could need that money to get a base. It's about time I leave the tavern. Even though I have the money to currently buy it, I wouldn't want to pass up the opportunity,* Diablo thought to himself."I am now.""I know you're
Return to Velmoor
The rest of the journey passed without incident. By the time the walls of Ashenmere came into view, the sun had dipped low, painting the sky in streaks of orange and violet. The kingdom was smaller than Velmoor but busier, its streets packed with merchants closing up stalls for the night and guards making their rounds along the main road. The merchant guided the cart through the gates and toward a shop tucked into a side street, its windows lined with glass bottles of every shape and color. An older woman stepped out to greet them, wiping her hands on her apron. "Farel, you're later than usual," she said, then caught sight of Diablo standing beside the cart. "And who's this?" "My escort," the merchant said, climbing down and stretching his back. "Guild sent him. Good thing too, we ran into trouble on the road. Wolves, then bandits." The woman's eyes widened. "Bandits? Are you hurt?" "Not a scratch on either of us," Farel said, patting the crates. "Potions are all intact too. This
The King's Tournament (1)
The next two days passed quickly. Velmoor buzzed with an energy Diablo hadn't seen since he'd arrived, banners strung between buildings, merchants setting up stalls along the main road, and adventurers from neighboring towns filtering in by the dozen, all chasing the same prize. The training grounds stayed packed from sunrise to dusk, and by the second day, Diablo had sparred with nearly every serious contender in Velmoor's guild at least once. On the morning of the third day, he woke before the sun and found the streets already stirring. He dressed, strapped on his sword, and made his way toward the guild, where a crowd had already gathered outside despite the early hour. Isyrae stood near the entrance with a clipboard, checking names off a long list as adventurers filed past her toward the registration table. She spotted Diablo and waved him over. "There you are. I was starting to wonder if you'd changed your mind again." "Not this time," Diablo said. "Good, because the are
The king’s tournament (2)
The tunnel opened out into blinding daylight, and the roar of the crowd hit Diablo like a physical wall the moment he stepped onto the arena floor. Thousands of voices layered over each other, cheering, shouting names, placing last second bets with the vendors weaving through the stands. He walked to the center of the ring, dirt packed hard beneath his boots, and waited as the opposite tunnel opened to release his opponent. Bren Coldrick strode out in full plate armor, the Velmoor garrison's crest emblazoned across his chest, a longsword resting easily in his grip like it was an extension of his own arm. He was broad through the shoulders, moved with the kind of disciplined confidence that came from years of formal training, and gave Diablo a short, respectful nod as he crossed to the center of the ring. "Adventurer," Coldrick said. "I've heard a few things about you. B rank in record time, from what the garrison's been saying." "Word travels." "It does." Coldrick rolled his sh
The king’s tournament (3)
The break between rounds gave Diablo just enough time to find Natsu's group again before the next bracket was called. They'd claimed a spot near the fighters' tunnel, close enough to watch the ongoing matches through the gap in the stone archway."That was insane," Mari said the moment she spotted him, practically vibrating with energy. "You made Coldrick look like a rookie. He's supposed to be one of the best swords in the whole garrison.""He was good," Diablo said. "Better than he probably realizes.""Better than you, apparently not," Leo said dryly, not looking up from the bracket sheet he'd been studying. "You're through to round two already. Some of the earlier matches are still dragging on."Akeno leaned against the stone wall, arms crossed. "Any idea who you're facing next?""Not yet."As if summoned by the question, Isyrae appeared through the crowd, clipboard in hand, threading her way toward them with practiced ease. "There you are. Round two brackets just got posted." She
