CHAPTER 11
At the very center the High Magistrate Vane stood within a narrow circle painted in gold leaf. His robes rustled slightly, his hands resting casually on the pommel of a massive, black-iron broadsword. Beside him, resting upon a velvet cushion atop a stone pillar, burned the Sunfire Relic Gem—a blinding, football-sized orb of primordial light that radiated waves of pure, heat-haze energy across the arena floor."The rules of the final trial are absolute," Vane’s voice boomed, sharp and cold as shattered glass. "The Sunfire Relic belongs to whoever proves themselves worthy to lead the Golden Knights. Your task is not to defeat me because none of you can; but you have to force me to move a single step out of this golden circle."He looked over the ten remaining qualifiers. Prince Julian, despite his total exhaustion from the maze, stood near the front, his pale face desperate to win. "You may use any spell, any weapon, and any fatal technique," Vane added, a mocking smile touching
CHAPTER 12
"Look at him!" a noble shouted from the upper balconies, pointing a jewel-encrusted finger down at the stage."He flinched! He didn't even dare touch the Magistrate's shield!""What a pathetic coward!" another voice jeered, joining the chorus of thousands. "He swung at the air and nearly blew himself over with his own draft!""To think we actually thought he was strong! He's nothing but a fraud!"Jayd heard none of it.To him, the roar of the crowd was muffled, submerged beneath a thick ocean of blood and ash. The arena floor had vanished. The blue sky above Ironcrest was gone, replaced by the bruised, violet clouds of the Nether Realm. Before him, High Magistrate Vane’s amber didn’t exist and only the towering iron stake stood. Ria hung suspended in the air, the thorned chains digging deep into her pale arms, dripping dark crimson onto the charred earth. Standing beside her was a silhouette morphed, taking on the terrifyingly familiar, towering shape of the Abyssal Overseer. Mal
CHAPTER 13
Fifty yards away, buried under a mound of shattered masonry and broken granite pillars, High Magistrate Vane lay completely unconscious, his golden armor crumpled like foil.Jayd with his hands casually at his back simply turned and stepped over the shattered stone. He walked calmly to the velvet cushion resting atop the stone pillar, picked up the football-sized Sunfire Relic Gem, and tucked it casually under his arm like an unread book. The lead invigilator, trembling so violently he nearly tore his official parchment, looked from the collapsed Magistrate to Jayd. He was waiting for an order to announce the winner but everyone was in shock. He had no choice."The trial... is complete," the invigilator squeaked, his voice cracking through the magic amplification array."By absolute right of force... Jayd is hereby inducted as a Commander of the Golden Knights!"Jayd didn't bow or wave to the speechless crowds who did nothing but doubt him throughout the challenges. Without a second
CHAPTER 14
The five serpents descended with the deafening roar of a falling mountain. Necrotic green flames tore through the cavern. Jayd didn't retreat. Holding his unwrapped broadsword with a single hand, he shifted his weight into a low stance.Swish!A blinding arc of compressed divine force erupted from Jayd’s blade. The arc sliced clean through three of the striking heads, decapitating them in a single fraction of a second. Thick, black blood sprayed against the cavern walls, sizzling violently as it ate away the stone. Before the severed heads could even hit the ground, the exposed necks began to wriggle and swell. With a sickening squelch of bursting flesh, six new heads sprouted from the raw stumps. Where there were once three, now nine coiled serpents towered over Jayd, their hollow, yellow eyes burning with unholy frenzy.Jayd stepped back, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the beast's regeneration. It isn't using natural healing mana. The Abyssal core inside its chest is pulling
CHAPTER 15
Jayd walked over to the shattered stone platform where High Magistrate Vane had performed the blood ritual. Halfway up the stairs leading out of the cavern, a leather map case lay abandoned in the black, corrosive mud dropped by Vane in his panicked retreat.Jayd picked it up and unrolled the thick parchment across a flat slab of granite. It was a detailed map of the entire continent, spanning thousands of leagues beyond the borders of Ironcrest. Marked in red ink across five major kingdoms from the frozen spires of the Northern Marches to the shifting sands of the Sunken Empire were five distinct Abyssal runes."The Forbidden Titan's Seals," Lyra whispered, stepping up beside Jayd and looking over his shoulder, her breath catching in her throat. "The hydra beneath our cathedral was just one... there are five major locks hidden across the continent. Naj isn't just trying to conquer Ironcrest. He's trying to unseal the Titan.""And Vane is gathering the keys," Jayd said, his voice
CHAPTER 16
The golden morning rays streamed through the high, shattered stained-glass windows of the Grand Cathedral, illuminating the dust motes. Jayd looked down at the heavy platinum medallion in his hand. The three-headed dragon emblem of the Imperial High Command gleamed against his calloused palm, pulsing with authentic royal mana."Special Inquisitor," Jayd murmured, his thumb tracing the sharp edges of the crest."It gives you absolute authority to pass through any border garrison, requisition supplies from any Golden Knight outpost, and commandeer local forces across all five eastern realms," Prince Julian said. "The High Council will attempt to cover up Vane’s treason to preserve the crown's image, but this token operates outside their red tape. As far as the ironcrest is concerned, you travel under my direct royal mandate."Jayd tucked the medallion safely into his inner coat pocket alongside the Sunfire Relic Gem. "You've grown sharp, Julian. Keep Ironcrest stable while I'm gon
CHAPTER 17
Aethelgard had always been renowned across the continent as the Cradle of Mana, a high-magic realm where marble spires scraped the clouds. The heart of this magic was the Aegis Altar, an ancient, shimmering barrier anchored directly to the life essence of the kingdom's holy maiden, Elysia. Jullian explained all he knew about Aethelgard as they went. He was well read on the history of the kingdom. So long as Maiden Elysia’s divine soul burned bright within the Grand Cathedral, no Abyssal entity could step foot across the kingdom's borders. Jayd wondered if this was true, if no entity from Abyss could enter then why did Valkyrie send him in. As Jayd, Julian, and Lyra approached the massive iron gates of the capital city, the sky was swallowed by a suffocating, unnatural twilight. The dark energy swirled but only Jayd could feel it and he knew they had to hurry or it would be too late."Halt! State your business!" a captain of the Aethelgardian Guard barked, stepping forward with twen
CHAPTER 18
The inner sanctum erupted into absolute chaos.Hundreds of resurrected shadow-warriors—their spectral eyes burning with malice, their rusted armor clanking against the marble poured through the shattered archways. The air grew thick with the stench of ancient graves and freezing necrosis."Form a perimeter!" Prince Julian shouted, drawing his longsword.Julian stepped up shoulder-to-shoulder with Jayd. Channeling his strength, he unleashed a refined, swift series of solar-infused strikes. His blade danced through the front rank, severing spectral limbs and shattering decayed shields. His swordplay was cleaner, sharper, and far more disciplined than it had ever been."There are too many of them!" Lyra cried out, her lightning spear spinning in a blinding blue wheel as she deflected a volley of phantom arrows. For every ten shadow-warriors Julian and Lyra cut down, twenty more surged from the dark fissures in the floor. The sheer kinetic weight of the dead pressed in, forcing Julian
CHAPTER 19
At the center of the tower's summit, suspended in mid-air within a cage of pulsing dark runes, hung Maiden Elysia. Her white robes were torn, her silver-gold hair matted with cold sweat, and her pale skin was now covered in the exact same spiderwebbing, ink-black vein markings that Jayd had seen months ago in the subterranean dungeons of Blackstone Fortress. Her breath was shallow, her energy bleeding out in steady, golden threads that fed directly into the burning sky-seal above her.Standing beneath her, his posture relaxed and hands casually folded behind his back, was Lord Naj. The silver weeping-demon mask he wore gleamed beneath the glow of the ritual.Beside him, General Malakor lay on his knees, panting heavily, his black iron armor cracked and smoking from his panicked retreat.Jayd stepped onto the stone platform. His boots made no sound against the tiles. His broadsword, completely bare of its cloth wrapping, rested at his side, its steel reflecting the blood-red light
CHAPTER 20
Julian took a hesitant step forward, his hand still clutched tightly around the hilt of his longsword. His chest heaved from the sprint up the winding tower stairs, but it was not physical exhaustion that made his hands tremble. It was the absolute, unyielding coldness in Jayd’s voice."Tartarus?" Julian repeated, He looked from the scorched, empty space where Maiden Elysia had hung to the broken half of the silver mask lying crushed in Jayd’s palm. "Jayd, do you even hear yourself? Tartarus isn't a province or a neighboring kingdom. It’s a myth! You can't just... walk into the underworld!"Lyra stepped up beside the prince, her lightning spear lowered, though her sharp eyes swept the perimeter for lingering threats. "The prince is right, Jayd. Even if the tear led there, the rift is closed. The spatial coordinates have already collapsed into normal mana currents. There is no door left open."Jayd didn't answer right away. He stood quietly at the edge of the parapet, his long co
