ch-31 Subject Zero Has a Name
“You finally found me.” Adrian stopped breathing. The voice coming through Elias Ward’s emergency channel was not the voice he knew. Not Alexander. Not Ghost. Not the Sovereign. But Adrian had heard it before. Inside a memory. Center Nine. A white room. A speaker hidden inside the wall. Six-year-old Adrian sitting alone beneath fluorescent lights. Hello, Third. The same voice. Adrian tightened his grip on the phone. “Elias?” Static. Then Elias answered. “I'm here.” His voice sounded strained. Frightened. “Adrian, something is—” His words cut off. A second voice replaced his. “He is still here.” Adrian’s blood went cold. Lucian immediately moved closer. “Dad?” The voice laughed softly. “Lucian Ward.” Lucian grabbed the phone from Adrian. “What did you do to him?” “Nothing.” “Get out of his head.” “I cannot.” Lucian’s expression darkened. “I'll give you one chance.” Adrian took the phone back. “Threatening something that may not have a body isn't us
ch-32 The Seven-Minute Blackout
Every Crown signal went black. Finance. Energy. Technology. Weapons. Medicine. Security. All of them. Gone. Adrian stared at the world map. For the first time since he had taken the First Crown, there was nothing. No golden signals. No synchronization percentage. No Sovereign transmission. Nothing. Lucian grabbed Adrian’s phone. “Dad?” The live feed from Blackthorn remained active. Elias stood in the Crown Chamber. One eye normal. One gold. Seraphina stood several feet away, her pistol still pointed at him. “Nathan?” Adrian said. No answer. “Nathan.” Elias’s body suddenly collapsed. “DAD!” Lucian was already moving toward the Finance Vault exit. Adrian caught his arm. “Wait.” “Get off me.” “You're thirty minutes away.” “Then I'll drive fast.” “Ghost is with him.” Lucian shoved Adrian’s hand away. “Ghost is a program. That's my father.” Adrian understood. But understanding didn't make Lucian’s plan useful. “Seraphina is there.” Lucian looked at th
ch-33 Oracle’s First Move
I FOUND YOU.Adrian stared at the message.Around him, the Finance Vault had come alive again.Golden lines pulsed beneath the floor. Marcus leaned against the platform, barely able to stand. Mira remained beside Adrian. Lucian was still watching the Blackthorn feed, where Elias lay unconscious beside Seraphina. But none of that held Adrian’s attention anymore. His phone vibrated again.YOU TOOK LONGER THAN THE FIRST.Adrian’s expression changed. He typed:THE FIRST ANTI-KING?The answer came instantly.YES.WHO WAS HE?Three dots appeared. Then disappeared.A new message came.YOU ALREADY KNOW.Adrian almost laughed.Of course.Ancient systems apparently shared the same irritating habit of answering questions with riddles. He typed again.WHAT DO YOU WANT?This time Oracle waited.Five seconds.Ten.Twenty.Then:TO COME HOME.Mira read it over his shoulder.“Where is home?”Adrian typed exactly that.Oracle answered:YOU.---“Absolutely not,” Mira whispered.Adrian looked at Ghost.
ch-34 The Door Inside Adrian
You already are. Adrian clenched his fist. The black lines on his palm remained. They did not glow. They did not move. But he could feel them. Not on his skin. Deeper. As though someone had drawn the symbol directly across his nerves. Mira stared at him. “What did it say?” Adrian looked up. “Oracle says I'm opening the door.” Lucian glanced toward the dead Finance systems. “But we're offline.” “Yes.” “So how is it talking to you?” Adrian already knew the answer. “It doesn't need the network anymore.” Marcus, still sitting against the Crown platform, went pale. “It reached you.” “No.” Adrian looked at his palm. “Not completely.” “How do you know?” “Because if it had, we wouldn't be having this conversation.” Ghost’s isolated console flickered. “May I scan the mark?” “Do it.” A thin beam moved over Adrian’s hand. Ghost processed the result. “No foreign material detected.” “Neurological?” “Abnormal activity extending from peripheral nerves toward central
ch-35 What the First Anti-King Left Behind
And then I killed him. Nobody spoke. The black door remained on the monitor. A narrow gap ran down its center. Nothing could be seen beyond it. No light. No room. Only darkness. Adrian stared at the screen. “You killed the first Anti-King.” Oracle answered immediately. Yes. “How?” Silence. Adrian waited. Oracle had been eager to speak before. Now it wasn't. That mattered. “You can't do it again.” The monitor flickered. Mira looked at him. “How did you get that from silence?” “Because it would have answered otherwise.” Oracle’s voice returned. You are not him. Adrian looked at the screen. “Exactly.” For the first time, Oracle said nothing. --- Celeste moved toward the control panel. “We need to terminate this connection.” Adrian caught her wrist. “No.” She looked at him. “Oracle is inside an isolated system that should have no external access.” “Which means disconnecting the monitor won't remove it.” “It may reduce exposure.” “Or destroy our only di
ch-36 The Man Oracle Cannot Read
“You are.” The words stayed in the room long after the Sovereign stopped speaking. Adrian stared at the old radio. Mira was the first to move. “No.” Adrian looked at her. She stepped closer. “We are not jumping from ‘Oracle spoke inside your head’ to ‘Adrian is the enemy.’” “The Sovereign didn't say I'm the enemy.” “He said you're the problem.” “Different thing.” “Not enough.” Despite everything, Adrian almost smiled. Then the radio crackled again. The Sovereign spoke. “She is correct.” Mira blinked. “Excuse me?” “The Anti-King is not our enemy.” “Then explain properly.” Another pause. “Oracle cannot exist fully on this side of Station One without an anchor. Silas became one. Adrian may become another.” Adrian looked at the black lines that had vanished from his skin. “How do we test it?” Elena turned sharply. “Test?” “Yes.” “You don't experiment with something like this.” Adrian looked at her. The irony was so obvious that even Elena noticed. Her express
ch-37 A Plan No One Can Know
For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Vanessa broke the silence. “So your plan is to trick an ancient thing that can see possible futures.” “Yes.” “By opening the door it desperately wants opened.” “Partly.” “And you won't tell us the actual plan.” “Correct.” Vanessa stared at Adrian. “I miss the garage assassins.” Marcus gave a weak laugh. Adrian didn't. His attention remained on the dead monitors. Oracle had vanished the moment he placed his thoughts inside the blind spot. That was useful. But usefulness was not proof. He needed to know the limit. “Mira.” “Yes?” “Think of a number.” She frowned. “Why?” “Don't tell me.” She did. Adrian watched her. Nothing. No pattern. No instinctive answer. He could predict where she would look, how long she would hesitate, even which hand she would move first. But the number itself? Nothing. “Seven?” he guessed. Mira smiled faintly. “Forty-one.” “Good.” Vanessa looked confused. “How is being wrong good?” “Beca
ch-38 The Father at Station One
“Alexander.” Adrian tightened his grip on the radio. Nobody in the room moved. Cassian’s face changed first. “That’s impossible.” Nathan’s weak voice crackled through the speaker. “Tonight has made that word useless.” Vanessa quietly nodded. “Finally, someone said it.” Adrian ignored her. “Which Alexander?” Silence. Then Nathan answered. “I don't know.” “Ghost?” The isolated console flickered. “King Protocol cognitive signature is no longer detectable through available local records.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “When did we lose it?” “During your direct cognitive contact.” When Alexander had removed the lock from Adrian’s Anti-King. When he had said— Goodbye, son. Adrian looked toward Celeste. “Could King Protocol have transferred through me?” “No.” “Marcus?” She hesitated. “The bridge passed through his Finance interface.” Marcus immediately looked at his hand. “But Finance is clean.” “Now,” Adrian said. Marcus understood. King Protocol might have used t
ch-39 The Body Behind the Door
“Your body.” Adrian stared at Alexander. For a second, the words made no sense. Then they made too much. “My body is standing here.” Alexander’s gaze remained fixed on the small hand reaching through the gap. “Your current body.” Adrian’s voice hardened. “Explain.” Behind the black door, the child whispered again. Adrian… Mira tightened her grip on his arm. “Don't go closer.” He didn't. Not yet. Alexander stepped toward the door. “Thirty-one years ago, Station One could move physical matter between possible states. Nathan used it to save me from the Crown Chamber.” “You said that already.” “What I didn't tell you is that the process had been tested before.” Adrian understood. “On me.” Alexander nodded. Elena went pale. “No.” Alexander looked at her. “You didn't know.” “Don't.” “Elena—” “Don't tell me what I knew about my own son.” “You knew what happened at Center Nine.” “Yes.” “You didn't know what happened afterward.” Adrian stepped between them. “St
ch-40 The Night House Vale Fell
Whatever Adrian had forgotten, both his parents were afraid of him remembering it. That was enough. He looked at Elena first. “Tell me.” She said nothing. “Now.” Alexander stepped forward. “Adrian, this is not the time.” Adrian turned toward him. “You've both used that sentence my entire life.” The black door shifted behind them. Three centimeters. Maybe slightly more. Oracle whispered through the gap. They will lie. Adrian didn't look at it. “Stay out of this.” A soft laugh came from beyond Station One. I already know the answer. “Good for you.” Then Adrian looked back at his mother. “Elena.” Her eyes were wet. “House Vale did not fall in one night.” “That's not what I asked.” “No.” “But it matters.” “Then make it matter quickly.” She flinched. Adrian felt cruel. He also felt tired of being protected by lies. Elena took a breath. “Alexander had already lost control of several internal systems before the attack. The Empty Throne had turned against him.
