CHAPTER 51
The Grey Lands, The Estate, June 1, 2021Vopros and I were sitting in the Master's workshop.I was busy building a device that might—if everything went according to plan—be capable of condensing necro-energy with impressive efficiency.Vopros, meanwhile, was doing what Vopros did best.Complaining.“...I still don't understand it,” he grumbled. “We're wasting our time building useless contraptions that nobody needs when we could've simply broken into the Master's vault and made a fortune.”“Please be quiet,” I said without looking up. “You're distracting me.”The cat immediately fell silent. That was one of the advantages of having a written agreement with him. We had officially entered into what the system called the Dushny-Vopros Pact.Yes, that was its actual name in our list of active agreements. While taking a break from the painstaking work, I opened the pact and read through it again. The Dushny-Vopros PactArticle 1. The High Contracting Parties undertake to inform each other
CHAPTER 52
The Grey Lands, The Estate, June 3, 2021 As usual, I failed to finish the mysterious contraption on schedule. There were several reasons for that.First, working with graphite wasn't nearly as easy as it sounded.Second, I was being cautious. The first problem resulted in a considerable amount of wasted material, which increased my theoretical debt to the Guardian. The second made that debt even worse.Instead of building the box with the two layers of graphite I'd originally planned, I ended up using five. Better safe than sorry. Now the finished box sat in the Estate's backyard. And Vopros and I were standing there, staring at it. Neither of us seemed particularly eager to start the experiment.“Worst-case scenario, we simply transfer some of the necromantic energy from my pendant into this artifact,” I said, mostly thinking aloud. “There'll be losses, obviously, but it should
CHAPTER 53
Holy shit.I swallowed hard.Bettis climbed out of the sarcophagus and walked toward the far-left corner of the room, leaving dusty footprints behind her. She pressed a hidden panel.A moment later, a secret cabinet opened in the wall. Inside were various items buried beneath decades of dust.Bettis pulled out a pair of briefs and put them on. Then she wrapped a long strip of gray fabric around the area where her breasts should have been. After that came leather trousers and a jacket. The outfit might have passed for biker gear if not for the distinctly medieval design.Too many straps. Too much elaborate stitching. Patterns that had absolutely nothing to do with motorcycles. And, naturally, no zippers. She finished the outfit by tying a leather bandana around her bald head and fastening it with a strap behind her neck. Until then, the only people I'd encountered in the Grey Lands were the dead—either naked or dressed in medieval cloth
CHAPTER 54
The Grey Lands, Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere, June 5, 2021We didn't get anywhere before dark. Still, according to the map, we'd have a perfect place to spend the night tomorrow: the ruins of some former urban-type settlement.“Excellent time to distribute the points you earned,” Vopros reminded me. “How many levels did you gain from the Estate?”“Four,” I replied. “Fifty-six skill points and one stat point.”“I'd put the stat point into Wisdom,” Vopros advised. “And split all the skill points between Necromancy and Dark Arts.”I agreed about the stat. The skills made sense too. If I intended to study something, I might as well invest in it. Twenty-eight points into Necromancy. Twenty-eight into Dark Arts.“Done,” I told Vopros. Then another question occurred to me.“By the way, what's the maximum level for skills? And what exactly do they give you?”“Are you really too lazy to read?” the cat sighed. He'd already sprawled across the backpacks and was preparing to take a nap.“Re
CHAPTER 55
“Pal Petrovich!” I shouted. “We've got a situation!”I knew perfectly well that the last thing anyone lying on a morgue gurney wanted to hear was:We've got a situation! But this really was a situation.“Pal Petrovich!”I called again, sweeping the flashlight beam across the other gurneys. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a sudden movement.A rasping growl. And then—Blinding pain exploded through my neck.“AAAAAH, FUCK!”I threw off the wool blanket and sat bolt upright.“Fuuuuuck!”I gasped for air.“A dream!”I pressed a hand against my chest.“Jesus Christ, it was a dream!”“What the hell are you screaming about?”Vopros sounded thoroughly annoyed.“I had a nightmare,” I admitted. “A fucking realistic one.”
CHAPTER 56
CHAPTER 56 (14)For another hour or so, someone continued eating. Eventually, the sounds faded. Then came the footsteps retreating across the sand.“He’s gone,” Vopros said.“What the hell was that?”“Another living person came to the ruins,” the cat replied. “Unfortunately, he ran into a corpse.”He paused.“Not an ordinary corpse, though. From what I heard, the dead man stabbed his victim with something sharp and then ate him. That’s about it.”“Is that normal around here?”“You still haven’t figured that out?” Vopros asked in return.Yeah. I probably should have figured it out a long time ago.“But I’ve never heard of corpses using weapons.” I shook my head.“The Red Moon raises all kinds of people,” Vopros began explaining. “Some spent their entire lives as farmers. Others were craftsmen. Some were warriors. If the last group is thrown into the portal while their bodies are still relatively intact, they retain some of their skills when they’re raised.”He gave me a meaningful look
CHAPTER 57
“What do I do with the corpse?” I asked.“Cast the spells the way the book says.” Vopros barely glanced up. “The important thing is to preserve the head.”He remained completely focused, using the claw of his right paw to make tiny adjustments to one of the concentrators inside the ritual circle.I’d accumulated quite a collection of spell diagrams while studying the specialized literature, and I’d painstakingly memorized them.So the first thing I did was cast Dead Stasis on the corpse’s head. The spell temporarily halted the decomposition of the brain.Technically, it was already too late to save him. The kid was well and truly dead, and irreversible processes had already begun in his brain. But I still needed to preserve whatever was left.I pressed my index fingers against the dead boy’s temples, moving the other fingers through a complicated seque
CHAPTER 58
At a certain stage, nigredo became extremely chemically reactive, which meant the material used to handle it had to meet certain requirements. The spoon would eventually be ruined, just like the pot, but there was no avoiding it.I could have used gold, of course.Unfortunately, I didn't exactly have a collection of precious ritual utensils lying around.Silver, incidentally, was forbidden. For some reason, silver was deadly to undead, and nigredo prepared in a silver container simply didn't work once it entered an undead bloodstream.Apparently, the roots of this phenomenon came from the same place as the old vampire fear of silver.Well, vampires were undead too, so I suppose it made sense.I left the nigredo to mature and went back to stitching the blood vessels. The cat had been busy working on his own ritual circle the entire time.“Can't I come with you?” I asked.“I wouldn't recommend it,&
CHAPTER 59
CHAPTER 59 (15)It might look like I had made the decision to experiment on this dead kid rather easily, especially since he hadn't done anything wrong. The truth was, I'd spent a long time fighting myself over it.The Anatoly from my old world had been locked in a brutal argument with the Anatoly I had become.A doctor's ethics. Basic human morality. The simple, instinctive fear of what would happen if I crossed certain lines. All of it stood against what I was doing now.But in the end, that other Anatoly—the one who wanted to get out of this miserable situation alive and in one piece—had won.So I would raise as many corpses as necessary.I would kill anyone who tried to threaten my way of life or take what was mine.I'd cross that line again.I'd rethink my values again.I'd force myself to understand things I hadn't understood before.

Holy shit.Something clicked inside Gennady. It was as if someone had suddenly flipped a switch. The corpse opened its eyes.“Hello, friend…”I gave him an uncertain smile.“I'm pretty sure you're not particularly happy to see me, but we're going to be working together for a while.”Gena didn't answer. Not only because he couldn't. He didn't want to talk.“Get into the harness. We're leaving.”I gave him the command.Gena said nothing. But he stood up and walked toward the sled. Despite my concerns, he understood the instruction perfectly and correctly slipped into the sled harness.I stared at the undead man.Volobuyev Gennady AnatolyevichLevel: 10That was disappointingly uninformative. Maybe there was more information somewhere in the menu? There hadn't been anything useful when I'd raised the rat, but a rat was a
