Threat perception
Owen staggered backward.Three gashes appeared across his chest. A hiss escaped his lips.It burned. It stung like hell.Owen gritted his teeth.Eight mutant cats. One was wounded from his previous attack. Seven others were still unharmed. He took a fighting stance again, his twin short blades raised in his hands. The mutant cats rounded him, baring their fangs. Then the first one charged.Owen slashed at it with his sword. The cat twisted its body in midair, narrowly avoiding the blade.Owen's eyes widened.Too fast! The mutant cat landed behind him and immediately spun around. Its claws came for his back.Owen hurriedly turned.Clang! His blade caught the claws, but the force sent him stumbling sideways.Another mutant cat lunged.Owen ducked. Its claws passed over his head.He thrust h
Head Eater I
Just when Owen was thinking about what to do with his damaged armor, another system message appeared before his eyes.| Armour durability: 55/100 || Unequip armour to restore and repair it || Yes/No |Owen blinked. Then the corners of his lips slowly lifted.“Just what I needed.”“Yes.”The command barely left his mind before a bright halo surrounded his body.A second later, the light vanished. His armor was gone.In its place was the old outfit he had picked up from the boutique before entering the rift.Owen looked himself over.No armor. No weapons.Nothing that could immediately raise questions. He reached for his pockets and felt the eleven energy orbs he had wrapped and hidden carefully.Still there. He let out a quiet breath. If only he had a storage ring like those immortal cultivators in web novels. That would make things a lot easier. He pulled out his phone. His shift was already over.Owen walked into the supermarket and woke up the third man for his watch before findin
Head Eater II
[Head Eater][As the name implies, this creature feeds on heads. Be it other monsters or humans.]“Above us!”Owen threw himself to the side.Something pale dropped from the branches overhead and slammed into the ground with a dull thud, sending dried leaves scattering in every direction. The creature slowly lifted itself. Its skin was pale white, stretched tightly over its body. Not a single strand of hair covered its skin, except for the long mass of black hair spilling from its head and hanging almost to its waist. Two crimson eyes stared at the group. Its hands were long and unnaturally thin, each finger ending in a curved, razor-sharp claw. Then it opened its mouth.Rows of jagged teeth filled its entire mouth.Owen's eyes narrowed. The creature had no legs. From the waist down, its body narrowed into a thick, serpentine tail that curled across the forest floor. It slowly raised its upper body until it was standing upright. No attack. No sudden movement. It simply stared.Owen ti
Battling a Head Eater
The first Head Eater lunged at the group. The others followed.Six humans immediately raised their weapons.Steel flashed.Arrows sliced through the air.Fire erupted from Becky’s hands. But the Head Eaters twisted and leapt between the attacks with frightening speed. One ducked beneath a sword swing before springing sideways. Another bent its body at an unnatural angle, allowing an arrow to whistle past its ear.Owen tightened his grip around his short blades. The Head Eater in front of him towered over seven feet tall. Its pale, hairless body rippled as it moved, while its long black hair swayed behind its head.Owen lowered his stance.Too fast.He watched its tail. Then its shoulders. He needed an opening.A tiny figure zipped past him.Kai’s elemental spirit flew toward the monster, electricity crackling around its small body.At barely thirty centimeters tall, the spirit looked like nothing more than an annoying fly beside the towering creature.Zap!Lightning struck the ground.
F Rank Awakened
BAM!The blow caught him across the ribs.He flew sideways and crashed into the ground.Pain exploded through his side.He coughed. For a moment, he couldn't breathe.Damn...The Head Eater turned toward him.A shadow fell over Owen.It raised one claw. Then—“Get away from him!”The archer released an arrow.Whoosh! The arrow struck the monster in the shoulder causing it to stagger. The archer quickly reached for another arrow. The Head Eater ripped the first one out.Its gaze locked onto him.The archer's hands trembled.“Come on...”He drew another arrow. The monster disappeared. His eyes widened.“Where—”A pale hand appeared in front of him.Slash!Three claws ripped across his chest.“ARGH!”The archer dropped his bow and fell backward.Blood soaked through his clothes.Rose stared in horror.“Everyone, spread out!”Too late. The Head Eater charged again.Rose threw both hands forward.Vines erupted from the ground and wrapped around its waist. The monster dragged her along with
Stage and ranks ahead of others
“Allocate twenty points to each attribute.” Owen's eyes flickered across the screen. Host : Owen Wilson Race : Human Stage : Awakened Rank : F Strength : 70/100 Agility : 80/100 Stamina : 70/100 Endurance : 70/100 | Total stat points remaining : 7 | | Congratulations! While others are still in the stage of mortality and by design of the Universal Trial System would only become Awakened after closing the rift, due to the uniqueness of the Origin System, the host, having killed numerous rift monsters, has begun his journey to immortality. | Owen read the message once. Then again. His eyes slowly moved across the screen. Awakened. The corner of his lips lifted. Everyone else would have to wait until they left the rift. He didn't. A quiet laugh escaped his lips. One step ahead. His eyes shifted toward the others. They were still exhausted from the battle, some nursing their wounds while others checked their damaged equipment. Owen's grin widene
The Goblin Mountain
Very early the next morning, the group woke, ate a few rations, and set off toward their destination—the Goblin Mountains. The journey had already taken them through two completely different environments. On the first day, they had crossed a vast wasteland filled with abandoned buildings, rusted vehicles, and crumbling infrastructure. The remains of the old world had been scattered everywhere, silent reminders of the civilization that had once inhabited the land. The previous day had been the forest. Tall trees had blocked out much of the sunlight, while strange creatures had lurked between the branches and bushes. Every step had required caution. Now, on their third day, the scenery had changed once again. Rocks stretched across the landscape as far as the eye could see. Large boulders jutted from the ground like the remains of ancient giants, while cracks and openings in the rocky terrain revealed dark caves hidden beneath the mountains. The further they traveled, the
Goblin General arrives
The goblins were not more than four to five feet tall."Why's this rift filled with very ugly monsters." A soldier said with his sword in his hands.Owen's eyes narrowed."Get ready!" Becky shouted. The goblin holding the sword suddenly pointed it toward them."RAAAAH!"The goblins roared. Then—Whoosh!Dozens of arrows flew through the air."Barrier!"A young man near the center of the formation immediately stepped forward. He raised both hands."Barrier Wall!"A transparent blue wall appeared in front of the group.Clang!Clang!Clang! The arrows slammed into the barrier. Some bounced off.Others shattered against its surface. The young man gritted his teeth."That was close."Becky glanced at him."Good job, Marcus."Marcus nodded. His class was simple but useful.Barrier.It was a class under the support category. He could create temporary barriers capable of blocking physical attacks. But the ability had a weakness. It consumed a large amount of energy. And the stronger the attac
Flirting on the battlefield?
"The rest of you, deal with the other goblins. Owen, the two of us will handle the Goblin General,” Becky said.“Kai, don’t get close to the goblins.” Owen glanced over his shoulder.Kai nodded. His fingers tightened around his wand as his eyes moved across the battlefield.Becky stepped toward the Goblin General. She raised both hands.A flicker of orange light appeared between her palms.Fwoom!Flames curled around her fingers before gathering into a spinning ball of fire.Owen drew both of his short blades. The metal caught the light from Becky's flames.“Lieutenant, you're a mage. You need to keep your distance from your opponent,” Owen said, lowering his stance.Becky turned her head toward him.“And you,” she said, narrowing her eyes, “aren't you an assassin? Aren't assassins supposed to be masters of stealth?”The edge of Owen's lips pulled into a smirk.“We are indeed masters of stealth.” He rolled one of his short blades between his fingers before gripping it tightly. “But th
The Sword of Vertyx
While the goblins were distracted by the fight, Owen seized the opportunity. He ducked behind a large boulder, keeping his body low as arrows and spells flew across the battlefield. Using the rocks and other rocky structures as cover, he slipped farther away from the fighting. His eyes remained fixed on the mountain entrance.There.The entrance was carved directly into the front of the mountain, its dark opening almost hidden beneath the shadows.Owen tightened his grip on his weapon and hurried toward it.A flight of stone stairs had been carved into the mountain's surface. The edges were worn and cracked, as though countless feet had passed over them for more than a century.Owen placed one foot on the first step. Then another. He climbed quickly.Ten feet.A low growl came from below.Owen froze. He slowly turned his head. One of the goblins was staring directly at him.Its yellow eyes widened."RAAAH!"The goblin pointed toward the mountain.Several others turned. The Goblin Gene
