Moonlily City had survived wars, bad governors, three royal successions, and a baker's guild riot that had lasted six astonishing days.It had never survived Elias Vane looking at it with mild interest. The city's defensive array faded from the sky like mist under sunlight. For one breath, every citizen on the festival streets stared upward, waiting to understand whether that was supposed to happen. Then griffins screamed beyond the eastern wall.A hundred riders crossed the sky in formation, armor flashing, wings hammering the air hard enough to send banners snapping from rooftops. At their head rode Commander Howard Vale, a blond knight with a polished spear, a perfect jaw, and the kind of heroic posture that made crowds gasp before he said a single word.Elias watched him from beside a tea stall. He had acquired two honey cakes, a paper cup of iced milk, and the irritating knowledge that modern festival vendors used artificial strawberry flavoring with the confidence of criminals.

Arxius had imagined many possible reactions to his arrival.Screaming.Praying.Heroic resistance.A noble commander offering his life for the innocent while Arxius tore him apart in front of a horrified crowd. He had not imagined a young man in apprentice robes offering notes on theatrical delivery."You," the demon said slowly, "are not afraid."Elias considered this."I am afraid of many things. Paperwork. Dawn training. Aggressive library fines. But not your introduction."Arxius's grip tightened around his own head."I am a high lord of the Abyss.""Yes.""A devourer of cities.""Mm.""A nightmare spoken of in seventy-two battle hymns.""You should have stopped at devourer. Stronger pacing."One of the soldiers made a small choking sound.Arxius raised his giant blade."I will enjoy killing you."The blade came down.Elias leaned aside without standing. The blade missed him by an inch, struck the fruit stall, and crushed the table. For a moment, no one moved.Elias looked at the

After Elias ate the fire lord's core, the city began worshipping him. This was inconvenient.Soldiers dropped to their knees along the walls. Civilians cried in doorways. A child pointed at him and shouted that an angel had come to save them. Someone else called him a god.Elias stared at them, chewing.''Bad. Very bad. I was supposed to remain forgettable.''He wiped his fingers on a napkin and lifted one hand."Small correction," he said.He snapped his fingers.Memory moved through Moonlily like a soft wind.Every ordinary mind that had seen him fight blurred, folded, and rewrote itself. The image of Elias sitting at a fruit stand faded. In its place appeared the Radiant Sovereign blazing across the sky, holy wings spread, divine light driving back the Abyss. The citizens gasped awake."The Radiant Sovereign saved us!""The holy guardian remembered the Violet line!""Praise the sacred beast!"Nia was too far away to feel the spell, but she saw the result. Across the city walls, tho

Vivian saw the truth in pieces. A crown in Elias's hand. A shadow of a taller man behind him, robed in violet war-cloth and crowned under a sky full of burning gods. The Sword Golem kneeling. The Blooddomain Lord trying to flee. Her heart knew before her mind dared say it. Elias Vane was not connected to the First King. He was the wound history had failed to close. The Blooddomain Lord hurled itself back toward the Abyssal gate. Its body twisted, eyes bursting, mouths screaming prayers to powers it had never respected until this moment. Elias flexed one finger. The demon stopped. Stone-black crystal spread across its flesh. It crawled from limb to limb, sealing mouths mid-scream, freezing eyes in terror. The Blooddomain Lord fought with the strength of a being that had devoured cities. It accomplished nothing. "You came for a spark," Elias said. "Take the lesson instead." He closed his hand. The demon shattered. Not explod

Elias refused to teach Vivian. He did so politely, firmly, and with the confidence of a man who believed the matter settled.Vivian ignored him.The next morning, she arrived at Nia's temporary quarters with the Sword Golem, two notebooks, three sharpened pencils, and the moonlily hairpiece glowing with old Violet power."I am here for training," she announced.Elias looked at Nia."Master, surely you will explain that rulers are busy."Nia poured tea."Rulers must be educated.""By someone else.""You are available.""I am injured.""Yesterday you were healed.""Emotionally injured."Vivian sat across from him."I need to understand what attacked us. The Blooddomain Lord came for my family's crown. That means others may come too."Elias opened his mouth.Nia's eyes narrowed. He closed it.''She is not wrong. Annoying.''"Fine," he said. "One lesson. The Abyss is not one nation. It is a heap of ambitious disasters pretending hierarchy exists. Demon lords serve greater demons because t
