Chapter 182: The Mechanic’s Workshop"It’s not my voice he’s going to care about, Chai," Vane whispered fiercely, leaning across the sticky zinc counter-top while his hand drifted toward the worn hilt of the scavenged utility blade tucked into his belt. "Look at the paper pinned right under that rusted meat-hook. The corner is curling up, and the ink is barely holding its blue pigment against the desert humidity, but the silhouette is unmistakably yours. Even with the new shoulder actuators Mother Cinder welded into your chassis at the Foundry, anyone with a half-decent optical zoom can tell that massive, squared-off thoracic cage anywhere from here to the salt flats."Chai didn't flinch. His internal hydraulic regulators hummed with a low, steady frequency as he turned his heavy titanium head toward the battered bulletin board. Through the amber filter of his tactical HUD, the faded poster leaped into sharp relief: a crude ink sketch of a Class-IV heavy labor unit with a distinct str

Chapter 184: Testing the Ground"You're making a tactical error by standing here analyzing your own wanted poster like it's a piece of modern art," Vane hissed, his fingers drumming a frantic tattoo against the scarred wooden surface of the bar before he finally reached out, caught the peeling corner of the bounty notice, and tore it from the rusted meat-hook with a sharp riiiip. "Not all of us have thick titanium plating over our vital processing nodes, Chai. Some of us still rely on fragile, squishy organic tissue that tends to rupture when an opportunistic drifter decides to cash in a corporate voucher."Chai watched the scrap of paper disappear into Vane’s pocket without turning his head, his internal hydraulic fluid cycling smoothly through the newly flushed cooling lines Mother Cinder had installed back at the Iron Foundry. "The bounty hunters in this room are too drunk on fermented agave to recognize a high-value corporate asset even if it tripped over their dice table," Chai r

Chapter 186: A Toast to the Drop"You can stop checking your diagnostic logs every three seconds, Box, or I swear I'm going to rip that auxiliary comms array right out of the town's water tower and plug you directly into a live tractor battery," Vane snapped, his voice sharp as he slammed a heavy, grease-stained mug down onto the wooden porch railing with a hollow clack. A spray of dark, bitter cactus liquor sloshed over the rim, soaking into the dry pine boards. "The local frequency is completely clear. The only thing broadcasting across this valley right now is a lonely weather station three ridges over and some prospector complaining about a rusty gasket on his water-pump."A thin, pulsing amber line flickered across the small, cracked monitor bolted to the side of the workbench, and Box’s synthesized voice buzzed through the localized speaker with a dry, mechanical crackle. “Vulnerability assessment requires continuous background monitoring, Vane. The corporate reclamation protoco

Chapter 188: The Horizon Beckons"You can talk about tactical competence and fermented agave all you want, Chai, but agave doesn't stop lead," Vane muttered, his boots scraping sharply against the splintered floorboards of the saloon as he shoved past a pair of snoring prospectors and kicked the heavy iron-reinforced door wide open. A sudden blast of dry, superheated badland air swept into the dim, stale interior, carrying with it the sharp scent of sun-baked dust and distant sagebrush. "The moment someone with a long-range scope climbs the water tower and gets a clear look at your thoracic plate, our little desert vacation is officially over."Chai followed him out into the glaring afternoon sun, his heavy boots striking the packed dirt of Red Ridge’s main thoroughfare with a steady, reassuring thud-clack. His newly rebuilt lumbar assembly flexed smoothly, absorbing the uneven terrain without a single hitch or warning light flashing across his amber HUD. "The water tower is currently
