Dawn broke gray and quiet over a valley that had survived, though survival looked considerably more battered than victory should have felt.Bran woke in the healing tent to find Rathorn seated beside his cot, exhaustion carved deep into every line of the older man's face. "You've been asleep most of the morning," Rathorn said. "Mirelle insisted you needed it more than answers did."Bran pushed himself upright slowly, his body aching in places he hadn't known could ache. "Darrow?""Alive. Secured, under guard, recovering slowly under Mirelle's care." Rathorn's expression remained carefully unreadable. "His remaining forces retreated at dawn, leaderless and demoralized. We've had no further contact from them since."Relief loosened something tight in Bran's chest, though it tangled immediately with everything else still churning there. "And the council? What are they saying, about keeping him alive?""Divided," Rathorn admitted. "Some believe mercy toward a man who caused this muc

That afternoon, the council chamber seemed smaller, devoid of the tumultuous urgency that had pervaded it for months. Iron weights held down the corners of the dark oak table, which had no map of the valley attached to it. There were no scouts standing close to the threshold, waiting to report shifting troop movements while the mud dried on their boots. Only Bran and Rathorn were seated at the head of the long table, listening to the heavy, sluggish settling of a battle that had finally run out of pressing demands.Rathorn remarked, "You look like a man who hasn't slept well in weeks."Bran answered, "I haven't." Rubbing his eyes, he felt the bruised flesh under his lower lashes and the dull ache behind his brow. The stone wall cracks beneath the siege engines each time I close them. I see Wardiron pulsating in a way that feels completely off, and Darrow staring up at me from the mud. With his arms resting on the carved wooden armrests, Rathorn reclined. Bran, that recollection will g

The council met once more the next morning, the hall chilly and silent before the afternoon sun could touch the narrow glass windows. For the first time since he had been captured, Darrow Ashe was in the chamber. He sat beneath a light guard close to the back wall, his dark woolen tunic clean yet plain. His shoulder remained bandaged beneath his coat, and his bearing was careful and upright, completely drained of the heavy arrogance he had shown during the siege.Rathorn began the session without formality, laying his broad hands flat upon the oak table. "We have come to the point where a final decision about the prisoner must be made. Bran has requested mercy on the grounds that Darrow gave up his command once his lines broke and may hold information we cannot afford to lose. Others on this council have called for immediate execution or permanent confinement. Darrow, you asked to speak to the hall before we proceed to a hand-count. Speak now."Darrow stood up slowly, careful not to p

The valley started to feel like a place worth staying in once more, and Bran noticed these changes in little, ordinary ways over the next few days. Children's laughter spread through the terraces as their parents let them play for a short time instead of doing work. The real smell of thick stew, not just watery soup, came from the shared kitchens as the first slow deliveries arrived from farms that had finally stopped worrying about the danger. Guards were swapping jokes at their posts instead of keeping a watchful eye on the horizon, as the constant, heavy fear of the siege had been with them all the time.Bran found himself sitting with Sela one afternoon in the upper courtyard, where she was going through the updated harvest records for the valley."You look lighter," Sela said, not lifting her eyes from her paper."I feel lighter," Bran admitted."Strange, considering everything still unresolved." Darrow's information still being verified. Emrys's offer still waiting. Wardiron's na

Three days after Bran finished reading his father's journal, Rathorn called a smaller meeting in the side room next to the main hall, not the whole council, but a more quiet group meant to figure out where the valley really was now that the immediate problems from the siege were starting to go away.Outside, the mountain sun broke through the morning mist, sending long, pale yellow beams through the narrow slits in the walls. In the courtyards, the work of rebuilding went on steadily: the steady beat of mason hammers, the scraping of shovels removing burned wood, and the quiet shouts of workers fixing the bottom gatehouse. Inside, the chamber had a smell of old paper, wet stone, and the strong smell of cedar oil, which was used to clean and shine the long wooden table around which they stood.Rathorn said, "Darrow's information has been fully checked," and then placed a brief summary report on the clean surface. He placed his heavy hand on the paper to smooth out the curl."There are t
