31 | The Assassin's Shadow
Morning came gray and still. Allen woke with Seraphina's head on his shoulder, her breathing slow and even. The new house was cold in the way stone houses always were before the sun had a chance to warm them, but under the wool blankets it was warm enough. He didn't move. He lay there, listening to the soft sound of her breath, and let the last traces of sleep fade. His mind was already working. 'Maris and Fendrel. I need to reach them. If the Veton family is already sniffing around, I can't wait for them to show up on their own.' He kept his voice low, barely a whisper. "Violet." The panel opened beside the bed, soft blue. [Violet: Yes, Host?] "Can you contact my followers? Maris and Fendrel. Their class is tied to me now." [Violet: The connection exists, but it is untested. I will attempt to establish communication through the Tyrant's link.] "Do it." [Violet: Understood. Attempting now.] The panel flickered, then settled. Allen waited. Seraphina stirred beside him, her
32 | The Knife at the Glass
The man's eyes moved first. Not to Allen's face. To Silverhowl. Moonlight slid along the sword's edge. The dagger in the man's right hand stayed low beside his thigh, but his grip tightened. Allen didn't give him time to decide what that meant. Eye of Truth answered the moment he focused. [Name: Tomas Grel] [Level: 79] [Rank: D] Allen's gaze hardened. Level 79. 14 levels above him, with a formal D-rank to match. That killed any idea that Tomas was a disposable watcher. He'd found a D-rank Hunter at Seraphina's window, and the man still hadn't panicked with a sword behind him. "Drop it." Tomas blinked. Then the corner of his mouth twitched. "Huh." His eyes climbed to Allen's face. "So you're Allen." Allen said nothing. Tomas glanced toward the open bedroom window behind him. The curtain moved faintly in the night air. "They said you were an F-rank." A breathy laugh slipped out of him. "Guess they left out the part where you creep around like a fucking cat." "The dagger." "Y
33 | First Name
Tomas stared up at him from the dirt. For a few seconds, the only answer Allen got was the man's breathing. Rough. Uneven. Every breath tugged at the split in his lip, and every small shift pulled at the belt binding his hands behind his back. Allen waited with Silverhowl low in his right hand. The blade wasn't at Tomas's throat anymore, but it didn't need to be. "Start from the beginning." Tomas spat blood into the dirt. "Already gave you the important part. Oren Veton." "Ren first," Allen said. That made him hesitate. Allen saw it and said nothing. Tomas let out a tired laugh. "Huh... Fine. Your cousin sees you at the market. New house, money, 2 armed men carrying half the damn market behind you. You don't look like the kicked dog he remembers." He shifted, winced, then went still again. "Ren runs home. Tells his father something changed. Oren wants eyes on it. He hires me." Allen's gaze stayed on him. "For what?" Tomas's mouth twitched. "To watch." "Did Oren order an attac
34 | 12 Hours of Weight
The tremor started in Allen's sword hand. Small. Annoying. Easy to ignore if he didn't look at it. He looked anyway. Silverhowl's point rested near the kitchen floor beside his chair. The blade was steady enough. His fingers weren't. A fine shake ran through them, stopped, then came back when he tightened his grip. Across the room, Tomas noticed too. Of course he did. The D-rank Hunter sat against the interior wall with his wrists bound behind him by his own belt. His split lip had dried dark at the corner of his mouth. Every time he shifted, his injured right wrist made his mouth tighten. He still found enough breath to grin. "That's ugly," Tomas said. "Whatever the hell you did out there... looks like it bites back." Maris turned from the back-door line. His eyes dropped to Allen's hand. "Boss." "I know." Fendrel stayed between Tomas and the easiest way out of the kitchen, mace low in both hands. He glanced at Allen. "Good chair," he said. Maris stared at him. "That's w
35 | Route He Was Paid to Use
The charcoal line came out crooked. Allen stared at it for a beat, then kept writing. The flat piece of split firewood rested across his left palm. His right hand dragged the blackened stick over the pale grain, leaving short, ugly marks that were still clear enough under Night Vision. Across the wood he'd already scratched Oren, 2 nights, east delivery lane, weighing post, first light, and balance after final report. Across the kitchen, Tomas watched the tremor in Allen's fingers with tired amusement. "That's your record?" he asked. His eyes dropped to Allen's shaking hand. "Piece of fucking firewood and bad handwriting?" Allen looked up. "Again. Who pays you?" Tomas's head fell back against the wall. "Oren Veton hired me. His man pays the rest after I give the final report. Same answer as before." "Where?" "Market. East delivery lane, beside the public weighing post. First light." "What goes in the report?" Tomas breathed out through his nose. "Who comes by. What you buy.
36 | Windows and Trap
Allen's hand stayed still on Silverhowl's hilt. A man had been waiting for Tomas before he arrived. That was useful. It still wasn't enough. 'Violet. Fendrel. Keep watching. Don't move unless Tomas moves first. Tell me what they actually do.' [Violet: Message sent.] Fendrel's acknowledgement came back through the follower link, short enough that Allen barely had time to settle back in the chair. He waited. The kitchen had gone pale with first light. Silverhowl rested across his knees, its weight familiar and irritating against muscles that hadn't forgiven him for the night. The wounds in his side had closed, but the soreness remained. So did the faint tremor in his fingers whenever he let them relax. Rapid Regeneration had repaired flesh. It hadn't given him a new body. Allen listened to the quiet house and did nothing. That was the difficult part. He could send Maris or Fendrel into the meeting, or leave Seraphina and cross the city himself. Any of those would tu
37 | A House Worth Defending
The front-door latch clicked behind Allen. He stood there for a moment with his hand still on it.The lock worked. The door was solid. Stone walls. Proper roof. A house he'd paid 50 Star Gold for because it had felt safe compared to the shack they'd crawled out of.Tomas had still reached Seraphina's bedroom window.Allen let go of the latch."Boss?"Maris was in the front room near the window, short sword sheathed at his side. He'd been trying to look casual and failing badly enough that Allen almost respected the effort."Anything?" Allen asked."Nothing. Front stayed quiet. Back too." Maris glanced past him. "Fendrel?""Outside."As if summoned by the insult of being discussed, Fendrel's boots scraped against the stone path beyond the door. He'd walked back from the Guard post with Allen, mace over his shoulder, and hadn't complained.Annoying man.Allen's side pulled when
38 | Weight on Her Feet
Seraphina's knees folded. Allen caught her before she could hit the floor. Allen locked an arm around her waist. His other hand caught her hip through her soft white cotton nightgown, taking the weight before her legs lost the rest of it. Her breath jumped against his shoulder. The drop had been small, but his stomach still tightened at how quickly her legs had vanished beneath her. He kept his grip firm until he felt the mattress under her again. "Easy. I've got you." Her fingers dug into his shirt. Allen lowered her back onto the edge of the bed. The mattress dipped beneath her, and for a moment neither of them moved. Morning light came through the curtains behind him. The breakfast tray was already gone, and she'd rested after eating instead of trying to turn the meal into another exercise. Her color was better than it had been weeks ago, her hands steadier, her back strong en
39 | Badge That Lied
Seraphina was still glaring at the badge.Allen picked it up from the bedside table and turned the little piece of metal between his fingers.F-rank.The letter stamped into it hadn't changed since the Guild first registered him. At the time, it had been generous. Level 7, weak enough that an angry shopkeeper could probably have thrown him through a door, and no future anyone respectable cared to bet on.Now he was Level 65.The badge had become funny.House Veton using words like fraud made it less funny.Allen looked at Seraphina. "You know, there are easier ways to tell your husband his badge is embarrassing."Her eyes moved from the F to his face. Then she pointed at the badge again."Yeah. I got it the first time."A very small curve touched her mouth.Allen snorted and set the badge back on the table. "Bed first. Guild after."Seraphina gave him a clear nod.

40 | Test Me Once
The evaluator didn't check Allen's Level a third time. That alone improved the morning. He met Allen near the Guild counter with yesterday's challenge record tucked under his arm and jerked his head toward the interior corridor. The old F-rank badge stayed in Allen's right trouser pocket. "Come on." Allen followed. Maris wasn't there, and neither was the clerk. Nobody asked for a third verification. Good. They could get to work. The evaluator pushed open a heavier door near the back of the branch. The room beyond was wider than yesterday's testing room. Stone floor. Plain walls. A rack of blunted practice swords to the right. A low table to the left with ink, paper, and Allen's challenge record waiting on it. Faded chalk marked a broad fighting space through the center. Nothing glowed. Allen approved. The evaluator closed the door behi
