61 | Steps Alone (III)
Allen kept the wheelchair out of the worst street ruts. When the Guild hall came into view, evening traffic had thickened around the mission boards and front desks.A clerk at the rank counter looked up as Allen stopped the chair beside him.The man's eyes went to Allen's badge. Then to Allen's face. Then back to the badge."Please tell me you're here because someone finally got embarrassed."Allen rested an elbow on the counter. "I'm here because I got tired of wearing their embarrassment."The clerk barked a laugh. "Fair. Give me your name."Allen did.The laughter died almost immediately."Right. Quarry file."He disappeared into the records shelves and returned with a thin, worn folder.A gray-haired senior evaluator joined him, looking tired of paperwork. She flipped through the pages."Your Level was verified at 148 before the Quarry." Her finger moved
62 | The Broken Causeway
"Will you join the response?"Allen lowered his gaze to the sealed notice in his hand. The runner was still breathing too hard. He looked like he'd sprinted most of the way here, and whatever answer he wanted, he didn't have the lungs left to dress it up.Allen broke the seal with his thumb. The first line was enough to kill any thought of going back to bed.B-tier regional Gate. Break estimate at dispatch: 2 h 30 min.The response needed 5 registered Hunters. B-rank lead. Allen had been requested for the last open member slot.He kept reading.Base clear bounty: 2,000 Star Gold.Filed split: 20% per registered Hunter.400 Star Gold each if the clear was verified.Entry fee: 0.Special bonus: none filed.Boss Core proceeds were separate and held under the same filed ownership split unless the party later agreed otherwise.Allen glanced up. Rain, shouting, and claws blurred together around him. Calm Mind kept his thoughts distinct. The first Raker slammed into her shield. BANG! Talia's boots skidded over the wet stone. She snarled and drove the shield back into its face. Rhyse stepped off her left shoulder and swept the long axe across the next creature's path, forcing it to check its rush. Jorren's first javelin flashed past Allen's right side and struck a climbing Raker hard enough to turn its head. Kessa's spear punched in immediately after. Allen took the opening that appeared in front of him. A Raker came across his lane with a plated forelimb sweeping wide. There wasn't room to give it the whole causeway. He turned Silverhowl crosswise. Steel met armored mass near the broken parapet. KRAANG! The blade flexed just enough t
64 | Silver Against the Storm
The arch swallowed most of the rain. Not the water.Runoff streamed over the black floor in thin sheets, carrying grit between the stones. Talia went through first with her shield raised. Allen followed just behind her, Silverhowl angled down in his right hand. Jorren kept to the rear-right, his last javelin held short enough that the point wouldn't catch the wall.Thunder rolled outside.Under the stone, it became a dull weight instead of a crack."Left wall," Allen said. "Keep it close. Don't chase anything into the openings."Talia looked back over her shield rim. "I know how walls work.""Good. Saves time."Jorren huffed behind them. "If either of you starts teaching stairs, I'm leaving.""You first," Talia said. The gallery opened along their right side.Broken arches looked down into a flooded lower court. Rain came through gaps in the roof, silver in the dark. Night Vision gave

Instead of staying square against the shield, it drove across her front and forced her onto a patch of broken flagstone beside the fallen column. Her right boot landed badly.Stone shifted.Talia dropped with the shifting stone. The Raker recoiled and lunged toward the exposed side beyond her shield.Allen reached for Shadow Step by instinct.'Not yet.'He ran.Jorren was locked on the other creature. Talia was still trying to get her foot under her. Allen had open ground, but not enough of it.He could reach her with his body a fraction too late.Silverhowl reached farther.'Fine.'He didn't look for a seam. There wasn't time.Allen planted his left foot, drove off it, and cut diagonally into the charging shoulder.KRRANG!The hit jarred his arm from wrist to shoulder. The plate held. The Raker's shoulder kicked sideways under the
66 | The Beast at the End of the Bridge
The creature forced more of its body through the north arch.Stone grated under its weight.Rain ran over a back plated in dark ridges, each one high enough to catch the gray light from the broken roof. The creature's shoulders nearly filled the north opening. Its head hung low between them, heavy-jawed and broad enough that Allen couldn't see the passage behind it anymore.Rhyse didn't move."Keep the line."Allen studied the beast with Eye of Truth.[Name: Stormback Behemoth][Level: 360][Rank: B]'360.'The number landed hard. Calm Mind kept it from turning into panic. It didn't make the gap smaller."Level 360," Allen said.Jorren made a noise somewhere behind him. "Great. Love that."Talia tightened her shield strap. "You can love it after it stops breathing."Kessa lowered her spear farther.Rhyse only said, "Eyes up. Voss takes the front. Tho
67 | The Beast at the End of the Bridge (II)
Kessa pulled her spear free and looked at the dead Behemoth."Boss is down. Sweep first. Core after."Rhyse nodded. "Go ahead."Allen looked at Silverhowl. No bend marked the blade. The guard hadn't shifted. The same small chip from the lower court remained near the forward edge.Nothing else had changed. Still usable. At Level 302, that wasn't as comforting as it should've been.He gave the sword to Dominion Cache only after Rhyse finished checking the north passage and the court stayed quiet. His right hand emptied.Kessa crouched beside the Behemoth with her side knife. She didn't cut blindly. She pressed along the dead creature's chest, shifted her angle, checked again, then opened a careful line between heavier structures.Talia leaned on her shield and watched."Please tell me it's in there.""It's there."Jorren looked up fro
68 | Walk to Me
Allen looked where Seraphina was pointing. The clear strip of floor ran across the front room toward the hall. Nothing stood in the way. The wooden chair was beneath her. The wheelchair stayed locked at her right. He turned back to her. Seraphina lowered her hand. Her eyes didn't leave his. Allen understood enough. He stepped backward.Seraphina's gaze followed him as he crossed the open floor. Allen kept moving until the hall opening sat just behind his left shoulder. Far enough that she couldn't reach him with a lean. Far enough that if she wanted him, she'd have to get there herself.Every part of him disliked the distance. He stopped anyway. Seraphina's chin lifted a fraction. Allen settled his weight. "Your pace. I'll stay right here."A small nod. Then she looked down at her feet. Allen's shoulders tightened. He'd watched her stand. He'd watched her take steps. He'd caught her when her legs finally gave out after she pushed too far.

69 | Walk to Me (II)
She placed her foot, settled, brought the other through, and settled again. Allen kept his mouth shut. The last stretch disappeared beneath her boots. Seraphina stopped in front of him. Close enough now that Allen could reach her without leaning. He didn't. Not yet. Her legs were shaking badly. Her chest rose and fell faster than before. A strand of silver hair had slipped across her cheek, the garnet end brushing the corner of her mouth. But she was upright. There was no chair at her back and no hand holding her. Seraphina looked at him. She didn't reach for him immediately. Seraphina simply stood there in front of him. Her body shook with the effort. Her breathing was a mess compared with the calm control she'd started with. She met his eyes and held them. Allen kept his hands at his sides. Seraphina's gaze dropped to them, then lifted to meet his again. A slow, unmistakably pleased smile spread over her mo

Seraphina took another step toward the hall. Her left hand stayed threaded through Allen's right. She was still pulling him with her, though the pull had become lighter than it had been a moment ago.Allen saw the change in her legs before she acknowledged it. The tremor that had followed her across the front room was spreading upward now, tightening through her thighs whenever her weight settled through a boot. She kept going. Of course she did.Allen let her choose the next step. Then the next. When they reached the short hall, her breath had roughened again. Seraphina slowed. Her fingers tightened around his. Allen moved to her left. His left arm went around her waist and across the back of her hips, firm enough to take the weight she finally let him have. Her body leaned into his side. The handhold never broke. Her right hand stayed loose beside her, not searching for the wall, not grabbing for anything else."Easy. I've got you."
