The safehouse was quiet. Elias sat at the kitchen table, a cold cup of tea untouched in front of him. The new awareness had settled now, no longer screaming, but still present. The threads moved through the room like slow rivers of light, and he could see them all. He could see the difference now. That was the thing. Before, the threads had been lines. Bright or faint, broken or whole. But now they had texture. Weight. Meaning. The thread running through the table was physical. Solid. It anchored the wood to reality. The thread running through the air was thinner, more diffuse. The thread running through Lyra, who sat across from him with her notebook open, was warm, steady, and alive. And there, wrapped around her heart, was the silver thread. It was not connected to anything else. It simply existed, coiled around her like a second pulse. It glowed softly, brighter than any other thread in the room except his own. He had seen it once before, at the end of the book. But now he

The training room was empty. Elias sat alone in the center, his eyes closed, the threads moving around him like slow currents. He had been practicing for hours, pushing his perception further, trying to understand the new senses that had begun to awaken inside him. Thread Sense. Danger Sense. Presence Detection. The names were his own, but they felt right. They described what he was learning to do. He reached out with his awareness. The room unfolded around him. The stone walls. The chalk circle around the thin spot. The wards Seraphine had placed. Each one had its own thread, its own texture. And then he felt it. A presence. Not close. Not threatening. But watching. He opened his eyes. The room was empty. The door was closed. But the feeling remained, a faint pressure at the edge of his awareness, like a hand resting lightly on his shoulder. He stood slowly. The presence did not retreat. It simply waited, patient and still. “Who’s there?” he asked. No answer came. He rea

The call came just before dawn. Seraphine stood in the kitchen, her phone pressed to her ear, her pale eyes fixed on the window. The pocket watch lay on the table beside her. She did not speak for a long moment. Then she said, “Understood,” and hung up. Elias was already awake. He had been awake for hours, watching the threads shift and settle in the darkness. The danger sense had not stirred, but something else had. A quiet alertness. A sense of waiting. “There’s been another breach,” Seraphine said. Adrian sat up from the couch. “Where?” “Downtown. Near the financial district.” She grabbed her coat. “The Veil detected it thirty minutes ago. It’s already sealed itself.” “Sealed itself?” Lyra emerged from the back room. “Breaches don’t seal themselves.” “This one did.” Seraphine’s voice was clipped. “Which means something came through and then closed the door behind it.” Elias stood slowly. “You think it’s still here.” “I think it’s hunting.” ⸻ The financial district was e

The silence after the fight was heavy. Elias stood still, his breath slowly evening out. The mall smelled of dust and smoke. The last traces of the mimics were already fading, their threads unraveling into nothing. The food court was a wreck of broken tables and scorched tiles. Lyra touched his arm. “Are you okay?” He nodded, but the movement was stiff. “Just tired.” Adrian flexed his hand. The ring on his finger still glowed faintly, a dull silver pulse. “That was more of them than I expected.” “Mimics hunt in packs,” Seraphine said. She was already scanning the exits, her silver blade dimming to a faint shimmer. “There will be more. We should leave before they regroup.” Elias did not move. Something was wrong. The danger sense stirred. A whisper at the base of his skull. Not the sharp scream of an immediate threat, but something quieter. Something patient. He turned in a slow circle, scanning the food court. The threads were calm now. Too calm. The mall was silent. Too si

The streets blurred past. Elias ran with the Echo Connection burning in his chest, a thin silver thread pulling him east toward the Hollow District. The others followed close behind. Lyra stayed at his side, Adrian ran several steps behind her, and Seraphine brought up the rear with her silver blade drawn, her pale eyes constantly scanning the shadows. The city was quiet. Too quiet. Streetlights flickered as they passed, casting long shadows across the pavement. Some of those shadows moved in directions they shouldn’t have. Elias barely noticed. He only cared about the thread. It was frayed. Fading. But it was still there. Still alive. Hold on, Mara. I’m coming. They turned a corner. The Hollow District loomed ahead, its sagging buildings black against the night sky. Even from the edge of the district, Elias could feel the difference. The threads were wrong. They had always been wrong here, twisted and unstable, but tonight they were worse. They snarled around buildin
