The hunger arrived not as a sudden, sharp pang, but as a creeping rot. It was the winter of the Great Blight, a season where the sky remained a bruised, permanent violet, and the crops of the valley withered into gray, brittle husks. The wind that whistled through the mountain passes carried the scent of dust and desperation. Outside my walls, the world was starving. Inside, my stores were the only thing keeping the local population from total collapse. My lichen-marrow vats—a slow-growing, nutrient-dense fungus I had spent months cultivating in my lower geothermal vents—were finally at peak maturity.
