The drive back to the city took considerably less time than the trip north had, Jin Rae pushing speeds that would have earned anyone else a citation, both of them silent for most of the journey, turning over the same impossible question. After fifteen years of patient, invisible research, after a name that had haunted Cho's confession and filled the margins of a brittle ledger, Ash had simply walked into a police precinct and asked for him by name."It's a trap," Jin Rae said finally, breaking the silence somewhere past the city's outer districts. "It has to be. Nobody spends fifteen years building something this careful only to surrender voluntarily.""Maybe." He watched the city skyline grow steadily closer, the familiar unease of the unresolved settling deeper into his chest. "Or maybe fifteen years is exactly long enough for someone to grow tired of watching what they built get taken in a direction they never intended.""You think Ash and Xian have split.""I think it's possible.

Meridian Central Transit sprawled beneath the city's financial heart, a labyrinth of platforms and connecting tunnels serving four separate rail lines, a bus terminal, and the underground mall that had grown organically around it over three decades of expansion. Sarin's structural plans, once assembled, revealed exactly the kind of layered, chaotic depth that made any surveillance operation considerably more difficult than the estate or the cathedral catacombs had been."There's no clean way to watch this," Sarin said, spreading the plans across the briefing table, her voice tight with the particular strain of someone who'd spent the last six hours cross-referencing blueprints against modern renovations. "The old subway convergence Ash mentioned sits below the current platforms, sealed off during construction in the nineties. Access points are limited, but the space above it the station itself processes roughly eighty thousand people a day.""Eighty thousand people we can't evacuate w

She closed the final distance faster than he'd anticipated, and the first strike caught him across the jaw before he'd fully registered her movement a blow considerably harder than her frame should have produced, carrying a strength that felt borrowed, amplified, fed by whatever Xian had planted beneath her conscious will.He stumbled back, tasting blood, and raised both hands defensively rather than striking back. "Jin Rae, I'm not fighting you."She didn't answer. Her second strike came low, aimed at his ribs, and he twisted just enough to absorb it rather than deflect it outright, unwilling to counter with anything approaching real force. The blow still landed hard enough to steal his breath, her strength considerably beyond anything she'd shown in training, beyond anything her ordinary body should have carried.~[WARNING: SUBJECT OPERATING UNDER EXTERNAL COMPULSION. PHYSICAL OUTPUT SIGNIFICANTLY AMPLIFIED.]~'I know,' he thought grimly, backing another step as she pressed forward

"For what it's worth," he said, helping her to her feet with careful, deliberate slowness, "you hit considerably harder than I expected. I'm fairly certain that rib you cracked earlier is going to remind me of this for a week."Jin Rae winced, though something in the exhaustion of her expression allowed a faint, reluctant smile through despite everything. "I cracked a rib?""Possibly two. I stopped counting after the fourth strike." He tested his shoulder gingerly, wincing at the deep ache still radiating through it. "You should know, for future reference, that whatever Xian fed you, it made you meaner than usual. And you were already fairly formidable to begin with.""That's not funny, Han.""I'm allowing myself one joke," he said. "I've earned it."She huffed something that might have been a laugh under different circumstances, then sobered almost immediately, her expression clouding as the reality of what had happened settled fully back into place. "I could have killed you.""You d

"I should probably go," he said, though he made no actual move to stand, the couch's cushions considerably more comfortable than the prospect of walking home on ribs that had barely stopped aching."You should probably stay," Yuna countered, studying him with an expression that suggested she'd already decided the matter regardless of what he actually said next. "You're injured. It's late and frankly, I don't trust you to take proper care of yourself once you're back in that apartment alone.""I've managed on my own before.""Managing and actually resting are different things, and you strike me as someone who's terrible at the second one." She stood, already moving toward the kitchen with the particular brisk determination he was beginning to recognize as entirely characteristic of her when she'd decided something needed doing. "Stay. Let me take care of you tonight."He let himself be persuaded, partly because arguing felt like more effort than his aching body currently had to spare,
