Chapter Thirty-Nine“Are you sure the Hawkins don't have anything on you, Philip?” Mark asked.Philip frowned. His brows furrowed slightly. He couldn't quite place his hand on what Mark meant. “What do you mean?” he asked “I mean exactly what I said. You've been digging into their business, their accounts, the DNA test, and now this medical facility. If they have been hiding something for this long, they may have prepared for someone like you to start asking questions.”Philip slowly sat down on the edge of the bed.“I haven't done anything wrong.”“I know that,” Mark replied. “But that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking if there is anything they could use against you.”Philip remained silent. He thought about the contract Elena had given him.The black card, the company and the Hawkins name.He had not in any way given them a way out of the mess Elena created for him..Then his eyes narrowed, “The contract.”“What contract?” Mark asked “The one Elena gave me.” Philip said again M

Chapter forty The door slowly opened. Philip stood there for a few seconds, staring into Elena's room.He had expected to feel nervous, but something else had taken over.Curiosity.He stepped inside and quietly closed the door behind him.Everything looked almost exactly as he remembered it. The large bed was neatly made, the curtains were drawn, and the room was spotless.Philip looked around carefully.“Why would you change the lock if you had nothing to hide?” he whispered. He moved toward the bedside table and opened the first drawer. There was nothing inside it.The second drawer contained some jewelry and a few receipts. He moved to the wardrobe and he searched through the clothes but found nothing unusual.Philip frowned.“Elena wouldn't change the lock just because I searched the room once.”He walked back toward the desk and stared through the neatly stacked files. There were several documents neatly arranged on top of it. Most of them were company papers, but one caught hi

Chapter Forty-OnePhilip stood completely still. Elena remained at the doorway with Ethan beside her, while Tyrel and Sophia stood behind them. Her eyes moved from Philip's face to the room and then back to him.“What are you doing here?” she asked again.Philip swallowed, “I told you. I was looking for something.”Elena stepped into the room, “What exactly were you looking for?”Philip forced himself to remain calm, “My watch. I think I lost it here.” Elena's eyes narrowed. She knew Philip had no business in her study room. “Your watch?” she said, her gaze fixed on him. “Yes.” Philip replied almost immediately.“You lost your watch in my room?”Philip nodded slowly, “I thought I did.”Elena looked around the room, “You could have asked me.”“You were not back and I was not sure you were going to be back this early.” Elena scoffed, “You expect us to stay behind when you bail on us.”Philip almost laughed. “Bailed? You think I wanted to be there with you and your parents?” he aske

Chapter Forty-TwoElena's eyes remained closed for a few seconds before Philip slowly pulled away.Neither of them spoke.Elena opened her eyes and stared at him. Her breathing had changed, and there was confusion written all over her face.“Why did you do that?” she asked quietly.Philip looked at her without saying anything. She stepped closer.“You've spent the past few days telling me you don't trust me. You've been searching my things, accusing me, talking about divorce, and now you kiss me?”Philip forced himself to remain calm, “I don't know.”He knew that was the best way to make sure Elena doesn't get to know about the phone. “You don't know?”He shook his head slightly.“You were getting too close.”Elena frowned.“To what?”Philip's heart jumped. He glanced toward her face, then looked away.“I was tired of arguing.” he said flatly. “That doesn't answer my question.” Elena said back. “I don't have to answer every question you ask.”Elena stared at him.For a moment, she

Chapter Forty-ThreePhilip stared at the screen. The folder was open. For a few seconds, he didn't touch anything. There were only four files inside. His heart began beating faster. The first file had his name written across it.PHILIP ROBERTSON.The second one was simply marked 2009.The third said MEDICAL RECORDS.The last one had no name at all. It was just a string of numbers.Philip frowned, “What the hell is this?” he muttered He looked over his shoulder and the hallway was empty. He quickly opened the first file and a photograph appeared on the screen.Philip froze. It was a picture of him but it wasn't a recent picture. He looked much younger. He was standing outside what appeared to be a hospital, wearing a school uniform. His hair was shorter, and he couldn't have been more than fifteen or sixteen.Philip stared at the photograph in confusion. He had never seen it before. He zoomed in.Someone had written a date underneath the picture.September 14, 2009.Philip's forehead

Chapter Forty-FourPhilip waited until dinner was over before he went upstairs. He had barely stepped into his room when he pulled out the secret phone again. He locked the door behind him and sat on the edge of the bed.His mind was still on the files. He opened the phone again and stared at the four files. His thumb hovered over the one marked 2009.He wanted to open it. More than anything, he wanted to know what happened that year. But something stopped him.If someone had gone through so much trouble to hide these records, there was probably a reason. He locked the phone and placed it on the bed.His own phone vibrated and he picked it up.It was Mark and Philip answered immediately.“Where are you?”“Where am I going to be at this time of the day? I am home.”“Are you alone?” Mark asked Philip glanced toward the bedroom door.“Yes.”Mark lowered his voice, “Then listen carefully. I found something.”Philip sat up. His brows furrowed slightly.“What did you find?”“I went back thr

Chapter Forty-FivePhilip stared at Elena. For a few seconds, he couldn't say anything.A DNA test. After everything that had happened, after all the times she had refused to let him take another test, she was suddenly asking him to do one tomorrow. He narrowed his eyes, “You're serious?”Elena nodded, “Completely. We can have it tomorrow. Isn't that what you have always wanted?” Philip studied her face. He could see that there was no hesitation in her voice. No fear.If anything, she looked strangely calm.“Why did you change your mind so quickly?”Elena walked back toward the bed and placed her glass on the table.“I didn't change my mind. I am barely giving in to what you have always wanted. I thought you were supposed to be thrilled.” Philip frowned, “You refused every time I asked.”“Because you weren't asking for the right reasons.”“What does that mean?”Elena looked at him,“You wanted the test because you had already decided I was lying to you. You wanted something that would

Chapter Forty-SixPhilip drove through the quiet streets without saying a word.Elena sat beside him, watching him from the corner of her eyes. She had expected him to be angry. She had expected him to tell her to stay home but instead, he had agreed almost too easily. That was what bothered her.“Where exactly are we going?” she asked again.Philip kept his eyes on the road. His hand gripped the wheel tightly. “I told you. I'm meeting some friends.” he said “You haven't told me where.” Elena said again. “You'll know when we get there.”Elena frowned, “You've become very secretive lately.”Philip smiled slightly, “Maybe I'm learning from you. Isn't that what you do most of the time?” She stared at him, “I don't like this version of you.”Philip glanced at her briefly, “I'm sure you don't. You should get used to it because I don't plan on changing.” He continued driving. His phone was connected to the car, but he had deliberately turned off the screen so Elena wouldn't see the me

Chapter Forty-Seven“Elena?”Elena remained frozen for a moment. Then the woman who had just entered the room smiled and walked toward her.“Oh my God! Elena Hawkins?”Elena's expression slowly changed as she recognized the woman.“Catherine?”Catherine laughed and pulled her into a hug.“I can't believe it's really you.” she saidElena smiled and hugged her back, “What are you doing here?”“I could ask you the same thing.” Catherine pulled away and looked at her. “You disappeared after you got married. We barely heard from you.”Elena laughed softly.“Life happened.”“Apparently.” Catherine looked around the room. “I haven't seen most of these people in years.”More people entered behind her, greeting Elena one after another.Philip watched from his table. For the first time since they arrived, Elena's attention was no longer completely focused on him.Mark leaned back in his chair and smiled.“You see that?”Philip glanced at him.“What?”“I told you I would handle it.”Philip looke

Chapter Forty eight“Enough about those boys. We are here to have fun.”One of Mark’s old friends dropped two bottles of beer on the table and pulled out a chair.“Can both of you stop looking like you are planning a murder for one night?”Mark laughed while Philip looked at him and shook his head.“You have no idea.” he said with a smirk.“That is exactly why I don't want to know,” the man replied, opening his beer. “Drink.”Philip picked up the bottle, but his mind was still on the phone sitting inside his jacket. The 2009 file.He could not stop thinking about it.Someone had taken his blood when he was younger.Someone had paid for it and somehow, years later, Dr. Hayes appeared in the middle of his DNA test. There had to be a connection. It can't be a coincidence. But he had learned enough to know that rushing into the wrong conclusion could destroy everything.Across the room, Elena was laughing with Catherine and the other women. For the first time that evening, she looked relax
