Chapter 10 Part 2
Kyle stared at her for a long second, then looked at Scarlett. "She's insane."Scarlett said nothing. She walked away toward the front door without looking back.Riley appeared from the kitchen carrying torn strips of cloth in both hands. She crouched beside Kyle without meeting his eyes and started wrapping the strips around his lower legs, pulling them tight over his calves."What are you doing?" Kyle looked down at her hands."Your legs are going to cramp within the first hour of walking through fog terrain," Riley muttered, tying a knot with sharp, aggressive fingers. "Your muscles are garbage. Worse than garbage. A wet towel has more structure than your calves.""So you're helping me.""I'm protecting an investment." Riley yanked a knot so tight Kyle winced. "If you collapse in the fog zone, I have to carry you, and I would rather carry a sack of dead fish. At least dead fish don't talk.""That's almost sweet, Riley. Should I add bonus points for this?""I don't want your points.
Chapter 10 Part 3
"Ten durability points per hour," Hailey said from the driver's seat, her voice quiet but steady. "That's the burn rate in category two fog. We have ten thousand each, so the math looks generous, but it's not. Higher density pockets burn faster. If we hit a category three zone by accident, it could jump to fifty per hour.""So watch the timer," Kyle said."Watch it like your life depends on it," Hailey confirmed. "Because it does."Kyle looked at his bracelet. 9,990 already. The fog was eating through it like acid through paper."Plus ten points to Hailey for the briefing," Kyle said, typing on the terminal. "And plus five to Scarlett for breaking Vivian's illusion earlier without being asked."Scarlett did not acknowledge the points. She sat beside him staring out the window at the yellow nothing with the same flat expression she wore for everything.Kyle's hand found the edge of Scarlett's sleeve and gripped it as the fog pressed tighter against the glass. Visibility had dropped to
Chapter 11 Part 1
The SUV tore through the fog at full speed, the engine screaming, the tires skidding on wet asphalt every time Hailey jerked the wheel to avoid wrecked cars and fallen poles.Kyle pressed his face against the back window and felt his stomach drop. The fog behind them was moving. Not drifting. Moving. Shapes upon shapes, hundreds of them, pouring out of the yellow haze like a flood of gray flesh and broken teeth."How many is that?" Kyle's voice came out higher than he wanted."Three hundred," Bianca answered from the front seat, her dark eyes locked on the side mirror. "Maybe more. They're multiplying.""Multiplying? They're dead! Dead things don't multiply!""Tell them that," Riley snapped from beside him, her pale eyes wide and fixed on the horde filling the road behind them.Hailey cut the wheel hard and the SUV lurched left into a narrow side street. An abandoned auto repair shop sat at the end of the block, five stories tall with a rusted metal door hanging halfway off its frame.
Chapter 11 Part 2
"You could always go down there yourself." Riley crouched near the edge of the roof, scanning the horde below with her pale eyes. "Wave your arms around. Maybe they'll laugh themselves to death.""Very helpful, Riley. Truly. You're a beacon of support.""I'm a beacon of keeping you alive despite every cell in my body screaming not to." Riley glanced back at him with a cold smile. "You're welcome."Bianca pulled the last tie free. The black cloth fell away and revealed a blade so large it looked like it belonged in a myth, not a woman's hands. Seven feet of dark steel, wide as a man's thigh, the edge gleaming even in the gray fog light.Kyle stared at it. "You've been carrying that this whole time?""Under the back seat." Bianca stood and lifted the blade with one hand, resting it across her shoulder like it weighed nothing. Her dark eyes swept over the horde below with the calm focus of a predator counting its meal. She picked up the empty scabbard, held it over the edge, and kicked it
Chapter 11 Part 3
Riley stood beside him with one hand raised, blue healing light glowing from her palm, ready to patch anyone who took a hit. She noticed him gripping the railing and watching."Don't throw up on my shoes," Riley said without looking at him. "These are the only pair I have.""I'm not going to throw up.""Your face is green.""My face is fine.""Your face looks like something I'd find under a wet rock." Riley's lip curled. "But at least you're not hiding. That's new for you."Fifteen minutes. That was all it took. Bianca on the ground carving through the horde like a machine. Hailey picking off leaders with shots that never missed. Vivian dissolving entire clusters into bone. Scarlett raining red feathers that killed on contact. When the last corpse hit the floor, the building went quiet. Kyle's ears rang in the silence. They climbed down through the withered vines and stepped into the ground floor. The scene was a graveyard of clean white bones and gray dust. Kyle walked through it slow
Chapter 12 Part 1
Kyle sat on the rooftop of the wrecked repair shop with three hundred sixteen star stones piled between his legs and five women standing over him like a jury that had not yet decided the sentence."We need to test it," Scarlett said, her golden eyes flat and fixed on the fog below. "One discovery is not a pattern. It could be the zone. It could be the density. It could be a system error.""Or it could be me," Kyle muttered. "The walking loot box.""We'll find out." Scarlett turned to Bianca. "Go into the fog. Kill ten corpses. Come back and report the drop."Bianca picked up her massive blade without a word and dropped off the roof. The fog swallowed her in two seconds. They waited in tense silence. Seven minutes later, she climbed back up the withered vines with gray dust on her jacket and nothing in her hands."Ten kills," Bianca reported, brushing bone fragments off her sleeve. "Zero drops. Not a single stone.""My turn." Riley vaulted over the edge before anyone could argue. She wa
Chapter 12 Part 2
Kyle scrambled to his feet and sprinted across the rooftop, arms pumping, legs burning, screaming the entire way. The crippled corpse dragged itself after him with a speed that a creature with two shattered legs should not have been capable of, its broken fingers scraping grooves into the concrete.Scarlett flicked her wrist. A gust of wind hit the corpse like a truck and blew it apart across the rooftop. Pieces scattered. Dust settled. And there, sitting in the center of the wreckage, glowing white and warm, was a freshly formed star stone.Kyle stood at the far end of the roof, bent over with his hands on his knees, gasping for air. He stared at the stone from twenty feet away and let out a laugh that sounded more like a sob."So it's me." He straightened up slowly, sweat dripping off his chin. "I'm the golden goose. Every dead thing in this fog wants to eat me, and when they die trying, they drop treasure. I must be the luckiest man alive."Nobody laughed. Not even a smile."Lucky i
Chapter 12 Part 3
Kyle watched her go with his lip still stuck out. Then he sighed and sat down on the concrete, hugging his knees to his chest. On the other side of the roof, near the withered vine ladder, a different kind of tension was building."She's getting soft on him." Riley's voice was low, but it carried across the open air. She stood with her arms crossed, her pale blue eyes aimed at Bianca. "And so are you."Bianca leaned against the railing with her blade resting across both shoulders, her dark eyes half closed. "Excuse me?""Don't play dumb." Riley stepped closer, her jaw tight. "You carried his gear into the SUV without being asked. You covered his flank during the fight downstairs. And just now, when that corpse was chasing him, you moved toward him before Scarlett even raised her hand.""I was being practical," Bianca said, her voice smooth and unbothered."You were being soft." Hailey spoke up from behind Riley, her quiet voice carrying a rare edge. "Like Scarlett. He's turning you."B
Chapter 13 Part 1
Kyle sat cross legged on the rooftop with a star stone in each hand, pressing them against his temples like a man trying to squeeze juice from a rock. The white glow pulsed through his fingers, traveled up his arms, and vanished somewhere deep inside his chest.Nothing happened. He grabbed two more. Pressed harder. Closed his eyes so tight his whole face scrunched. The energy absorbed instantly, swallowed whole, and his Mental Power reading on the terminal did not move a single fraction."Again," Kyle muttered, snatching another stone from the pile. "Come on. Come on."Fourteen stones. Twenty. Thirty. Every single one disappeared into him like water poured into an ocean, and his one star Mental Power sat on the screen like a number carved in granite, cold and permanent and mocking him.Kyle's hands started shaking. His jaw locked. Something hot and stinging climbed up the back of his throat and settled behind his eyes."It's not working." His voice cracked on the last word, and he thr
Chapter 13 Part 2
Then he dropped his hands and looked at the pile of remaining stones. Over two hundred of them, glowing white, scattered across the rooftop like fallen stars."Give them out," Kyle said.Riley's head snapped toward him. "What?""Forty percent. Split it between the five of you." Kyle grabbed a handful and held them toward Bianca. "They don't work on my Mental Power anyway, and we're pushing deeper into west side fog tomorrow. I need all of you stronger, not me sitting here crying over rocks that my brain refuses to eat."Bianca stared at the stones in his outstretched hand. Her dark eyes moved from the stones to his face and back again, like she was checking for a trap."Just take them before I change my mind," Kyle snapped. "What, you want me to beg? I'm handing you free power. Grab it or I'll feed them to the fog."Bianca took the stones. Her fingers closed around them without a word, but something shifted in her dark eyes, a brief, unguarded flash of surprise that she buried before
