They walked for another hour before slowing. Lin Hao kept to the darkest lanes, circling back twice to make sure no shadow stayed behind them. The streets grew quieter, the houses farther apart, until they reached the edge of open fields.Hale was waiting at the agreed spot, standing beside a small parked car. He opened the doors quickly when he saw them."Get in," he said quietly. "We don't want the engine noise carrying."Lin Hao helped Xiao Man into the back, then sat beside her. His mother took the front seat. Hale pulled smoothly away, turning onto a narrow road that ran between hedges and trees."No one followed," Hale said. "I watched the road for two hours. Clear all the way.""For now," Lin Hao said. "They will find the men I left unconscious. They will know we are gone. And they will start searching every road leading out of the city."Hale nodded. "We change vehicles at the next village. Less chance of being recognized."Xiao Man leaned her head against the window, watching

The first man lunged forward, arm extended to grab. Lin Hao shifted sideways, catching the man’s wrist and turning the momentum. He sent him stumbling past into the second man behind him. They collided, grunting, and struggled to right themselves. Two more came at once from either side. Lin Hao ducked low, sweeping a leg to knock one off balance. He straightened fast, raising his forearm to block the other’s blow. The impact jarred his arm all the way to the shoulder. He stepped back, breathing hard. They were pressing in fast, not giving him space to gather strength. The older man stood at the entrance, watching calmly, giving no order to stop."Surround him," the man called out. "He cannot face all of you at once."They spread out, moving in a loose half circle. Lin Hao kept his eyes moving, watching every shift, every step. He raised the serpent figurine and channeled a pulse of energy outward. The red light flared bright, blinding for a moment. Two men flinched, shielding their ey

They walked down the mountain without speaking at first. The path wound through trees that grew thick and quiet, the light fading fast between the branches. Lin Hao kept his pace steady, watching every shadow, every turn in the track. The disciple walked beside him, his steps light but heavy with thought. He still held the serpent figurine in his hand, his fingers curled loosely around it."Your family," he said after a while. "They know nothing of this world, do they?""They know fear," Lin Hao said. "They know danger. But they do not know the full truth. Not yet.""And you will tell them?""When the time is right," Lin Hao said. "When it will not only frighten them. But help them understand why we fight."They reached the shepherd’s hut an hour later. Hale stood outside watching the approach, his posture tense. He relaxed only slightly when he saw who walked beside Lin Hao.The door opened before they reached it. Xiao Man stood in the doorway, her eyes wide. She looked from Lin Hao

The figure stepped fully into the light. He was tall, cloaked in shadows that seemed to cling to him like fabric. His face was half hidden, but his eyes burned with a cold, steady violet flame."You have come far," he said. His voice did not echo. It seemed to rise from the stone itself. "And you have learned so little."Lin Hao stepped forward, placing himself between the figure and the others. "Who are you?"The figure laughed softly. "I am the one who saw the truth long ago. I am the one who understood that the power was never meant to be locked away. It was meant to be used.""You speak of the hunger," the disciple said. "The thing that consumes everything it touches. You call that power?""I call it freedom," the figure said. "Freedom from limits. Freedom from fear. Freedom from the chains that bind us all to small lives and weaker rules."He took a slow step closer. "You were once the greatest among us," he said to Lin Hao. "You held more power than any other. And you gave it up

Morning broke clear and bright over the valley. Lin Hao was up before the sun, standing on the slope behind the cottage. He watched the light spill across the hills, gilding the treetops and touching the distant roofs of the city.He felt a presence beside him and turned. The disciple stood there, wrapped in a plain cloak, his face calm in the early light."You rise early," the disciple said."Old habit," Lin Hao said. "In the mountains where I was raised, we woke before dawn to tend the fields. It feels wrong to sleep through the best part of the day."The disciple nodded slowly. "I remember you saying that once. Centuries ago. I thought it was just another lesson."Lin Hao looked at him. "It was not a lesson. It was a way of seeing. The world is fresh each morning. We do not have to carry yesterday’s weight into it."They stood in silence for a while. The wind moved softly through the grass. Somewhere below, a stream ran clear over stones."I have been thinking," the disciple said.
