The three slabs stood on the drill ground before the first bell had finished ringing.Brynhild had cast them in the dark hours, from the same mix as the first one, and the coat on each was still damp. The gate to the Ashen Vault stood at the south wall of the Quarter, a tall arch of black stone with grey light behind it.Riven reached it at first bell with Brynhild at his side and six Veterans behind them. Hale had picked the six himself. They carried lamps, rope, and a hand pump on a pole, because Brynhild had asked for the pump and would not say why."You do not need an escort," she said.
