Two hours and forty-five minutes after leaving the Blackwood estate, Adrian was still crossing the southern district of Ironhaven. The capital was enormous. It stretched so far that someone seeing it for the first time could easily mistake it for its own nation. Slate rooftops filled most of the view, broken by the Empress's tall spires and the gated compounds belonging to the Archduke bloodlines. The summer heat was getting worse.Across from Adrian, Thalia tugged at the high collar of her maid uniform and fanned herself with one hand. Her face was already flushed."I forgot how much I hated this," she muttered. "Being warm-blooded is completely overrated.""You'll get used to it.""I had four hundred years without a pulse. Forgive me if it takes more than a week to start appreciating sweat."Adrian kept his eyes on the map spread across his knees."Your memories were stored in an underground tomb. You should be more familiar with cold, dark places."Thalia stopped fanning herself an

"Adrian?"Thalia was watching him.Adrian kept his left hand close to his side and tried to ignore the heat burning through it. The leather glove reached all the way to his elbow, hiding the golden glow of the Holy Mark from view."I'm fine.""You don't look fine.""I'm fine, Thalia."She kept watching him for another second before finally looking away.Adrian focused on the problem instead. He hadn't used Necromancy since arriving in Pandora's Rainforest. The Holy Mark shouldn't have reacted. It had always responded to his Necromancy before, and he hadn't used any of the other branches of Dark Arts either. So what had triggered it?The heat disappeared as suddenly as it had come.Adrian glanced down at his covered hand.Nothing.He didn't like that.In his first life, strange things had rarely happened without a reason. On a battlefield, a sudden silence could mean someone was waiting to attack. A missing patrol could mean an ambush. Even a small change in magical pressure could mean

The green light disappeared.Adrian opened his eyes. For a moment, he didn't move.He stood in a massive underground chamber surrounded by darkness, with the faint green glow from the teleportation formation fading behind him. This wasn't what he had expected. The Hollow Labyrinth was supposed to be dangerous, but Adrian had expected some kind of ancient structure, perhaps a sealed corridor or a large underground hall filled with magical formations.Instead, he was standing in a place that looked like a graveyard.Bones covered the ground. There were thousands of them. Some were small enough to belong to humans or smaller creatures, while others were far too large. Most had turned yellow or dark brown with age, their surfaces dry and cracked after spending centuries underground.Adrian slowly looked around. He didn't find the sight disturbing. If anything, he found it strangely familiar."This is more like it."He took a step forward. His boot crushed several small bones beneath it.T

Adrian walked for fifteen kilometers before the passage finally ended at another entrance. After the dragon skull gateway at the beginning, he had expected something just as dramatic this time. Instead it was a plain wooden door with a doorknob, so old and worn out that one kick would have knocked it off its hinges. He felt disappointed, and he almost kicked it anyway. But he stopped himself, because careless actions were exactly what got people killed inside Sera's Labyrinth. A door this simple made him suspicious, since nothing else in this place had been simple so far. There weren't any skeletons along this last stretch either. That meant none of the people who had died in the earlier chambers had ever made it this far. Adrian understood that, but it still bothered him, because the walk had felt like a casual stroll for him. Even the three green eyed guardians hadn't given him much trouble. If the path was this easy, why had hundreds of people died on it? Or maybe the Labyrinth was

Adrian kept his hand on the blade and didn't move. Someone had been standing in this room the whole time, and he hadn't sensed anything at all. He had survived ten years of war because he trusted his instincts, and right now his instincts were telling him the room was empty. That made him feel alarmed, even though he kept his face calm, because it meant this person could have attacked him anytime and he wouldn't have known. How did someone get this close without leaving even a little bit of mana behind? And why was it talking to him instead of killing him?"I think you have the wrong person," he said."I have been waiting for you, Lady Sera."It was the exact same sentence as before. The voice sounded like a young girl's, but it never went up or down, and there was no breathing between the words. It felt like someone reading a line they had learned a long time ago. Adrian didn't like it, and he didn't understand why it bothered him this much anyway. Two red eyes opened in the darkness

Adrian walked a few steps behind Sister while she went barefoot through the forest. She kept turning her head left and right every few seconds, and the white halo above her floated along with every movement. He didn't understand why a machine would look so curious about some bushes and trees. Maybe Sera built her to act like this, or maybe she picked it up during all the years she spent alone in the dark. Either way he still felt like it was still strange, and he couldn't stop watching her.He kept looking at the halo anyway. The Holy Mark and the halo both ran on Holy Mana, and they reacted to the Archon Blade at the same time, so he was almost sure they came from the same source. That meant everything Sera made had the same foundation, even though one was a mark on someone's arm and the other was a girl who walked and talked. Adrian still felt like he was missing the biggest part of it. Who was this woman that could make both of them, and why did nobody write her name down in three

Thirteen days before the army was supposed to enter the domain of the Demon Lord of Envy, Adrian found Jenna sitting alone at the edge of the cliff behind the camp. She was on one of the wooden containers the supply team had stacked there, and she was looking up at the sky. There were no stars that night because the smog covered all of it, purple and black from one side to the other. He stopped a few steps behind her and waited for her to say something. She didn't say anything, and she didn't even turn her head, even though she must have felt his mana from far away. Adrian felt irritated right away. He had been looking for her for almost an hour, and this time around she didn't even pretend to notice him. Did she really think he wouldn't find her out here?"Jenna."She didn't answer."I know you can hear me.""I can hear you," she said, still looking at the sky. "I just don't want to talk right now.""Too bad. I do."She didn't reply to that, so he walked closer, and that was when he

Nathan didn't move. His hand was still on his sword, but he didn't draw it, because he knew it wouldn't help him right now. He had been a Cardinal for many years, and he had never seen anyone kill twenty one men that fast without him noticing until it was over. Even the Saint's own guards couldn't do that. What kind of person can do that, and how is she standing there so calmly with her hands folded in front of her?The dead men started to get up. They stood one after another with the rotten bone still sticking out of their throats, and then a bear and a few wolves walked out from the trees with their eyes completely black. Nathan studied all of them carefully. They didn't wander around like normal undead, they stood in a straight line and waited for her to give an order. Controlling this many at the same quality was something very few necromancers could do, and most of the ones he knew about were Grade 7 at most. She was higher than that, even though she looked like an ordinary maid.

Nathan pushed out the little mana he had left and let his Holy Magic flare around his body. It was the only thing he could think of right now. Most people backed away when a Cardinal did this, and even dark mages usually hesitated, so he only needed her to hesitate for one moment. One moment was enough for him to reach his potions.Thalia giggled softly and covered her mouth with her hand."Please stop, my lord. It won't work on me.""It works on everyone. I've made grown dark mages run away with this.""I'm sure you did. But my Great Master didn't give my fear back when he resurrected me, so I don't have any to give you.""What do you mean he didn't give it back?""I mean it never came back, my lord. I haven't been afraid of anything since I woke up. I'm sorry if you were hoping for that."Nathan stared at her. He knew necromancers could raise corpses, but a raised corpse didn't talk like this, and it didn't remember manners or call someone Great Master. Whoever did this to her wasn'

Nathan stayed on his knees in the dirt and looked at the boy for a long time. He had heard a lot of strange requests since he became a Cardinal, but nobody had ever asked him to teach Holy Magic to a Dark Mage, and the boy had asked it so plainly. Nathan still felt like he heard it wrong, even though he knew he hadn't. A dark mage who tried to bring out Holy Mana would burn his own body from the inside, and Nathan had already watched two people die from it. So why was this boy so calm about it, and what does he know that nobody else knows?"Let me make sure I understand," Nathan said slowly. "You want me to teach you Holy Magic.""Yes.""Me. A Cardinal of the Holy Order.""That's what I said. I don't see what's confusing about it."Nathan looked at the boy's face and couldn't find any sign that he was joking. He looked serious and a little bored, which made Nathan feel even more confused. Most people who asked a Cardinal for something were either nervous or greedy, and this boy was ne
