Adrian had been thinking about it all the way down the stairs. A full lie wouldn't work, because his father saw the gold light with his own eyes, and the whole truth would take hours and sound like madness. So he chose the middle, the part that was real enough to say out loud."I can't tell you yet.""Cannot, or will not?""Cannot, for now. I don't understand all of it myself." Adrian sat straight so the bandage wouldn't pull. "But I know demons are moving against the empire. Ravenshaw was only one piece of it. I've been preparing since before my birthday, and the Mark is part of what I need. That's all I can say.""Preparing.""Yes.""Since before the party." Gideon looked at him for a long time. "The east wing. The horses. The experiment in the west tower. Were those preparing as well?""Those were just experiments.""I was afraid you would say that." Something almost like humor crossed his face and left again very quickly. He turned to the window. "The sword in the hall. I had it p

Adrian pushed himself up on one elbow, and his ribs pulled until he had to stop and wait. Thalia kept the sparrow on her glove. It was still making thin sounds, but he could tell it had already said everything it knew."Is he inside the academy or still outside the walls?""The bird cannot say, Great Master. It lost a wing in the night, so it only followed him as far as the gate.""And the other two?""They did not come back." Thalia stroked the sparrow's head once with her thumb. "I think the demon noticed them. This one lived because it flew low."Adrian lay back down and looked at the roof of the carriage. He always knew Lucas would end up at Ashgate, because in his first life the boy showed up there with a contract demon, so the place was not a surprise. The speed was the surprise. He expected months, and Lucas got there in a few days with a Retainer that Adrian still couldn't remember properly. He was annoyed at himself, because he kept saying that this time around he would be re

The Paladin looked at her, then at Adrian, then at the line of carriages behind them that had grown out of the gate and halfway down the road. He clearly didn't believe any of it. He waved them through anyway, because the line was too long to argue with. The yard inside was muddy from rain the night before. A small crowd of early students was gathered there, and Adrian saw Roland Vane in the middle of them before he saw anything else. Roland was talking loudly to a group of Dark Empire students and to a tall boy in white and gold with pale hair, who leaned against the wall with a smile that said he was enjoying himself. Roland kept calling him Lord Ashcroft, and he kept mentioning that the Emperor himself enrolled him early. Valen Ashcroft, Holy Empire heir, Grade 5. Adrian heard the name before but couldn't remember where."And then the stone almost went out!" Roland said, and his friends laughed before he reached the end. "In front of the Inquisitors! The Genius of the Dark Empire,

Adrian looked for Lucas Hale for six days and never saw him once. The ledger gave him a name and a date and nothing else, and he couldn't ask anybody about a transfer student with no house without making someone curious. So he kept to the plan he and Maya agreed on and learned the campus. He learned the paths between the Dark spires and the neutral buildings, and he learned which Paladins at the gate were lazy. It still bothered him every night that the boy was somewhere inside these walls, and he didn't even know which window was belonging to him.On the last night of the early week the academy held its opening ceremony in the Proving Hall. It was a stone amphitheater built for a thousand, with a wide sand floor and a stage on one side, and behind the stage stood the Ranking Wall, where every first year's reading would be posted in glowing script. About six hundred people were there, since the older students hadn't come back yet, and the first years sat in the front rows. Attendants

He stood up so fast that the bench scraped across the floor and a few students turned to look. He didn't care. Maya never went anywhere without those gloves, and she had been careful with them since the party. If she had taken them off herself, she would have put them in her pocket. Somebody folded them and left them on the pillow, and that somebody wanted him or Lilly to find them. He knew exactly who had been looking for her. The Retainer said it in the hallway, and Lucas had been inside these walls for ten days. Then Adrian spent six of them walking the paths and watching lazy Paladins. He was supposed to be watching Maya. He promised his father to protect Lilly, and he told himself that Maya was safe next to her, and he never once thought about what they would do with a girl alone in her room."Did the rats find anything?" he asked."Nothing, Great Master. The window is on the third floor and there is no mark on the wall." Thalia kept her hands folded, but her voice was lower tha

Then he heard another set of footsteps, behind them, in time with their own. When he stopped, they stopped a moment later. Lilly noticed it at the same time and grabbed his sleeve."Adrian, is somebody following us?""Don't turn around.""I'm not going to turn around. I'm going to scream if you tell me to.""Don't scream either."Thalia had already stopped. She put the lantern on the floor and let her bone blades slide out of her fingers, one at a time, without a sound. Sister's halo flickered once and held. Why are the steps behind them and not in front? And did they follow from the shaft, or have they been in these walls the whole time, waiting for somebody to pass? The wall on the left side began to move. A shape came out of the stone, slowly, as if the rock was giving it up. Then there was another one on the right. Adrian understood what they were before the faces finished forming. Envy's Echoes took the shape of whoever you were afraid to lose, and the hallway filled with them in

"Eleven years." The voice came out of Maya's mouth, but a second voice sat under it and said every word a little after she did. "The Seal waited eleven years for a vessel strong enough. Now it has one."Adrian never saw her move. A moment before, the black chains were holding her up in the middle of the chamber, and then they were broken on the floor and her hand was around his throat. He had his sword halfway up and he never got it any higher. She lifted him off his feet with one arm and her green eyes did not blink once. She was stronger than a sixteen year old ought to be, much more than she looked, and he knew the strength was coming from the Seal."Maya," he tried to say, and only a thin sound came out.He did not want to hurt her, and that was the whole problem. The Retainer was still standing behind Lucas with its claws in his back, smiling with all its teeth, and it clearly knew he would never strike first. Adrian pushed his mind toward Dissever. Whatever moved her had to be t

"A gold glove," Adrian said. "Which hand?""The right." Lucas's eyes were half closed and his words came out slowly. "I saw him only once, from the stairs. He had his hood up, but his hand was on the rail. My father sent me to my room after that.""Did you hear a name?""No. Just that he spoke for the Emperor."Adrian waited for more and nothing came. Lucas's head dropped sideways onto the stone and his breathing went shallow and even. He was breathing, and nothing was left in him to stay awake with, because the Retainer had been using him as fuel. Adrian stayed on one knee a while longer looking at the boy's cracked lips. A Cardinal in white robes with a gold glove on his right hand had come to the Ravenshaw house three years ago and brought a Demon Lord with him. Who is that man, and why would he want a Demon Lord loose in the Dark Empire's capital? Did the Emperor really send him, or did somebody just borrow the Emperor's name? He had so many questions that he did not know which on

Maya nodded once and put her gloves on. She looked at them for a moment, then took them off again and left them on the bed.Lucas stayed in the cellar, he did not talk much and he ate less. Sister had volunteered to guard him because she never needed sleep, and she sat on a stool near the stairs every night with her hands folded and reported to Adrian each morning in her flat voice. The boy asked for water twice and for nothing else. Adrian went down on the second night to ask about the glove again, and Lucas gave him the same answer in the same order, the right hand and the hood. Adrian could not decide if that made it true or just practiced, and he came back up the stairs with no better idea than before.Sister also checked his reserves that night, before she went down. She put both small hands on his left arm and kept them there a long time. The Dark Mana had not shrunk, she said, and the Holy Mana had not grown either. They sat next to each other quietly, and between them was some

Why would she ask him that? Did she feel something when she walked past, or was it only the glove on his arm that caught her eye? And why did it have to be her, out of everybody in that whole courtyard, who asked? The Mark was burning under the bandage, and it got worse the longer she stood there. Jenna was waiting for an answer, and she did not look like a girl who liked waiting. Adrian knew he had to say something before the silence turned strange."No," he answered. "I don't think we have."She studied his face for another second. Her hand was still on her collarbone, on the bare skin, and she seemed to notice it only then and let it drop. "My mistake," she said. Then she nodded once and walked on toward the registrar's table. Her Paladin escort closed in behind her, and the crowd filled in the gap she left. Adrian did not move. He had been preparing speeches for her since the day he woke up in his old bed, and he had a lot of them. Every one was gone from his head now. The only th
