CHAPTER 21
She closed her eyes. A shimmer passed over the top of her head like heat rising off pavement, and two soft pointed fox ears appeared, silver furred with white tips, standing upright in her hair.Behind her, nine tails unfurled from where they had been compressed flat against her body, fanning out in a cascade of silver and white gold fur that caught every bit of light in the room.Maxver stared at them. Then at the ears. Then back at the tails."Can I touch them?""You want to touch my ears?" Her cheeks turned pink."More than I've wanted anything in this world so far."Autumn looked at him for a long moment. Then she bent down, wrapped her arms around his waist, and lifted him straight off the ground. His feet left the floor entirely and his face came level with her fox ears, close enough to reach without stretching."What are you doing?" Maxver's voice cracked."You're shorter than me. This is more comfortable for both of us." Her voice was perfectly calm, as if picking up a grown m
CHAPTER 22
Maxver settled into the passenger seat of Autumn's flying car and let out a long breath as the vehicle lifted off the Purification Center's rooftop pad. The image of Wyatt Jansen being carried through the lobby like a man returning from war was still fresh in his mind."System, I want to say something I don't say often."[The system is listening.]"Thank you. For showing me the difference between what I have and what Jansen goes through. I didn't realize how easy I have it until I watched that man get hauled out on someone's back after twelve hours of work for ten percent. I'm lucky."[The system appreciates host's gratitude. The system also advises host not to take this good fortune for granted. Many men in this world would trade everything they own for the advantages host currently enjoys and dismisses on a daily basis.]Maxver opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again."And just like that I want to take the thank you back."[The system has nothing further to add at this time.]M
CHAPTER 23
She reached over without looking and pinched his cheek lightly between two fingers, the way someone might handle something small and precious and slightly silly."Protecting you is both my duty and my honor." She said it like she was stating a medical fact. "You don't need to thank me for it."Maxver's heart kicked once, hard and unexpected, like a drum being struck in an empty room. He cleared his throat immediately."So what's for dinner tonight? I'm starving."[The system notes that host's heart rate spiked to 102 beats per minute for approximately four seconds. The system finds this adorable.]"Shut up," Maxver whispered under his breath. The flying car descended toward Silver Oak Estate and touched down in the underground garage. They took the elevator up to the main floor, and the moment the doors opened, the villa's internal speakers chimed."Sir, Beast Wife Sienna Blake has arrived. She is currently waiting at the front entrance."Maxver looked at Autumn. Autumn looked at Maxv
CHAPTER 24
Maxver looked at the twenty cores glowing inside their velvet boxes, beast cores on the left and insect cores on the right, and felt his resolve bending like a branch in a windstorm. His mouth was saying no but his brain was doing math, and the math was winning.[The system provides a helpful summary. These cores can directly upgrade host's Wood Element ability by multiple tiers. The woman who brought them is tall, striking, comes from extreme wealth, and hunted every single one of these personally, which means she is also powerful enough to kill creatures that most soldiers run from. Additionally, once host formally bonds with her as a Beast Wife, her assets legally transfer to his name under federal matching law.]"You really don't want me to say no, do you?"[The system merely presents facts. Decisions belong to the host. But the system would like to note that refusing a gift of this magnitude from a woman who clearly wants to be accepted is not nobility. It is stupidity wearing a

Thirty seconds of silence. Then her reply came through, and even through text, he could feel the emotion behind it.[I'm fine. A few scratches but nothing serious. Master Cole, you asked if I was safe. You asked about me first. You didn't yell at me for being late. I don't know why but I think I might cry right now.]"Don't cry. Just get home in one piece. When are you heading back?"[A few days. I need to wrap up the mission and catch transport to the Central Star. I'll let you know the moment I have a date.]"Do that. And Riley, stop calling me Master Cole in texts. Just Maxver is fine."[Okay. Maxver. That feels weird but I like it. Talk soon.]He closed the chat with a small smile and drifted off on the sofa. The sounds of cooking wrapped around him like a warm blanket and pulled him under within minutes."Sir, dinner is ready." The butler robot's voice pulled him out of sleep at exactly six o'clock.Maxver walked into the dining room and stopped in the doorway. The table had been
CHAPTER 26
Sienna climbed the stairs with purpose and turned right toward the bedroom closest to Maxver's master suite. Her spatial storage was already open, clothes folded and ready to be arranged. If she was going to compete for position in this household, proximity was the first advantage she intended to secure. She pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room was empty, clean, and available. She set her bag on the bed and turned to look across the hallway. The door on the left side of Maxver's room was already closed. Through the crack at the bottom, warm light spilled out. A faint scent of jasmine drifted from underneath, and a pair of elegant shoes sat neatly beside the doorframe.Autumn had already taken the other room. The closer one. The one that shared a wall with Maxver's bedroom.Sienna stood very still for three seconds. Then she walked to the window and looked down at the garden path below. In the fading evening light, she watched Autumn step out through the front door with Ma
CHAPTER 27
Sienna stood in the empty room for a moment, her red orange eyes blinking once. Then she sat down on the sofa near his bed, opened his wardrobe, and selected a set of pajamas. She folded them neatly and set them on the cushion beside her, smoothing the fabric with her palms until every crease was gone. When Maxver came out fifteen minutes later with a towel around his shoulders and steam still rising from his skin, Sienna was waiting with the pajamas held out in both hands. He took them, changed behind the closet partition, and came back out expecting her to say goodnight.Instead she picked up a dry towel and stepped behind him. Her fingers worked through his damp hair, pressing the moisture out gently, then she produced a comb and began running it through from root to tip with slow, measured strokes.Maxver stood there, not sure whether he should stop her or admit that it felt extremely nice. He chose silence. When she finished, she set the comb down and stepped around to face him.

"Master Cole." Autumn's voice was strained in a way he had never heard before. "The tail is the most sensitive part of a fox's body.""Is that a problem?""It is not a complaint." Her eyes were half closed. "It is a warning that I may not be able to maintain my composure if you continue at this intensity."He continued at exactly that intensity. For a long, very happy stretch of time, he pinched, stroked, squeezed, and petted every inch of fur she had. Autumn endured it with the quiet suffering of a woman who was being touched in all the right places by a man who had absolutely no idea what he was doing to her.[The system suggests host ask Autumn to shift into full beast form. A nine tailed fox in beast form is approximately the size of a large house cat and possesses fur density three times higher than partial form.]Maxver's eyes went wide. "Autumn, can you shift into your full beast form?""Right now?""Right now."She stepped back, closed her eyes, and transformed. Her body shran
CHAPTER 29
Maxver sat perfectly still with Autumn's weight settled in his lap and his palms pressed flat against her chest, wondering at what exact point a purification session had turned into whatever this was. His face carried the kind of genuine confusion that only a man with absolutely no ulterior motive could produce."Autumn, if this position is uncomfortable, I can lie down and you can sit on top. That might be easier for the purification."Autumn's golden eyes went wide. A vivid image formed in her mind of exactly what that arrangement would look like and exactly how far it would push her self control. Color flooded her cheeks so fast it reached the tips of her fox ears."This position is fine." Her voice came out a full octave higher than normal. "This position is perfectly acceptable. Please do not change it.""Alright." Maxver shifted slightly to settle his weight and looked at her with an openness that made her want to scream. "But before I start, I want you to know something. If we
CHAPTER 30
Autumn held his gaze for exactly two seconds, a faint smile playing at the corners of her mouth, before she shifted. Her body shrank and reshaped, silver fur erupting across her frame, and within moments a small fluffy nine tailed fox sat in his lap, looking up at him with those same golden eyes that now seemed thoroughly amused behind tiny spectacle shaped markings in the fur around her face.Maxver exhaled with relief and placed both hands on her small furry body. Much safer. Much less complicated. He released his Mental Power again. Soft green light spread over the little fox like scattered stars, sinking into her silver fur and dissolving the remaining contamination threads one by one.The light played across her nine tails and made them glow faintly, each one shimmering like moonlight on water.[Purification complete. Mental Power consumed: 15%. Autumn Reyes contamination reduced from 88% to 30%. The system notes that purifying five star beastkin requires significantly more energ
