Chapter 021
The moment Luke Crowe returned to the Domain, he brought Bel straight to his thatched hut. The structure was humble, walls patched with dried mud and straw, but it served its purpose. Inside, the air smelled faintly of earth and smoke from the small cooking fire that had long since gone cold.Luke rummaged through a corner of the room and produced a piece of bark, its surface rough but flat enough to write on. He crouched by the low table, scratching out lines and characters with a charcoal stick, his movements deliberate and practiced. Bel stood near the doorway, arms crossed, watching with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. The dwarf's thick brows furrowed as Luke worked, the silence stretching between them like a taut rope. After a few minutes, Luke straightened and held out the bark. "Here."Bel stared at him, utterly baffled. He reached out slowly and took the makeshift document, turning it over in his calloused hands as if it might bite him. "What is this?"

Chapter 022
Ever since Bel arrived at Ashenvale, Luke Crowe had redirected most of his labor force into the mining operation.A few days later, the first wagonload of ore finally emerged from the Domain's mine.Luke immediately grabbed samples and prepared to visit his neighbor, Baron Whitcomb. He brought no one else except Garrick.Garrick led the way throughout the journey."My Lord," Garrick said as they crested a hill. "This is Baron Whitcomb's Domain."After a morning's travel, they'd finally reached Alan's territory. Before them stretched lush green farmland. A few unfamiliar faces worked the fields, and when they noticed the strangers approaching, their eyes filled with suspicion and wariness.Alan's Domain had no city walls either, only a circular wooden palisade. Inside, several dozen wooden houses stood scattered about. The settlement looked considerably better maintained than Luke's own holdings.Luke stopped before the palisade entrance.<

"What do you mean?"Luke Crowe asked, his voice edged with shock. He set down his tea, his mind already racing through the implications."Your neighbor to the east is Victor Ashgrave," Alan Whitcomb said, leaning forward. "His men have been asking how many soldiers and workers you have, where your mine is, how rich the ore vein is, and how much it produces each day. A merchant friend recently saw them inventorying weapons at Victor's Domain, preparing for something."Luke's jaw tightened. "He's planning to move on me?""I can't say for certain," Alan replied, his expression grave. "But I'd advise you to prepare. Soon."Silence stretched between them. Luke stared into his tea, thoughts churning like a storm behind his calm exterior. Finally, he looked up."What kind of man is he?"Alan let out a long sigh, as if the question itself was exhausting. "Domineering and ruthless, the kind who looks down on small Lords like you as if you were insects benea
Chapter 024
Luke Crowe pushed the door open. The first thing he saw was Alan Whitcomb seated at the head of the table.Beside him sat a middle-aged man dressed in expensive finery, his eyes fixed on the newcomer."Baron Crowe, you're here." Alan rose quickly, gesturing warmly. "Come, sit over here."The richly dressed man studied Luke with barely concealed amusement. His gaze swept over the plain homespun clothes, lingering on the sword at Luke's waist with its crudely woven vine scabbard. A sneer curled his lips. This was nothing more than a backwoods rustic, utterly beneath notice.Luke took in the man at a glance. Deep crimson silk robes. An outer coat embroidered with gold thread. At his waist, a ceremonial sword encrusted with gems that caught the lamplight. Three jeweled rings adorned his fingers, the centermost bearing an intricate engraving. If Luke wasn't mistaken, that would be a family crest."This is Baron Ashgrave," Alan said, making introductions. "This is
Chapter 025
"I'm listening."Baron Whitcomb led Luke Crowe into his study.Once inside, Luke spoke without preamble. "You deal with merchant caravans regularly, so you must be familiar with the concept of loans.""Of course." Alan Whitcomb raised his wine glass, his tone measured. "What are you proposing?""I need to borrow money," Luke said bluntly. He reached for the Baron's pen and paper, drafted a contract on the spot, and slid it across the desk. "Here's my plan. Take a look."[Loan Amount: One hundred gold coins' worth of supplies.Purpose: To forge weapons, fortify defenses, train militia, and stockpile provisions.Collateral: Thirty percent revenue share from the ore vein.Repayment Method: Twelve monthly installments, paid in ore.Loan Term: One year.Interest: None. However, the Lord of Ashenvale pledges that upon repelling Victor Ashgrave, Baron Whitcomb shall receive exclusive purchasing rights to the ore vein at twenty percent
Chapter 026
Luke Crowe rose early the next morning, slipping out of bed before the sun had fully cleared the horizon. With Garrick and Hollis occupied drilling the Provisional Guard, Beanpole busy setting traps around the perimeter, and Nova and Sky absorbed in their studies of magical theory, Luke found himself alone for the journey ahead. He would have to seek out the Orcs on his own.The ride was long and jarring, and by the time he reached Grimjaw's encampment his back ached and his patience had worn thin.Luke dismounted and surveyed the camp from the outer edge. Everything looked exactly as it had on his last visit. The same rough fortifications, the same scattered tents. Nothing had changed, at least at first glance. The moment he approached, an Orc sentinel stepped into his path, blade drawn and leveled at Luke's chest."State your business." The Orc's voice was a low growl, suspicion dripping from every syllable."A human? You dare walk in here?""Hol
Chapter 027
Luke Crowe left early that morning, and soon after, Garrick and Hollis began rousing the soldiers of the Provisional Guard. The open training ground buzzed with energy. Every man assembled there looked ready to charge into battle at a moment's notice, their eyes burning with barely contained fire. Garrick limped forward to face them, his gaze sweeping across their sun-darkened faces. His hands trembled involuntarily, not from fear of any enemy, but from the weight of responsibility settling onto his shoulders. It had been far too long since he had last commanded troops. The fear gnawed at him, a quiet voice whispering that his rust might cost these men their lives, that one wrong decision could lead them all to their graves.Memories rose unbidden, fragments of past campaigns, past failures. Enough, he told himself, squeezing his eyes shut to force the ghosts away. What mattered now was training these men properly, nothing else. He drew a long breath, opened his eyes, and
Chapter 028
The next morning, Luke Crowe watched an endless convoy of wagons roll out from Alan Whitcomb's Domain toward his own territory. His jaw nearly hit the ground. He had been prepared, but seeing Alan mobilize so much in a single day still stunned him. What really caught his eye, though, was the massive furnace. It sat on an enormous flatbed wagon, lashed down with ropes and beams, and took at least six oxen just to haul. Moving something like that was close to logistical madness. And yet Alan had managed to deliver it in a single day.Luke's estimation of the man rose another notch. Alan Whitcomb might dress plainly and act unassuming, but he clearly had serious capability beneath that modest exterior."Everything you ordered is here," Alan said, gesturing toward the convoy with a faint smile. He was dressed in his usual understated clothing, the kind that made him look more like a prosperous farmer than a Lord. "And since you bought so much, consider thos
Chapter 029
The door swung open to reveal a massive orc standing on the threshold."Dreadiron?" Luke asked."It's been a while.""Yeah, it has," Luke said.Dreadiron ducked his head and stepped inside, his bulk filling the room."Grimjaw sent us to help you," he said in his characteristically sparse way.Luke Crowe frowned slightly. "Just you?""Not just me. There are fifty more of us, all in the woods outside.""Good," Luke said with a nod, unsurprised that the night patrols had missed Dreadiron's arrival. After all, Dreadiron's skill far exceeded anything Luke's men possessed."Tomorrow, hold back at first," Luke instructed. "Only step in if we're losing.""Understood," Dreadiron said, giving a silent nod before he turned and disappeared through the door. Luke had barely stepped outside to see him off when the orc vanished without a trace into the darkness.Luke exhaled slowly. "The insurance is in place."He slept soundly that night
Chapter 030
All Luke Crowe heard was a deafening roar. When awareness returned, he found himself cradled in Sky's arms. The skeleton's jawbone moved soundlessly, as if to say, "Don't worry. I've got you."Still dazed, Luke twisted around to look back.Where he'd been standing moments before, there was now a smoking crater, flames still licking at its edges.Victor Ashgrave bellowed, "Die!" and charged toward Luke once more, his sword raised high. Sweat plastered his hair to his forehead, and his eyes burned with manic fury.Nova reacted instantly. "Sky, get Lord Crowe out of here. Guard, fall back! Fog Veil!"In an instant, thick mist surged across the battlefield, swallowing trees, soldiers, and torn ground alike.Victor stopped mid-stride, head whipping around. Luke had vanished. Snarling, he swung his sword at the fog, slashing wildly at nothing. Then the explosions began, three colossal blasts in quick succession. Each one tore through the mist, the s
