Chapter 51 : What She Did Last Time
The man in the grey coat stayed on the steps with his hands in his pockets and did not come in."You took your time," he said."Who are you.""Nobody worth writing down." He looked past Evan, up the stairwell, toward the light on the first landing. "Is she up there.""Yes.""Good. I would rather say it once."Evan kept his hand on the door frame. "Say what."The man took his hands out of his pockets and turned them over, palms up. It was the gesture of someone showing you he is not carrying anything."That she does not have to be frightened of me," he said. "That is the first thing. I am not here to do it again."* * *Serena came down the stairs. She stopped four steps from the bottom, and Evan watched her look at the man the way you look at a page you have read once and did not understand. Then her face changed, and it did not change into fear."You," she said."Me.""You were at the gate. The night the Tower came down.""I was.""You had a knife.""I did." He said it without any we
Chapter 52 : The Rope He Is Still Holding
The man in the grey coat asked for water and then did not drink it."Ask," he said."What is the rope.""It is not rope." He set the glass down. "It is the feeling you get carrying something downstairs when you cannot put it down and there is nobody in the house. I have been carrying it downstairs for two hundred and eighty-one years."* * *"Where.""Everywhere I am." He held up his hand. "Here. In this room. It is always the weight of a thing that will fall if I open my fingers.""And what falls," Serena said."The door.""Falls where.""Out," the man said. "That is the whole answer and it is not satisfying. Out is where the thing on the other side has been waiting to go."* * *Evan leaned against the windowsill."You said the arrangement has held. Two hundred and eighty-one years.""It has.""So why are you in my stairwell.""Because three days ago it moved," the man said. "Not much. The width of a hair. I have held this thing long enough to know the difference between a strain an
Chapter 53: Forty Years
Nobody said anything for a while, and the room smelled the way the archive room always smelled at night — paper, cold radiator, and the metal tang of the old pipes.Yuna Park put the grey book on the table and did not open it."I want to say something before I do this," she said."Say it.""I have been keeper of this building forty years." She folded her hands on top of the book. "I have filed eleven thousand readings. I have watched four hundred and eleven names sit on a list and never move. And I have never once been asked to put my hand on anything."The man looked at her."You were asked," he said."Yes.""When.""Twenty-three."* * *Evan heard the number and then he understood it."You are on the list," he said."I have been on the list since the spring of my twenty-third year." Yuna Park did not look at him. "It is not a thing you put in a book, so it is not in a book. But I am on it. I have always known I am on it.""You never said.""To who." She turned her hands over and loo
Chapter 54: The Delivery
It came up the stairs at four minutes past midnight and it did not knock.Evan heard it first because he was standing closest to the door. Not footsteps exactly. A sound like a man in wet boots walking on stone, and then a pause on every landing, and then the sound again."That is four floors," Yuna Park said."I know.""There is nobody in this building but us.""I know."* * *The man in the grey coat stood up."Do not touch it," he said. "Whatever it is, do not put your hands on it until I have looked.""You said you would not do it again.""I said I would not put the knife in her." He moved past Evan and stood with his back to the door. "That is a smaller promise than you think it is."* * *The sound reached the third-floor landing and stopped. Then something sat down on the other side of the door.* * *"Who is there," Serena said.No answer."Who is there."The door did not move.Yuna Park picked up the grey book and held it against her chest, which Evan had never seen her do."
Chapter 55: The Inventory
The stairs went down further than the building did.Evan counted two flights he knew about and then four more, and the air changed, from cold radiator and paper to chalk and old glue."How far down does this go," he said."To the shelf.""That is not an answer.""It is the only answer I have." Yuna Park went first with the grey book under her arm. "I have been down here eleven times in forty years and I have never once asked what is under the shelf."* * *At the bottom there was a door with no handle on the outside, and Yuna Park pushed it open with her shoulder. The room behind it was long and low and lit by strip lights that came on in sequence, one bank at a time, walking away from them into the dark.Evan stopped in the doorway. What was in the room was shelves. Shelf after shelf, floor to ceiling, running the whole length of the room and back again, and on the shelves were volumes. Not files. Volumes. Matched, uniform, bound in grey board, each one about the size of a hand.* *
Chapter 56: The Part She Never Told Anyone
They left Yuna Park upstairs with the thing in the chair and the man in the grey coat standing in the corridor with his back to the wall, and they went down to the Archive kitchen because it was the only room in the building with a kettle. She stood at the sink with both hands on the rim and looked at the tap, and Evan sat on the table with his right hand in his lap and did not say anything, because he had learned in eleven days that she talked when she was ready and not before.* * *She came and sat on the table next to him, close but not touching."My hand fits the seal. I am the file that has been open for two hundred and eighty-one years. And I am on the shelf."She said it flatly."There is a volume down there with my name in it. I read it an hour ago while you were arguing with him about the stairs. I did not tell you."Evan did not move."What did it say.""A shopping list," she said. "Bread. Batteries. A note to a woman called Marie to say she could not come Thursday."* * *
Chapter 57: Take Me Instead
The corridor still smelled of wet fuse.Evan found the man in the grey coat sitting on the floor opposite four-oh-seven, where he had been standing four hours earlier. The door was shut. The thing in the chair had not made a sound since it sat down."Is she asleep," Evan said."Yuna? No. She is in the corridor on the other side of the building reading the register. She has been at it since we came up."* * *Evan sat down on the floor next to him, with his back against the same wall. His right hand was still grey to the second knuckle, and the cold had moved up his forearm."You are dying," the man in the grey coat said."I am not.""You are going grey from the fingers up. Do you want to know what that is."Evan looked at his hand."Tell me.""That is the fee," the man said. "You reached into the rope and the rope took a payment off you while you were in there. It will keep taking it as long as you keep reaching. That is not a wound, boy, that is a standing order."* * *"How long do
Chapter 58: Three Crossed Out
The back of the register was a page the same colour as the rest of it.Evan put it on the reading-room table under the lamp and the three of them stood around it."There is no heading," Serena said."There is no heading.""Every other page in this book has a heading."* * *There were four names in a column down the left side, and three of them had a line drawn through them. The lines were not the same. The first was drawn in ink with a ruler. The second was ink, by hand, and had gone slightly downhill. The third was pencil, lighter than the others, and had been drawn twice, as if the person had not been satisfied with the first pass."There are three hands here," the man in the grey coat said."Three different people crossed three names out.""Yes.""And the fourth one has no line through it.""No.""And it is mine."* * *Serena read the names out loud, top to bottom, because Evan had read them and had not wanted to say any of them. The first one had a date beside it. Two hundred an
Chapter 59: Yes
Evan carried the volume up the steps with both hands, which was how you carried something that had been left for you on purpose.Grey board. No spine mark. Warm.He set it on the hall desk and opened it.* * *There was one page.It was not a letter and it was not a record and it was not a list. It was a single word in the middle of the page, written in ink, in the neat small hand Evan had watched write eleven thousand archive slips in eleven days.YES.He read it eleven times. Then he shut the book and went to find the others.* * *He found Serena in the reading room with the register still open to the back page.He put the volume down in front of her and opened it and stepped back.Serena read it.She did not make a sound. She put her hand flat on the page, over the word, the way Yuna Park had put her hand on the cover, and then took it off again."When," she said."I do not know.""Tonight?""Probably."* * *The man in the grey coat came in from the corridor and stopped in the do
Chapter 60: E. Vale
It took both of them to get him up the stairs. The man in the grey coat held the rail with his left hand and Serena took his right and Evan walked behind with the green book, and by the time they reached the third floor all three of them had stopped talking. He sat down on the corridor floor with his back against the wall opposite four-oh-seven."How long," he said."Until you read what.""The cover." He had his eyes shut. "You are carrying the green book. I watched you pick it up in the shelf room.""It is the keeper's book," Evan said. "Yuna's.""It is nobody's book," the man in the grey coat said. "It is a cover. Somebody pressed a palm into it four hundred years ago and somebody else pressed a palm into it four hundred years later and it has never once belonged to either of them."* * *Serena opened it to the inside of the front cover. The palm was still there, gone the colour of weak tea, low and off-centre."Read it out," the man said."You have already seen it.""I have seen a
