Rook arrived through the silver lock. His body remained in the capital, but his spirit stepped into the city beneath the world wearing the old commander’s coat. The line around his throat glowed like a second mouth.“You were ordered to stay behind,” Kael said.“I am beginning to dislike orders.”Morrow tore Seris’s arrow from its chest. Black roots wrapped around Rook and dragged him toward the final gate.“The commander always returns to the lock,” Morrow said.Rook looked at Kael. “Do not let it use my command.”“We can cut the roots.”“You did that before.”“It worked.”“It made me a better lock.”Rook pulled his sword. The roots tightened around his body, but he used them as a path and climbed toward Morrow.Kael and Elia attacked from opposite sides. Elia’s silver light burned through the roots. Kael’s white relic cut the memories Morrow used as armor. The battle moved across the city. Morrow shattered towers and opened new doors. Each door showed a possible future in which some

The Crown broke above the world. Its pieces fell as white rain across the battlefields. Where a fragment landed, a gate sealed permanently. Where no fragment fell, the rift remained, changed but survivable.Kael returned to the northern fortress with Elia, Seris, Anja, and the small white form of Morrow. Rook did not return. His silver lock had become a ring of metal around the final gate. The ring held, but no voice answered when Kael spoke his name.Varro placed a hand on Kael’s shoulder. “He chose.”“He should have had another choice.”“We all should.”The alliance spent seven days finding survivors. The Ashborn guided refugees away from the remaining rifts. Jora rebuilt the northern line. Mara returned to Vey and dismantled the mirror towers. Nessa cataloged every Crown fragment and hid three from the new council.Seris stood beside Kael at the memorial wall.“You are forgetting things,” she said.“Some.”“Me?”“Not you.”“You forgot the first time I smiled.”“I remember that I wa

The new memorial was built on the roof of Saint Orra’s cathedral. The old roof had burned during the final battle, but the tower still stood. People from every surviving city traveled there to carve names into the white stone. Some names belonged to soldiers. Others belonged to monsters who had chosen not to serve Morrow. A few belonged to places destroyed so completely that no witness remained except a mark on an old map.Kael attended the dedication with Elia and Seris.Rook’s name was carved beneath the words: He chose the lock and opened the way.Kael had argued against the sentence. Rook had been a commander, a betrayer, and a man who waited too long to question his orders. He had also sacrificed himself when another sacrifice would have been easier to justify. The final wording belonged to Elia.“People are more than one sentence,” she said.Morrow stood before the memorial, reading every name slowly. It asked questions about families, battles, and the difference between a lie a

The star road led to a hill above a world that had never seen the Black Sun.Below them lay a city of white towers and blue rivers. People moved through its streets beneath the watch of enormous metal guardians. No monsters hunted the roads. No bells warned of rifts. It was beautiful enough to feel like a lie.At the hill’s summit stood seven figures in green glass armor.Lysa knelt before them.“The witness has arrived.”Kael stopped. “I am not your witness.”One of the figures lifted its helmet. Beneath the glass was a face like his father’s, though older than any living man.“You carry the memory of the broken agreement.”“Your guardian nearly erased my world.”“Because your world repeated the first betrayal.”Elia stepped beside Kael. “Then build a better agreement.”The makers looked at her.“The vessel speaks.”“I am not a vessel.”Morrow moved forward. “Neither am I a guardian.”The oldest maker studied the white child.“What are you?”Morrow considered the question.“I am lear
