Chapter 1
Chapter 1. The Day Humanity Fell
The smell of blood and burning steel filled the air.
The city that had once glittered with millions of lights was nothing more than a graveyard. Collapsed skyscrapers leaned against each other like dying giants. Military helicopters burned in the streets. Black smoke covered the sky, turning noon into midnight. A low growl echoed through the ruins. Then another. And another. Thousands of monsters slowly emerged from the darkness. Arjun Mehta tightened his grip around the cracked black sword in his hand. Blood dripped from his forehead. His left arm hung uselessly by his side. His armor had been torn apart long ago. Yet he refused to take a single step back. Behind him stood the last hope of humanity. A reinforced underground shelter. Inside were barely three hundred survivors—old people, women, and frightened children. The last humans left on Earth. A little girl peeked through the heavy steel door. "Brother Arjun..." Her trembling voice almost made him smile. He looked back for just a second. "It's okay." His voice was calm despite the destruction around him. "You'll live." The little girl shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "What about you?" Arjun didn't answer. Because both of them already knew the truth. There was no future for him. A deafening roar suddenly shook the battlefield. The ground cracked open. A creature nearly thirty meters tall climbed out of the earth. Its body looked like molten rock covered with black scales. Crimson eyes glowed like burning suns. Every monster around it immediately knelt. The Monster King had arrived. Arjun slowly exhaled. "So..." "It finally came." His exhausted body screamed in pain as he forced himself to stand straight. His status window appeared before his eyes. Name: Arjun Mehta Level: 147 HP: 2% Mana: 0% Stamina: 1% Skills Available: None Chance of Survival: 0% He laughed. A dry, helpless laugh. "So even the System has given up on me." The Monster King raised one gigantic claw. The sky itself seemed to tremble. Behind Arjun, the shelter door slowly began to close. Good. That meant the children would survive for at least a few more hours. Maybe someone... Somewhere... Would remember that humanity had fought until the very end. Arjun looked toward the burning horizon. He remembered his parents. His younger sister. His best friend Rohan. Every one of them had died during the first month of the apocalypse. If only... If only he had known. If only someone had warned humanity. The world wouldn't have ended like this. The Monster King roared again. An invisible pressure crushed the ground beneath Arjun's feet. His knees almost buckled. Almost. But he stood firm. "I've already lost everything." "What more can you take?" For the first time... The Monster King spoke. Its voice sounded like mountains collapsing. "Human." "You fought well." "But this planet no longer belongs to your kind." Arjun wiped the blood from his lips. He smiled. "Go to hell." The monster's massive fist came crashing down. At that exact moment— A golden light burst from Arjun's sword. Every remaining bit of energy inside his body exploded at once. He charged. Not to survive. But to kill. The collision lit up the entire city. A blinding explosion swallowed everything. Buildings disappeared. Monsters were vaporized. The shockwave traveled for miles. Silence followed. ... Darkness. No pain. No sound. Arjun slowly opened his eyes. A white ceiling. An old ceiling fan. The smell of instant noodles. His tiny rented apartment. He froze. "What..." He jumped out of bed. His hands. No scars. No broken arm. Young. Healthy. He rushed to the window. Outside, traffic moved normally. People argued over taxis. Children laughed on their way to school. No monsters. No fire. No apocalypse. His breathing became uneven. "This..." "This can't be real." He grabbed his phone from the bedside table. The screen lit up. April 3, 2045. His pupils shrank. Exactly one hundred days before the apocalypse. His heartbeat thundered inside his chest. "I..." "I came back?" Before he could think further— Ding! A clear mechanical sound echoed inside his mind. A blue holographic screen slowly appeared before his eyes. [Survival System Activated.] Welcome back, Last Survivor. Host confirmed: Arjun Mehta. Remaining Time Until Apocalypse: 100 Days. First Main Mission Released. Survive. Arjun stared silently at the glowing screen. His hands trembled. Not because he was afraid. But because... This time... He finally had a chance to change everything. End of Chapter 1Expand
