Beep... Beep...

The sound of the monitor echoed softly in the sterile white room. My eyelids fluttered open, squinting against the harsh fluorescent light. My head throbbed. I could taste dried blood in my mouth. Slowly, my vision adjusted-and that was when I saw her.

"Mom?" I rasped.

Eva stood by the window, arms crossed over her chest, her nurse uniform as crisp as ever. Her face was unreadable, and something about the way she looked at me made the room grow colder.

For a split second, I thought she was just worried about her only son. But then she turned to me fully, eyes sharp, voice clipped.

"Pontius... what have you gotten yourself into?"

I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through my ribs. "Jeremiah... He-"

"I know," she interrupted. "And that's not the worst of it."

I blinked. "What do you mean?"

She moved closer, her shoes clicking softly against the tiled floor. "This hospital... it's owned by Jeremiah's father. He found out what happened. And guess what? You're not the only one paying the price. I've been sacked."

"What?!" I sat up fully, ignoring the pain. "No. That can't-"

"Yes, Pontius. Effective immediately. Jeremiah told his father everything. And I mean everything."

My heart dropped. My mouth went dry. "Everything?"

"How you've been flaunting money, how you've been acting above your means. Tell me, where have you been getting all that money, Pontius?"

I froze.

She stepped closer, anger creeping into her voice. "The car. The clothes. The house you claimed was a gift from a friend? I want the truth. Right now."

I couldn't look at her. But this was my mother. If I had to face anyone, it was her.

"It's... it's not what you think," I said quietly. "I've been getting help. From a system. It-it's like a game. It gives me tasks. I complete them and get rewards. Money. Influence. I don't know where it comes from, I just-"

"Are you listening to yourself?" she snapped. "You expect me to believe some... magical game system has been paying your bills? Are you on drugs, Pontius? Is this what it's come to?"

"I'm not lying, Mom!" I said desperately.

But I could see it. The look in her eyes -disappointment. Deep, bitter disappointment.

"Where's your phone? Show me this so -called system."

I patted my pocket. It wasn't there. I checked the table beside me. Empty.

"Jeremiah," I muttered. "He must've taken it."

Eva shook her head, her shoulders falling. "You're making this worse. Jeremiah has filed a lawsuit against both of us for assault and damages.

And his father has ensured we're charged unless we settle."

My blood turned cold. "How much?"

"Twenty thousand dollars. Or we both face court."

I sat there, silent, unable to speak.

She sighed. "I sold the house."

My head snapped up. "What?! You-"

"We had no choice. I used the money to pay the lawsuit and open a small pharmacy. It's all we have now. You need to grow up, Pontius. This fantasy of yours-whatever this 'system' is-needs to end."

Her voice cracked as she turned away. I've done all I can. The rest is up to you.”

She said coldly before leaving my bed side. The door shut click gently with my face down with disappointment.

Maybe I have been deceiving myself?

Maybe the system was just something I had imagined out of the blue?

The next few days were worse than any nightmare I'd lived.

Rumors exploded across campus.

"Did you hear Pontius was sued?"

"Apparently, he was spending his mom's money just to impress Cassie."

"I heard he's broke now.”

I walked through the hallways like a ghost. The stares burned through me. The whispers cut deeper than any blade. And Cassie... she said nothing.

Not a word.

She just stared from a distance, waiting -maybe for an explanation. But I had none to give.

The system had gone silent. No new tasks. No messages. Just radio silence. Like it never existed.

Jeremiah made sure I paid. He and Layla, along with their group of loyal bullies, turned me into their errand boy. Cleaning their sneakers. Carrying their books. Running to the cafeteria for snacks. They made sure I never forgot where I stood.

"Hey, Pontius! Mop the gym floor again. I saw a speck of dirt," Layla sneered.

I gritted my teeth, my pride crushed. But I obeyed.

There was nothing else I could do.

Until the night before prom.

Dennis, one of Jeremiah's thugs, pushed me against the locker.

"Still think you can crawl back to the top, pauper?" he spat, then landed a heavy punch right on my cheek.

I stumbled back, pain erupting through my jaw.

And then it happened.

The air shimmered. Time seemed to freeze. A faint hum filled the air.

DING!

A glowing blue holographic message appeared right in front of me, hovering mid-air.

[SYSTEM REBOOTING...]

[USER STATUS: CRITICAL -INITIATING REDEMPTION QUEST]

[NEW QUEST UNLOCKED: "RECLAIM THE THRONE"]

[ACCEPT QUEST? YES / NO]

I stared at it, heart pounding, blood dripping from my lip.

For some time I don't know if this was real or I was hallucinating. I looked back trying to see if there was someone else beside me.

"Can you see that?" I ask one of the student who gave me a cold icy look.

"See what, Idiot?"

I rubbed my two eyes to see if I was dreaming one more.

Rossa’s words stayed in my head long after the call ended. You did well.Did I?I dropped the phone on the table and ran my hand through my hair. My chest felt tight. Hearing her say Zack killed my real father changed everything. If that was true, then my whole life had been built on a lie.“When do you want to meet her?” Rossa asked calmly.“Tonight,” I replied without thinking. His eyebrows shot up. “That fast?”“Yes. If Zack already knows I’m moving against him, then waiting will only give him more time.”Rossa nodded slowly. “Where?”I thought for a moment. It had to be a place open enough so we could see danger coming. But not too crowded.“The old warehouse near the river,” I finally said. “No one uses it anymore. You can position yourself around without her noticing.”Rossa gave a small smile. “Now you are thinking like a leader.”I didn’t feel like one.I felt like a son who needed to give her mother the attention she needed. By evening, the sky was dark and heavy with clouds

" Who is that?" Rossa asked immediately I dropped the call. " My mother." I said staring at the metallic object in my hand. Rossa squeezed his face. " And what does she want?" The air felt tense the moment he asked. " She wants to see me. That was all she said." I replied absent mindedly. " Just that?" Rossa's face changed colour. " How am I supposed to know? We haven't talked in a lot while. she called me now and said it was of great importance." " You can always turn her down, Jason. You have been doing fine all this while." Rossa replied I sigh. He was right. I had managed to do things on my own ever since she told me Zack was my father. I was not sure why she said it or if what she said was true. I knew Zack was not my father. He can never be. " She is my mother, Rossa. I know that we have our difference but I can't just turn her down." I said with my brows squeezed. " You are right but what if this was a trap? She married Zack, Jason. Don't you forg

I, Alex and Rossa sat round a big table. Each of us were busy trying to sort out one or two things. "Wow!" Alex said out loud. His eyes slowly darting towards me. " I can't believe you allowed him grow this strong." he said resting bhs back against the chair he sat on My eyesbrows furrowed a bit as I looked at him. " Do you think this is easy for me?" The room went quiet the moment I said those words. " Do you think I wanted a life were I had to be a hero and safe the day? Do you know how long I had to live in the dark trying to find out who I really want?" Alex shrugged. " It is quite simple, is not? You had what you had in you. Do you know how many would die to have what you had? A system that gives you immense power and also grant you a lot of money." Rossa laughed. " What would you have done with a power like that?" he asked " Are you seriously asking me thay? Look at this map, Rossa. Zack has all the positions. Talk about money, men in high places and even soldiers. He

Martha was a bit thrown back. The look on her face showed that she was scared. She had stabbed the man standing right in front of him and he had managed to come back from the land of the dead. " And what happens to him if he gives you the core?" she asked with a shaky breath. Zack stood up slowly from Martha's side. A soft smile displayed on his lips. " Are you saying that you are going to do this for me?" he asked, his hands slowly running through his hairs. Martha gulped down the saliva at the back of her throat. She knew Zack had shown his last card. Saying no to his was like she as signing her right to life. She needed to hold onto something. She needs to let him know that she was on his side. The room went quiet. Her gaze slowly fixed on Zack. " If I managed to convince him adhe give you what you want, do we become a family?" Zack rushed forward, his hands cupping Martha's fragile's face. "Yes. Yes!" he said laughing. " We are going to become one big

Martha did not feel herself hit the ground. Darkness swallowed her whole, thick and absolute, like the silence that had followed Zack’s final breath. She woke to the sound of steady beeping. Not the kind that came from a hospital monitor. Her eyelids felt heavy, as if glued shut. When she finally forced them open, the world above her blurred into white and gold. A chandelier. Not hers. His. Her heart slammed violently against her ribs. She was still in the house. The air smelled faintly of antiseptic and polished marble. She tried to sit up but something tugged at her wrists. Straps. Leather. Panic ignited instantly. She jerked against them, her breath turning sharp and ragged. “No… no, no, no—” “Easy.” The voice sliced through her like ice. She froze. Slowly, painfully, she turned her head. Zack stood by the window. Alive. Dressed in a fresh black shirt, sleeves rolled to his forearms, his posture relaxed as if they were discussing dinner plans. Not murder. Her

Martha’s fingers trembled as they wrapped around the knife. It was heavier than she expected. She had never imagined this was going to come on a platter of gold. For years she had imagined this moment in a thousand different ways. Sometimes she stabbed him in his sleep.Sometimes she poisoned his wine. Sometimes she simply walked away and left him to rot in his own empire of silence. But never like this.Never with him standing in front of her.Inviting it.Zack watched her with unsettling calm.No fear.No attempt to move.Only that infuriating, knowing look in his eyes.“You hesitate,” he said softly. " I thought you never cared? All this years of living under my roof, I had thought you are going to welcome the thought of sending me to the afterlife and now this?" he said laughing. “You think this is a game?” she whispered.“No,” he replied. “I think this is the only honest moment we’ve ever had.
