Chapter 1: Betrayal

The air inside the Abyssal Core carried the sharp scent of ozone and ash, with the faint metallic tang of blood.

Flickering lights from dying runes cast long, dancing shadows across the cracked obsidian floor. In the center of the cavern lay the massive, steaming corpse of the World-Ender Titan—the final boss that had threatened humanity for an agonizing decade.

Lucian Vance leaned heavily against his broken spear, his breath rattling in his chest. His body ached with deep bruises and cuts, but his heart felt lighter than it had in years. they had won. the ten-year nightmare of the apocalypse was finally over.

"Lucian."

A soft, melodic voice broke the heavy silence.

He looked up, wiping a mixture of sweat and grime from his eyes. Seraphina walked toward him, her white mage robes glowing softly in the dim light. She looked breathtakingly beautiful, an oasis of purity in the middle of a war zone. Her golden hair fell gently over her shoulders, and her crystal-blue eyes held the exact warmth that had kept him fighting through the darkest, coldest days of his life.

The blinding pain in Lucian's muscles seemed to fade into nothingness the moment he looked at her, she was the only reason he had pushed himself past human limits. In this cruel world ruled by the System, where humanity had lost everything, she had been his solitary light.

He thought back to last night. Before stepping into this final, suicidal battle, he had spent almost all his remaining high-grade resources to forge a single item: a delicate ring made of starlight steel, pulsing with an eternal, protective warmth. It was resting quietly in his coat pocket right now.

He had planned to drop to one knee the moment they returned to the surface. He wanted to leave the blood and the fighting behind, to wrap her in luxury, and to finally build the peaceful life they had whispered about in the trenches.

"You came," Lucian said, a tired but profoundly tender smile breaking through the dirt on his face. His voice was thick with emotion. "We really did it, Seraphina. The apocalypse is over. We can finally go home."

She stopped just a few feet in front of him. Garrett, Lucian’s vice-guild master and closest friend, stepped up to stand right beside her. Behind them, the elite members of the Pantheon Guild waited in a silent, rigid formation. These were the people Lucian had bled for, led, and protected for years.

"We did it together," Lucian continued, his eyes fixed entirely on Seraphina, completely vulnerable. "You kept me sane all these years, Sera. Every single time I wanted to lie down in the dirt and give up, I thought of you, of the future we would have. I love you. I’ve loved you for so long."

He reached into his pocket, his calloused fingertips lightly touching the hidden starlight ring. His heart beat frantically against his ribs. "When we get back to the surface... I have something important to ask you."

Seraphina smiled. For a fleeting second, it looked like the gentle, loving smile he had cherished for a decade.

Then, everything changed.

A sudden, sharp agony pierced straight through Lucian’s chest. He gasped, his lungs locking up as a blade of pure, compressed holy light erupted out of his breastplate. the white light illuminated the dark cavern, reflecting off the pooling blood at his feet.

Garrett’s hand held the hilt of the weapon from behind.

"You’re right, Lucian," Garrett whispered coldly into his ear, twisting the light blade with a slow, brutal deliberation that tore his internal organs to shreds. "It is over. For you."

Lucian’s eyes widened in absolute shock.  thick blood filled his mouth, choking him. He staggered backward as Garrett yanked the blade free, his legendary dragon-bone spear clattering uselessly against the stone floor. The physical pain was terrible, but the sudden betrayal in his chest hurt a thousand times more.

He turned his frantic, pleading gaze to Seraphina, his voice weak and desperate. He still didn't understand.

"Seraphina… run," Lucian choked out, desperately trying to raise a trembling, bloody arm to shield her. Even as he was dying, his first instinct was to protect her from Garrett. "Garrett… he’s a traitor… get back…"

But Seraphina did not run. She did not scream.

Instead, she stepped right past his collapsing body without a second glance. She walked straight to the Titan’s cooling remains and picked up a glowing crystal orb pulsing with infinite golden energy—the Sovereign’s Heart, the most powerful artifact in the world.

Lucian fell heavily to one knee, his strength rapidly draining away. Blood pooled around him, staining the floor. "Why…?" he whispered, his heart shattering into pieces.

Seraphina turned back to face him. Her beautiful face was completely cold now, her eyes utterly empty of any love or warmth.

"Did you really think a woman like me could ever love you, Lucian?" Seraphina asked, her voice smooth as velvet and twice as sharp. She looked down at his blood-soaked form with an expression of profound disgust. "Look at yourself. You were always covered in blood, always thinking about the next fight, always talking about a 'simple, peaceful life.' How pathetic. I am a queen, Lucian. I crave luxury, status, and power—things a crude war-hound like you could never provide."

She walked back over to Garrett. Naturally, without a hint of hesitation, Garrett pulled her close by her waist. Seraphina leaned into him seamlessly, placing her head on his shoulder, looking up at Garrett with the same adoring eyes she had used to manipulate Lucian for ten years.

The sight tore out whatever was left of Lucian's soul.

"The Pantheon Guild belongs to us now," Garrett said with a triumphant smirk. "People only see you when they look at our achievements. As long as the great Spear Sovereign lives, we are all just shadows in your kingdom. But with this artifact, we don't need a battlefield hero anymore. We will rule the high society of the new world together."

Lucian coughed up more blood, his vision beginning to blur. His voice cracked with despair. "I gave you everything... My trust. My strength. My heart... I thought we were family..."

Seraphina looked down at him with a flicker of condescending pity. "That was your ultimate mistake, Lucian. In this world, mercy is weakness and foolish; blind love is a disease. You were too soft. Too focused on silly dreams of peace. Goodbye."

With a brutal, heavy kick to his punctured chest, Garrett sent Lucian flying backward.

Lucian’s body tipped over the edge of the elevated boss platform. As he fell into the swirling, chaotic darkness of the collapsing dungeon core, the tearing forces of the void began to pull violently at his body and soul.

Falling through the freezing, endless chaos, the sorrow in Lucian's soul instantly evaporated, leaving behind a burning wave of pure hatred. The faces of Garrett and Seraphina stayed burned into his mind. He remembered every sacrifice he had made for a guild that had abandoned him, and every moment he had stupidly believed in Seraphina’s fake affection.

If I get another chance... Lucian thought, his consciousness rapidly fading as darkness closed in. I will never be a hero again. I will build my own empire, and I will be their worst nightmare. I will surround myself with people who truly stand by me—women who choose me with their hearts, not just their empty words. I will make them love me. I will protect them, give them power and safety, and they will never, ever dare to betray me.

His heart gave one final, agonizing thud. His eyes closed. Death claimed the Sovereign.
