CHAPTER 14:

The golden light of the late afternoon sun vanished in an instant, swallowed whole by an eerie, unnatural darkening of the sky. It was not a storm, nor was it the arrival of night. The very atmosphere over Sector 4 seemed to twist and bruise, shifting into a deep, blood-red crimson that cast a sickly, violent glare down through the massive glass skylights of the Grand Plaza Mall.

PING!

A sharp, deafening chime—like a massive brass church bell striking inside a hollow chamber—echoed simultaneously within the minds of every living human on Earth. The sheer psychic pressure was so intense that the survivors working on the ground-floor barricades dropped their tools, clutching their heads in agony as a massive, pulsing crimson interface window seared itself across their vision.

[GLOBAL SYSTEM EMERGENCY NOTICE]

Status: 7-Day Newbie Protection Period Expiring

Countdown: 47 Hours, 59 Minutes Remaining

System Event Triggered: The First Awakening Wave — Monster Tide

Event Description: In exactly 48 hours, all regional spatial rifts within Sector 4 will permanently expand. A combined horde exceeding 10,000 Baron-Class and common-tier monsters will execute a coordinated assault upon the sector.

Targeting Priority: The Monster Tide is drawn toward areas displaying the highest density of human life and the concentrated nexus of System energy.

[CRITICAL WARNING TO USER: MARK SHOLA]

Your fortress, 'Grand Plaza Mall,' currently holds the #1 energy rating in Sector 4.

The primary vanguard of the Monster Tide will target your location with 100% certainty.

Recommendation: Prepare structural defenses or abandon the sector immediately.

The silence that followed inside the cavernous mall was absolute. For three agonizing seconds, no one breathed. Then, pure, unadulterated panic erupted like a bomb.

"Ten thousand monsters?!" a young survivor screamed, letting a heavy wooden support beam slam onto the concrete floor. "Ten thousand?! We’re dead! We need to run right now! The mall is just a giant target!"

"The System said they’re coming straight here because of him!" a woman shrieked, her trembling, dust-caked finger pointing directly toward the central atrium fountain. "His level is going to get us all slaughtered! If we stay here, we’ll be torn to pieces! We have to run to the military safe zone downtown!"

Feet shuffled frantically across the marble tiles. Shouted arguments broke out near the northern exit, and the carefully organized stacks of supplies were knocked over as terrified shoppers began grabbing whatever canned goods they could carry.

From the basement service elevator, Mr. Shola burst into the promenade. His rumpled suit was soaked with sweat, his breath coming in ragged, wheezing gasps as he sprinted straight toward Mark, who stood motionless by the broken dolphin fountain.

"L-Lord Mark!" Shola whimpered, his hands trembling violently. "Did you see it?! The screen! Ten thousand monsters! And they’re coming right for us! The workers are already packing their bags—they're going to slip out through the loading bays! They're abandoning the fortress!"

Mark Shola didn't move. His hands remained casually tucked inside his jacket pockets, his dark hair rustling gently from a cool, sulfurous draft circulating through the shattered roof rafters. He didn't look angry. He didn't look panicked. He slowly raised his right index finger, swiping the floating crimson warning window out of his field of vision. His face remained as cold, smooth, and unreadable as polished marble.

Through [Shared Senses], he extended his awareness far beyond the glass walls of the mall. Out in the crumbling city streets, the distant, chaotic howls of stray beasts were already changing. Their tone was shifting—becoming deeper, rhythmic, and chillingly organized. The ambient mana density in the air was spiking, rapidly recharging his internal mana pool at twice its baseline recovery speed.

To ordinary humans, this system notice was a death sentence written in sky-fire. But to an SSS-Rank Monster Breeder, an army of ten thousand beasts was not a threat. It was the largest concentrated haul of evolution materials, rare cores, and high-grade monster crystals on the planet.

"Let them leave," Mark said. His voice was neither loud nor rushed, yet it cut through the deafening noise of the panicked crowd like a steel blade through paper.

Mr. Shola froze mid-breath, his mouth hanging open. "W-What? But Lord Mark... we need the labor! If they all run, who will haul the concrete? Who will reinforce the iron gates?"

"I said, let them leave," Mark repeated, his gaze shifting toward the gathering crowd of panicked survivors near the perimeter doors. "Those who run today are cowards driven purely by impulse. If they stay out of fear, they will freeze during the siege, break our chokepoints, and block my beasts' lines of fire. I have no use for dead weight in my fortress."

Mark stepped upward, mounting the wide concrete rim of the dried fountain basin so that every human in the central atrium could see him clearly.

Beside his boots, Shadow stepped forward. The midnight-black Hellhound let out a low, vibrating growl that shook the glass displays fifty feet away. His plasma-infused wings flared slightly, releasing a sudden wave of dry, scorching heat across the room that forced the nearest survivors to stumble backward in terror. Overhead, Zephyr circled in tight, silent arcs, his metallic silver wings catching the blood-red light of the sky.

"Listen to me carefully," Mark announced, his voice smooth, cold, and carrying absolute authority across the silent square. "The loading gates are unlocked. Anyone who genuinely believes a military safe zone that hasn't fired a single artillery shell in three days can protect them from ten thousand monsters is free to walk out those doors right now. I will not raise a hand to stop you."

He paused, letting his icy gaze sweep over the crowd.

"But mark my words," he continued softly. "The moment your foot crosses my perimeter line, you cease to be a resident of this fortress. If you run out into those streets and realize the city is nothing but an open-air meat grinder, do not come crawling back to my iron gates. Because when my beasts open their jaws next... it won't be to offer you shelter."

The heavy silence returned to the Grand Plaza Mall, heavier and colder than before.

The harsh, undeniable weight of Mark’s words crashed over the crowd. Outside, the sky was blood-red. The city was burning. The military hadn't sent a single rescue helicopter or radio frequency update to Sector 4 since the sky first shattered. If they walked out now, they would be sleeping in dark, ruined alleys while thousands of hungry, evolving monsters hunted them through the night.

Slowly, painfully, a young man near the front dropped his overstuffed duffel bag onto the tile floor with a heavy thud.

A woman sobbed quietly, stepping backward out of the exit corridor and returning to her assigned work station near the sandbag line. One by one, forty-five of the fifty survivors lowered their heads, choosing the cold, terrifying certainty of Mark’s strength over the chaotic meat grinder outside.

Only five survivors—four men and one woman—refused to yield to the fear. Grasping their stolen cans of food, they sprinted out through the shattered glass doors of the northern loading dock, disappearing into the crimson-tinted fog of the city highway.

Mark watched them go without a flicker of emotion. Less than two minutes later, a series of short, wet, agonizing screams echoed from three blocks away, followed by the sound of tearing bone and the guttural snarls of hunting packs. Then, silence returned.

The forty-five remaining survivors flinched, but none of them moved. Their choice was locked in.

Mark jumped down from the fountain basin, his attention already pivoting away from the humans and toward the true cornerstone of his defensive strategy.

"Mr. Shola," Mark called out.

The manager rushed forward, dropping to one knee with frantic submission. "Lord Mark! I am here!"

"Lock the basement access bays and distribute double rations to those who remained," Mark ordered, walking toward the rear of the atrium where Terra, his newly synthesized [Gravel Golem], stood waiting like a massive granite monument. "The cowards are gone. Now, it is time to upgrade my primary squad. I need my beasts at maximum combat tier before the tide hits these walls."

Mark opened his primary system interface, bringing up his active squad matrix.

[DIVINE BEAST SYNTHESIS — SQUAD STATUS]

Shadow (Hellhound): Level 6 — Combat Power: 380

Sly (Iron Viper): Level 5 — Combat Power: 310

Zephyr (Storm Eagle): Level 5 — Combat Power: 295

Terra (Gravel Golem): Level 1 — Combat Power: 140

To hold against a ten-thousand-monster tide, Terra’s baseline stats were a dangerous bottleneck. A frontline tank needed to be completely immovable before the first spatial rift ruptured.

Mark extended his right hand, accessing his spatial ring. Floating into the air before him were five glowing, green-tinted [Arachnid Cores], the remaining fragments of the Grade-C Earth Core, and a crystal vial containing concentrated [Abyssal Venom Toxin] harvested from Shadow's claws.

"System," Mark commanded mentally, his eyes flashing with golden energy. "Feed the raw monster cores directly into Terra's core matrix. Execute rapid stat leveling."

[CONSUMING 5x ARACHNID CORES & EARTH CORE FRAGMENTS...]

Target: Terra (Gravel Golem)

Experience Absorbed: +3,800 XP

Level Upgrade: Level 1 ➔ Level 6 (MAX TIER 1)

Combat Power: 140 ➔ 360

Skill Unlocked: [Earth Wall — Fortress Grade] — Allows Terra to merge directly with surrounding concrete and steel infrastructure, expanding its physical defensive mass by 400%.

BOOM!

The floorboards beneath the atrium groaned violently as Terra absorbed the raw energy. The glowing golden veins running across its basalt armor flared like molten steel. The golem’s body expanded rapidly, surging from five feet to an imposing ten feet in height. Its shoulders broadened into massive, interlocking stone plates, transforming it into a living siege engine of rock and steel.

THUD!

Terra slammed both massive stone fists against the marble floor. Instantly, the cracked concrete foundation beneath the fountain melted, rising like liquid clay to fuse directly around the golem’s lower legs, anchoring it seamlessly into the very bedrock of the Grand Plaza Mall.

Mark felt the mental feedback loop snap into place. Through [Shared Senses], he didn't just command Terra—he could feel every structural pillar, steel support girder, and concrete wall of the four-story commercial complex resting under his direct tactile control.

"Mr. Shola," Mark said, his voice echoing across the silent plaza as Shadow, Sly, and Zephyr took their defensive positions in a tight formation around Terra.

"My Lord!" Shola responded from the perimeter line.

"Move all non-perishable food and medical supplies up to the second-floor vault," Mark commanded, turning his back on the entrance as the red sky outside grew darker. "For the next forty-seven hours, no one sleeps. We aren't just preparing to defend this mall... we're building a slaughterhouse."
