CHAPTER 25:

The heavy, squelching sound of steel-toed combat boots splashing through shallow water echoed down the flooded subway tunnel.

Mark stood perfectly still at the edge of the sunken train platform, his hands tucked deeply into his jacket pockets. Behind him, the dark water of the reservoir pool was completely smooth, like a sheet of black glass. There was no sign of Kraken, his newly bound Abyssal Leviathan, nor was there any trace of Sly or Shadow. His beasts had entirely dissolved into the surrounding darkness and water using their active stealth abilities.

To anyone walking into the chamber, Mark looked like a lone, exhausted teenager trapped in the dark underbelly of the city.

"Hold it right there! Hands where I can see them!"

A harsh, authoritative voice barked from the entrance archway. A tactical flashlight beam sliced through the thick, sulfurous air, blindingly illuminating Mark’s face.

Seven human hunters marched onto the platform, their heavy ballistic plate armor bearing the prominent silver crest of the Global Salvation Alliance. Unlike Gideon's rogue crew, these men carried standard-issue military automatic rifles, tactical shields, and glowing elemental blades. Leading them was a tall, scar-faced man in his late thirties wearing a dark blue commander’s coat.

[TARGET IDENTIFIED]

Name: Captain Harris Vance

Class: Steel Vanguard

Level: 4

Combat Power: 165

Faction: Global Salvation Alliance (Elite Scouting Unit)

Harris Vance scanned the ruined, empty reservoir room, his eyes lingering on the shattered fragments of the giant white pearl floating on the water's surface. A look of intense, greedy realization flashed across his face.

"The system alert said a Calamity Class Seed spawned right in this grid," Captain Harris sneered, stepping closer until he was less than ten yards away from Mark. He lowered his rifle slightly, but his men kept their weapons locked onto Mark's chest. "You're Mark Shola, the lucky brat from the leaderboard, aren't you? Where is the boss drop? Under military martial law code 4, all high-tier resource items in Sector 4 are the property of the Alliance Faction. Hand over your spatial ring immediately."

Gideon Cross stepped forward from the shadows, his carbon-fiber tactical crossbow raised, his knuckles white with rage.

"Vance, you arrogant military dog!" Gideon snapped. "You didn't do a single thing to clear this sector! Lord Mark systematically wiped out the entire monster tide while your alliance was hiding in your downtown bunkers! You have no right to touch a single drop down here!"

"Lord Mark?" Captain Harris let out a loud, mocking laugh, his men chuckling along behind him. He pointed his automatic rifle directly at Mark’s forehead. "Gideon, you're a disgraced rank 2 joke for bowing to a nineteen-year-old kid. Shola, I don't care how many low-level goblins your wolf killed at the mall. Down here in this narrow tunnel, a summoner without space to move is nothing but a meat target. If my men pull these triggers, you’ll be Swiss cheese before your pets can even manifest."

Mark slowly tilted his head, his golden eyes flashing with cold, terrifying amusement in the dark. He didn't raise his hands. He didn't look at the seven rifles aimed at his heart.

"Harris Vance," Mark said, his voice dropping into a flat, sub-zero whisper that caused the surrounding water to ripple. "You share a last name with the Rank 3 leaderboard power, Rebecca Vance. Is she the one who gave you the courage to stand in front of me and demand my property?"

"Shut your mouth and take off the ring!" Captain Harris roared, his finger tightening aggressively against the trigger. "Last warning, brat! Kneel and hand it over, or we paint these walls with your blood!"

"You think this water is empty because you can't see the teeth," Mark murmured softly. He raised his right index finger from his pocket, pointing it directly at the pool beneath Harris's boots. "Kraken. Feed."

BOOM!

The stagnant, freezing water beneath the Alliance squad didn't just splash—it violently erupted upward like a geyser.

Before Harris could even register the movement, an eight-foot-long sapphire serpent exploded out of the dark pool. Kraken utilized [Void Submersion] to launch a flawless, invisible ambush. The ribbon-like fins of the Abyssal Leviathan sliced through the air like twin razor blades, executing [Abyssal Torrent]. A high-pressure jet of freezing, gravitational water slammed directly into the three front-line soldiers.

SKRRRCH!

The concentrated water pressure didn't just push them; it cleanly cut through their high-grade ballistic plate armor like a hot knife through butter, severing their weapons and shattering their ribs instantly. The three men shrieked in agony as they were thrown backward into the dark walls, collapsing into the water as bloody, lifeless shapes.

"What the hell is that monster?!" Captain Harris shrieked, his face turning completely pale as he rapidly backed away, wildly firing his automatic rifle into the dark spray. But the bullets simply zipped through the water, failing to leave a single scratch on Kraken’s translucent sapphire scales.

Hiss!

From the darkness of the ceiling panels directly above the remaining survivors, Sly’s massive eighteen-foot iron body dropped down like a fallen concrete pillar. The Abyssal Viper wrapped his thick, matte-black coils around two more soldiers, executing [Corrosive Constriction]. The sickening sound of breaking armor and fracturing bones echoed through the cavernous room, accompanied by a wet hiss as the snake’s acidic scales melted their tactical gear into black sludge.

Within exactly fifteen seconds, out of the seven elite alliance hunters, only Captain Harris remained standing. His weapon was gone, his hands were covered in green acid foam, and his knees were shaking so violently he fell flat onto his back in the freezing swamp water.

Shadow emerged from the darkness right in front of his face, his bear-sized frame radiating a terrifying [Searing Aura] of black fire that turned the water around Harris's legs into a boiling steam bath.

Mark walked casually down the steps of the train platform, his boots clicking smoothly against the wet concrete as he stopped right over the trembling commander. He reached down, grabbed Harris by the collar of his dark blue coat, and lifted him up until their eyes met.

"Go back to your downtown bunker, Captain," Mark said, his voice entirely calm, yet carrying the crushing weight of a death sentence. He slipped a small, black tracking device into Harris's coat pocket—an item he had harvested from the private security vault earlier. "Tell Rebecca Vance that her scouting unit made a terrible mistake. The Grand Plaza Mall is my domain. If she wants to fight for Sector 4, tell her to bring her entire army to my gates. Because the next time I see a Vance banner... I will erase her entire bloodline from the leaderboard."

Mark violently shoved the captain back into the shallow water, turning his back as Shadow let out a low, blood-chilling roar that chased the weeping man out of the subway tunnels.

Mark opened his interface tab, a dark, calculating look settling on his face as he watched the little black tracking dot begin to move rapidly toward the city center on his map. He hadn't let Harris live out of mercy. He let him live to serve as a beacon to lead his mythical army straight to the Alliance’s main headquarters.

PING!

Suddenly, a massive, red emergency system window forced its way onto Mark’s screen, accompanied by a deafening siren that echoed directly inside his head.
